Single Malt Scotch Whisky
Single malt scotch is produced by a single distillery. There are around 100 distilleries in Scotland that make single malt whiskey and each has its own distinct flavor characteristics and notes. Single malts tend to have more flavor than blended scotch and are used to create those blends.
After distilling the malted barley twice in pot stills, a 140 proof spirit called “plain British spirit” is pumped into oak casks and is aged for at least three years. A number of single malts can be aged for 20 or 30 years.
It’s customary to enjoy single malts on their own or on the rocks, though some cocktails do call for a single malt scotch. Some of the brands to look for include The Glenlivet, Glen Scotia, Laphroaig, and The Macallan. Within this category are some of the most expensive whiskeys in the world, though each brand typically offers labels that are affordable as well.

Single Malt Vs Blended
Blended Scotch whisky is different from single malt because its a combination of single malt and grain whiskies. Grain whisky is simply whisky made from other grains besides barley, like corn or wheat. The purpose of making blended scotch is to create a more consistent product with a controlled flavor profile. Master blenders use a variety of single malts and/or grain malts to create the perfect ratio.
Because blended whiskies are often made with cheaper grains that dont require the same maturation time as malted barley, they can be produced more quickly for less money. This adds to the perception that blended whisky is inferior to single malts, but its not true in all cases. Today, there are blended whiskies that have been carefully produced with very high standards.
The History Of Scotch Whisky
The first written mention of Scotch was found scribed on June 1st, 1495 in Volume X on page 487 of the Exchequer Rolls of Scotland where it reads To Friar John Cor, by order of the King, to make aqua vitae VIII bolls of malt. The Exchequer Rolls were records of all royal income and expenses. In this particular entry, it documents that Cor was given eight bolls of malt to make aqua vitae throughout the months of 1494. What this shows is that despite being the earliest written reference, distillation was well underway come the fifteenth century. If we only take into account the eight bolls given to Cor in 1494, we can estimate that 1500 bottles of whisky were produced that year.
Evolving from a Scottish drink called uisge beatha , whisky began to circulate throughout the country, causing policymakers to begin taxing it come the year 1644. Unfortunately, despite the governments attempt to regulate and draw income from such a popular drink, distillers began to sell it illegally and sales flourished across Scotland. By 1780 there were eight legal distilleries in all of Scotland competing against more than four hundred bootleg operations. By 1823 Parliament realized that in order for the legal producers to be able to compete with the pirates, they would have to ease restrictions and this decision is what gave birth to the famous excise act.

On occasion, the product of a single cask of whisky is bottled without being vatted with other casks, and released as a “Single Cask” offering. However, it is not always clear what the term “single cask” refers to. At least some producers release vattings of multiple barrels that have been matured together for one final period in a larger single cask as “single cask” whisky.
While cask strength, or undiluted, whisky has recently become popular, the vast majority of whisky is diluted to its “bottling strength” – between 40% and 46% ABV – and bottled for sale.

American Blended And Straight Whiskey: Smooth And Mixable

A blended whiskey must contain at least 20 percent straight whiskey. Premium brands may include as many as 75 different straight whiskeys and grain neutral spirits. This art of blending produces a balanced, rich, light-bodied whiskey, each with its own character.

Bottled In Bond Bourbon
The Bottled-in-Bond Act was signed in 1897 and represents one of the first federal government regulations to protect the standards of American whiskey. Today, its quite rare compared to straight whiskey and some producers may even regard the labelling term as outdated.
A bonded whiskey must have been aged for at least four years, but it also requires that all the spirit in the bottle must have been distilled in the same season by the same distiller in a single distillery. Its ageing process must then take place in a bonded warehouses where it may be supervised by the US government.
Bonded whiskey must then be bottled at a minimum of 50% rather than 40% ABV. Given that it is essentially a single-vintage whiskey, it offers little in the way of blending spirits to create a unique beverage.
Conversely, it could instead be argued that it results in a whiskey thats more representative of the distillers identity. Indeed, it can also be regarded as a stricter type of single-barrel bourbon.
Like straight whiskey, bottled in bond liquor is not an exclusive term for bourbon and can be used by other American creations.
