The combination of different distilleries obviously takes away that location consistency. And since blended scotches can even combine grains, you have an even wider range of options beyond malt!
Most blended whiskies are made to focus on a few flavor notes that combine well. Generally, they are smooth with many complex notes and full-flavor profiles.
The downside of a blend is some of the funkier notes in specific single malts get cut out in a blend in an effort to create a smooth, balanced bottle. But the flip side is by playing around with quantities, blenders can achieve really unique and complex flavor combinations!
Blended gets a bad reputation, since many younger versions tend to mix something good with lots of low quality whisky. But the older you go, the more likely you are to find really excellent bottles.

Glenfiddich predominantly matures their Whiskies casks made from American white oak that has previously been used to mature Bourbon Whiskey. Example For Bottling: Scottish Liqueure Center
The Scottish Liqueure Center is a small bottler near Perth. It is one of the bottlers, where the distilleries send their casks, in order to bottle them. The first step is the batting tank, where cask are being mixed in order to have the same taste and aroma in one bottling. The Whisky is then transferred through tubes to the bottling station where the machine is filling the Whisky into single bottles. Before the bottles are filled, they are washed out with the same Whisky, that gets filled into it.
After the bottles are filled they are brought to the corking machine. Here the machine is putting the corks in and tightens them. Is the bottle closed, the label is being put on. In the last step, the capsule is being put on, above the cork, to seal the bottle of Whisky. Then the bottles are placed on palettes and are ready for being shipped.
Also interesting is the storage of the casks, which are brought by the distilleries. Those are being checked for their mass of spirit. A rod is put into the cask via the bunghole. With that, two points are measured: The âheightâ of the spirit, and the height of the cask. With the difference between those two points, it can be said, how much spirit is in the cask. The scale on the rod is not linear, since the sides of the casks is round.

A Single Malt Scotch Whisky is made from only water, malted barley, and yeast in a traditional batch distillation process using copper pot stills. The term Single on the bottle does not refer to single cask whisky, single batch, or single year. It is simply a guarantee that all the whisky in that bottling has been distilled at one, single distillery.
Our unique six-part maturation process at the Isle of Raasay Distillery combines two types of Isle of Raasay malt spirit peated and unpeated in three distinct cask types: Rye whiskey, fresh Chinkapin oak, and Bordeaux red wine casks.

The Distillation In Pot Stills
The wash is filled into the first copper pot still, called wash still, and is heated from below and from the inside respectively. Today mainly hot steam is used for heating. Using an external gas flame has become rare. In the first case, hot steam is lead through specially shaped heating tubes inside the pot still, thereby heating the wash. At 78Â° C, the alcohol starts to evaporate before the water does. The alcohol steam rises in the tapered tube.
Over the neck and the lyne arm the steam is led into a condenser where the alcohol steam is liquefied again. The water mostly remains in the pot still. All Single MaltWhisky distilleries work with at least two series-connected pot stills. The first one, the wash still, distils the wash to 20% to 25% of alcohol. The resulting liquid is called âlow winesâ. The low wines are then transferred into the second pot still, called low wines still or spirit still, where they are distilled to an alcohol content of 65% to 70%. In the Scottish Lowlands, a lot of distilleries used to use a third still. This third pot still produced even purer alcohol at more than 75%. Today there are only a few distilleries left in the Lowlands , and only Auchentoshan still has three pot stills.
What Is Single Malt Whiskey
A common misconception is that a bottle of single malt whiskey has all come from the same barrel or batch, but this isnt the case. Most single malt whiskey will be a blend which to add to further confusion, isnt the same as a blended whiskey. A single malt will likely be a blend of whiskey from different casks and, possibly, different ages, but these are all from the same distillery. Thats because the single in single malt means that all of the whiskey in the bottle has been produced by the same distillery.
As for the malt, this refers to the grain used in the whiskey, and to be a single malt whiskey, the grain must be one type in Ireland, thats barley, which has been malted. We use 100% malted barley in our single malt whiskey, currently sourced from 11 growers in Wexford, but weve also recently planted our own barley on-site here in the Hazelwood Estate.

Vatted or Blended Malt is probably the closest approximation of what double malt is intended to mean, though we cant be sure. Many vatted malt scotch bottles only include two distilleries and these will be marked on the bottle.

The Category As The Commission Defines It Is:

Sounds a lot like single malt Scotch whisky, barring the country of origin, right? There are a few differences, though. The commission hasnt set a minimum aging duration. Bourbon doesnt have a minimum either, for that matter, so this fits with the guidelines of other American whiskeys. Similarly, maximum distillation proof is 80% ABV, also matching other American whiskey standards.
The proposed guidelines dont specify the type of distillation equipment which may be used, either. This makes sense given the abundance of hybrid pot stills in the U.S. and assorted other craft-sized distilling equipment. Another point not mentioned by the commission is the standard maximum barrel entry proof of 62.5% ABV for most American whiskey, which you can expect to be applied to any official category.
Of course, this is what the producers within the American Single Malt Whiskey Commission have advocated for. But that doesnt mean the TTB is going to follow those specs. After the TTB releases its initial ruling, a 60-day commenting period will allow for feedback from producers and other groups. Afterwards its back to the drawing board for potential revisions.
