As far as beer names go, few can hold a candle to the origin story of Great Lakes Edmund Fitzgerald. The Ohio brewery named the porter after the famous freighter, which mysteriously sank to the bottom of Lake Superior in 1975. It has inspired songs, poems, and a beer brewed with roasted barley. The beer has won over a dozen awards, including golds at the Great American Beer Festival and World Beer Championship.

Brand value of leading beer brands worldwide

Budweiser was the most valued beer brand worldwide in 2020, with a worth of 14.65 billion U.S. dollars. The brand was followed by Heineken in second and Stella Artois ranked third. Compared to all brands worldwide, Budweiser was ranked 32. The top brands in 2019 were all tech companies, with Apple the leader, valued at over 234 billion dollars.

Brand value

Brand value is a bit of a nebulous concept and different definitions exist. But, at its core brand value is about how much more people will pay for one brand over another and their likelihood of choosing that brand over another.

Brand image

One component of a brands value is its image. More or less the personality of the brand is what comes to consumers minds when they think of it. Budweiser has long been famous for its Super Bowl commercials. Their 2017 commercial, #BornTheHardWay garnered nearly half a million shares on social media. Prior to the Super Bowl, Budweisers commercial was the most anticipated by viewers. Source: statista.com

Beer Sales Take A Hit

On paper, the beer category accounts for 17 percent share of sales on Drizly. But that doesnt tell the whole story. When the hard seltzer category is removed from the equation, beer sales drop to just 13 percent of overall sales, down from 15 percent share in 2020.

The share decline in the core beer category share can be attributed to the growth in single-serve options in other categories including hard alternatives seltzer, tea, lemonade, kombucha, etc. and RTDs, says Liz Paquette, Drizlys head of consumer insights.

Recent data from Nielsen states that core beer sales over the Memorial Day week in 2021 grew just 1.9 percent from the holiday in 2019 . That growth is pretty minimal when you consider the fact that hard seltzers were up 297 percent compared to 2019 sales.

According to Adam Rogers, the North American research director at IWSR Drinks Market Analysis, the pandemic and taproom closures had a major impact on the category as well. Rapid levels of innovation from competing categories, primarily RTDs and spirits, have caused consumers to stray from the beer category, he says.

Many breweries were not able to maintain their pre-pandemic levels of new product launches, Rogers adds. With taproom closures and increase in more traditional retail sales during Covid, there was an effect on on-site consumption, since consumer feedback is a main driver for product testing prior to entering distribution.

Emergence Of Small Breweries

By the 1970s, consolidation and dominance by the country’s major brewers led to the fewest breweries in the country’s modern history. Despite this, the period also saw the beginnings of the country’s current craft beer movement. In 1976, optical engineer and homebrewerJack McAuliffe founded New Albion Brewing Company in Sonoma County, California, becoming the nation’s first microbrewery since Prohibition. Influenced by Fritz Maytag’s recent turnaround of the Anchor Brewing Company and an earlier military stationing in Scotland, McAuliffe’s brewery offered bottle-conditioned porter, stout, and pale ale to a public more accustomed to lightly flavored lagers. Despite only staying in business for seven years, New Albion ignited an interest in craft beer and set a precedent for a generation of craft brewers, including Ken Grossman and the owners of Mendocino Brewing Company, the nation’s first brewpub.

Bud Light Platinum Anheuser

Bud Light Platinum is a light beer with a real kick of alcohol. It’s the newest beer on the lighter side, having been introduced in 2012, and is a curious one in that it actually has a higher ABV than its real Bud counterpart, 6% ABV vs 5% ABV, and only 8 fewer calories.

How does it taste? This Serious Eats review says it’s better than Bud Light, having shed some of Bud Light’s “telltale weaknesses” with “a little bit more malt sweetness and a tiny hop kick at the end.” But for 8 more calories, you can have the real thing, so whether it’s worth it is up to you.

Pale Lager And Malt Liquor

While craft brewing companies with myriad style offerings continue to gain market share, the best-selling style of beer made in the U.S. is still pale lager, most often made by most large-scale brewers, including Anheuser-Busch InBev and MillerCoors. These large-scale brewers also produce other popular styles, often relatively light in body, flavor and calories. Light beer, which was introduced on a large scale by Miller Brewing Company in the early 1970s, is a beer made with reduced alcohol and carbohydrate content, and has grown to eclipse many of the original pale lager brands in sales. Bud Light, brewed by Anheuser-Busch InBev, is the top-selling beer in the United States. Ice beer is an example which has been partially freeze-distilled with the intention of concentrating flavor and alcohol. The technique is based on that used to make Eisbock, but the two styles share no stylistic similarities otherwise. Dry beer, a Japanese style based on pale lager, is also brewed by some American companies. In dry beer, the yeast is encouraged to consume more fermentables, resulting in a crisper finish and an unusually subtle hop flavor.

Malt liquor is a high-ABV pale lager. It has often incited controversy due to its alcohol content, larger-sized containers, low prices, and advertising that frequently targets inner city neighborhoods.

A Few Words About Lager Beer

Lager beer brands were developed in Munich by Carl von Linde in 1870. This beer brand is conditioned at low temperature. It appears in different colors that includes pale, golden amber and sometimes dark. The characteristics of being versatile beer sometimes make some beer to be categorized in amber beer brands. Pale lager is mostly drunk and readily available type of beer. They are bottom fermented and cold conditioned beer. It was the principal form of brewing in Bohemia in the year 1860 and 1870.

After the introduction of refrigeration, lager production has risen due to a good storage system and helps to keep cold until serving. In some countries, it always debits a large number of adjuncts which is always rice or maize. The use of increased adjuncts makes manufacturing expensive. Lager beer comes in different varieties which include Dunkel, Pilsner bock among others.

Anheuser-Busch InBev accounts for about half the world’s top brands, but some of the best sellers are beyond the reach of multinational brewers.

PORTLAND, Ore. Nations seldom play soccer in the same style during the World Cup, so why should they drink the same beer?

Even after the matches of the 2014 World Cup kicked off weeks ago, beer was still a big deal at this year’s event in Brazil. Anheuser-Busch InBev is based in Brazil, brews popular Brazilian beer brand Brahma and serves as an official World Cup sponsor. According to Euromonitor, it accounts for 20.6% of the world’s roughly $600 billion beer market and has enough influence with soccer governing body FIFA to get it to lean on Brazil and get it to repeal a ban on alcohol at soccer stadiums.

Yet even after Interbrew merged with Anheuser-Busch and bought out Mexican brewer Modelo last year, it doesn’t hold absolute dominance over the global beer market. SABMiller accounts for just 9.7%, but has 200 brands in 75 countries. Heineken International holds 9.2% thanks to not only its flagship brand and Amstel, but its Murphy’s brewery in Ireland, its Scottish & Newcastle brands in the United Kingdom, its Tiger brand in Malaysia and its FEMSA beers in Mexico and Brazil.

The lore surrounding Alchemists Heady Topper could fill a book. The main takeaways are that it is the beer that helped launch the IPA craze, especially when it comes to putting such a beer in a can instead of a bottle. This was in 2011, but today the beer still stands as the epitome of double IPA greatness, with its signature grapefruit and pine flavors that finish with a mouthful of hoppy bitterness.

Before Prohibition there were more than 4,000 breweries in the United Statesevery town, every neighborhood had its own brewery. The 18th Amendment kneecapped the brewing industry, and it wouldnt be until 2015 that the number of breweries in the country would surpass that 4,000 number again. The success and significance of brewing in American is not just measured in quantity. The early 2000s also brought a renaissance for the relatively young industry.

In terms of what sets brewers in the US apart, I think of two things: The adaptive and experimental nature of the brewers here. While the style guidelines are set, there are so many fantastic takes on a style or use of a newer or different brewing method to make beers stand apart, says Allo Gilinsky, e-commerce and events specialist at Craft Beer Cellar. Brewers also enjoy collaborating with each other, which only enhances how new techniques and style-bending beers come to light.

When exploring the American beer canon, its not surprising that most beer styles originated elsewhere. Beer is an old beverage that has been brewed to perfection by a young country, after all. The exception to that is the cream ale, a distinctly American style that began as a pre-Prohibition competitor to the German lager. Gennesee brought the style to the modern masses in the 1960s. Genny Cream Ale is a shift drink favorite, Powers says. Hailing from my hometown of Rochester, New York, this beer makes me think of stealing sips from my dad.

Color is mostly used to categorize different varieties of brands. Color always has nothing to do with alcohol content. For example, black Guinness has a concentration of 4.2% while Duvel has around 8% concentration and yet it is golden in color. The color only originates from the addition of small quantity of baked grains. The higher the baking, the stronger the color. To start with, Black beer brands also known as the dark beer. This beauty is a crisp pilsner with a bit of a twist. In true Allagash form, they weave a thread of their wild ale into the beer seamlessly. This gives the pilsner an Old World flavor that sends the drinker on a trip to lagering caves in Eastern Europe, Powers says.
