Copper
NOSE Caramel, oak, dried apricots, peanuts, spice and a touch of cocoa and copper like a bitter chocolate, but a bit more metallic.
PALATE Caramel, citrus peels, spice, oak, vanilla, toasted grain and a touch of that same bitter chocolate-meets-copper from the nose with just a touch of peanuts.
FINISH Long oaky fade with bits of caramel, vanilla and spice.
BALANCE, BODY & FEEL Decent balance, round body and an oily feel.
OVERALL
Old Whiskey River isnt crazy complex, but it is tasty and inviting. As youd expect theres a solid bit of OBE stretching across the nose and to the finish from sitting on the shelf for 30 years. Theres also plenty of oak, caramel, vanilla and spice the signatures of bourbon that reside through the dram.
The experience doesnt stretch too much further than that outside of a light bit of peanuts which youd expect given its a HH product. Other than that this Old Whiskey River about as standard as you can get for a 6-year-old bourbon and that aint too shabby of a thing to be.
Is There A Real Whiskey River
It is possible that whiskey coming down the Mississippi River was referred to by er was treasured, and it may well have been awarded a special name to distinguish it from lesser spirits. The whiskey received a color and flavor reminiscent of Cognac because it was transported in charred casks along the Mississippi River.

Review: Old Whiskey River Bourbon 6 Years Old
Looking for a bourbon you can knock back the better part of bottle, really and never notice you were drinking it? Meet your match.
Old Whiskey River is perhaps the smoothest whiskey Ive ever had. I was shocked to see it was 86 proof. It could have been iced tea for all I knew.
But seriously, OWR goes down easy: Straight, rocks, water doesnt matter. If you cringe when you drink straight liquor, youll have no trouble with The River. Now that of course is a good thing and a bad. The bourbon has little natural character to it a slight oak and vanilla note, but theyre surprisingly faint. The slightest touch of a mixer makes it watery. Its fine in a blended cocktail, but those looking for a complicated straight sipping experience will be disappointed.
It should not go unsaid that Old Whiskey River is inspired by and made for Willie Nelson: It even comes with a Willie Nelson guitar pick wired to the neck of the bottle. Despite the name, you might have trouble finding OWR. And if you do, itll cost you: $32 or so, a bit more than some considerably livelier bottlings.
