Fewer Barrels In 2015
News broke recently that 2015s stock of Pappy Van Winkle is roughly half of what it usually is, after it was discovered that several barrels in this years crop didnt meet the standards of quality set by Buffalo Trace Distillery, the place responsible for bottling the bourbon . According to a statement released by Amy Preske, a PR person at Buffalo Trace, the the angels were extra greedy. By angels, shes referring to the Angels Share, a percentage of whiskey in every barrel that evaporates from the casks during maturation.
The Angels Share is a sort of win/lose situation. A lot of what people like about mature whiskey is how strong the flavors are and while time interacting with the wood of the cask is the major contributor, the Angels Share is an overlooked aspect. The evaporation helps concentrate the flavors because theres less alcohol to dilute them. Think of it as mixing a powdered drink with water. With a ton of water, youre only going to get hints of whatever mix youre using. With only a few drops, youre drinking sugary syrup.
Whiskey works in similar ways. Most casks usually lose about 2 percent of a barrel in maturation per year. For a five year whiskey, you havent lost that much, so theres still a lot of alcohol to distribute those flavors. Casks with bourbon aging 20 years can expect to lose almost 40% and that percentage only increases as time does.

Pappy Van Winkle Alerts On Bottlebeagle
Though Bottlebeagle is extremely helpful for getting stock alerts on rare and out-of-stock bourbon, we currently don’t do alerts for draws. We’d rather send you a text message to go get a bottle you can actually buy!
Plus, there are all sorts of bourbons out there that are much easier to find, and just as good . My personal fave is Weller Special Reserve. It’s a wheated bourbon just like Pappy van Winkle and it runs about $40 at the LCBO. It’s usually released a couple times a year, and you can definitely get liquor stock alerts from Bottlebeagle on it.
Highland Park Cask Strength
Though the Orkney distillerys limited-edition whiskies have been all over the map in recent years, the 2020 debut of an annually available cask-strength expression came as a welcome addition. Matured in both ex-bourbon and sherry casks and featuring Highland Parks signature heathery peat, this whisky packs a punch, topping 120 proof in its first two releases, with no chill-filtration. Its recommended price is $90 right in line with the best of Scotlands barrel-proof single malts, and a bit of a deal for Highland Park.

Jack Daniels 10 Year Old
Launched in 2021 as the first Jack Daniels with a decade of age in more than a century, this Tennessee whiskey is set to roll out annually in limited amounts. It has the same mashbill as Old No. 7 80% corn, 12% malted barley, 8% rye and production was identical in every way except maturation. The barrels for this release spent several years on a top floor before being moved to a bottom floor, near a creek, where cooler temperatures and higher humidity pulled back the throttle on the aging process. That, plus a higher proof than normal Jack, lend the whiskey intense richness and viscosity.
Age Is More Than Just A Number
On average, Pappy is aged longer than most bourbons its aged twice as long as Jim Beam and Jack Daniels, which are both aged for four years. Pappys available in bottles aged for 10, 12, 15, 20, and 23 years. In 2017, the brand released only 710 bottles of a super limited edition 25-year-old bourbon. It retailed for $1,800 dollars, but bottles can be found on the secondary market now for upwards of $30,000.

Its Really F*cking Good
Your question of, Is the bourbon even good? is a valid one and the answer would have to be; Well yes. Its so good that celebrity chef and social culinary anarchist Anthony Bourdain once announced on Twitter that he was seriously considering a Pappy Van Winkle-themed full back tattoo. No, we arent kidding. We knew he was a fan, but not that level. He hasnt said anything since then and we rarely get to see Bourdains full back, but were going to believe he followed through. But Anthony Bourdains willingness to turn his body into a bourbon/ink canvas doesnt tell you anything about the taste.
In the world of bourbon, its a unique one. Obviously, from all the awards. Many attribute Pappy Van Winkles Family Reserves taste to its heavy use of wheat over rye or corn. It gives it less of a bite, and is softer than most other bourbons, which compliments its velvety mouthfeel and notes of vanilla, cherry, and light smokiness very well. Its not a mixing bourbon, so dont commit that capital sin . Sip it like a gentleman and dissect the flavors for yourself. Provided you can find a bottle.
Why Pappy Van Winkle Can Cost Over $2000 A Bottle
Pappy Van Winkle is the unicorn of bourbons. People say its real, but weve only really seen it in pictures, and most of them probably had some image doctoring going on. For all we know, it could have been a pasted on label to a bottle of iced tea. Though, also for all we know, it could be totally real and what Bigfoot drinks with his college buddies every time they get together in the old cave.
The point is, a bottle of Pappy Van Winkle Family Reserve is super rare and the vast majority of people will go their entire lives without sampling any. That kind of makes sense though, as their normal retail price of between $80 and $250 is high enough to prevent a lot of people from partaking. And thats before the bottles hit the aftermarket, where they routinely fetch anywhere from $750 to over $5,000.
Need an example? Heres a bottle of 20-year-old going for more than two grand. But why? Why on earth would we pay thousands of dollars for something we cant rationalize getting drunk on, also known as the primary reason for alcohol? Is this really a drink people have because they like how it tastes? Why would people tolerate such insane prices for simple alcohol?
Well, herere a few reasons.
