Where Does It Come From

two glasses with tequila sunrise garnished with orange and ...

The original tequila sunrise cocktail dates back to the 1930s to the Biltmore Hotel in Arizona, but its not the tequila sunrise recipe thats served today.

Originally it was made from tequila, creme de cassis, fresh lime juice and soda water.

This all changed back in the 70s when Bobby Lozoff and Billy Rice created the modern-day classic version, made from tequila, orange juice and grenadine while working at the Trident in California, just north of San Francisco.

The Trident hosted a private party which was to start the 1972 Tolling Stones tour, the singer Mick Jagger, tried a tequila sunrise, liked it and then everyone else started drinking it.

It really caught on when Jose Cuervo put the tequila sunrise recipe on the back of their tequila bottle.

There are many variations of the tequila sunrise, take a look at the vodka sunrise cocktail.

A Little Bit Of History

The drink was first served in Arizona at the Baltimore Hotel in the 1920s. Its popularity soared when served in Sausalito in the 1970s, by bartenders Bobby Lozoff and Billy Rice. The story goes that in 1972, Mick Jagger tried it at a party and liked it so much, that the band ordered it everywhere they played in the United States.

A Tequila Sunrise has been one of my favorite cocktails to enjoy during the warm summer months. It has just the right amount of sweetness from the grenadine balanced with the smooth citrus flavor of orange juice. But fair warningyou wont taste the tequila. This beauty goes down easy and packs a punch.

A Fun Tequila Sunrise Variation

I personally love cocktails with a little spice, so I added some jalapeños for a little kick! The jalapeños are optional. If youre not a fan of spicy drinks, you can completely leave out the pepeprs;and it will still be delicious.;

To infuse the hot pepper flavor into the drink, I muddle some freshly sliced jalapeños in the tequila and orange juice with a cocktail muddler like this. If you dont have one, you can use the back of a spoon and just press into the peppers as firmly as you can. You dont want to chop or turn them into mush, but you want to press them a little to release some of the oils.

Once youve muddled the jalapeños, and shake or stir the mixture.

Then strain the orange juice/tequila mixture into a tall glass filled with ice and slowly pour in a tablespoon of grenadine syrup.

I like to pour it against the side of the glass so it doesnt get too mixed up with the orange juice, but even if you accidentally forget, the grenadine syrup will settle at the bottom over time, so give it about 30 seconds or so and youll get that beautiful sunrise effect.

Cheers, friends!

What Makes Tequila Sunrise Red

Tequila Sunrise Layered Cocktail

The signature red sunrise effect is created simply by pouring Grenadine in. Because its a heavy syrup, it sinks to the bottom when poured into the tequila-orange juice.

To achieve the cleanest sunrise effect ie. red on bottom, retain orange colour on top, drizzle the syrup down the side of the glass using the back of a teaspoon.

Otherwise, just drizzle it down the inside of the glass straight from the bottle.

Dont just pour it in the middle of the glass if you do this, the syrup discolours the orange juice more.

More affordable types of tequila like silver or gold will work like a charm in this recipe. These varieties have a stronger tequila flavor than other types, but we all know the taste of tequila is such a wonderful combination with fruit juices.

If youre looking for a more mild flavor, try using añejo tequila. While its more expensive, this variety is extremely smooth. I dont suggest using mezcal unless you know youd enjoy smokiness mixed with the fruity flavor of the cocktail.

Stare into the accepted recipe for a tequila sunrise and no amount of imagination will help you conceive of a craft backstory to this juice-bomb club drink of seventies fame. With its simple call of tequila, orange juice, and grenadine, the most a quality minded tender can accomplish is to choose a reputable tequila, fresh squeezed orange juice, and make their own grenadine from real pomegranate juice. Even with the finest ingredients the mix remains a vapid punch, although its appeal can be understood as refreshing in a context where imbibers are dehydrated by other primary intoxicants popular from the 70s disco through 80s club and 90s raves.

For a rework of this drink its often noted that orange juice is a fatal problem. Although some classics like the Bronx and Ward Eight do use the stuff, in its current breakfast form, orange juice lacks the intensity and flexibility that its cousin citrus does for balancing in compelling classic cocktails. This hasnt stopped a generation of tinkerers from offering subversive riffs on their parents tequila sunrise.

Ingredient Notes And Shopping Tips

  • Tequila: For this drink, I recommend either a Blanco tequila or a Silver tequila . Whatever tequila you choose, ensure youre choosing a tequila that is 100% agave.
  • Orange juice: Freshly squeezed is best. However, if youre looking to cut calories or carbs consider a store-bought low-sugar version.
  • Grenadine syrup: Grenadine is a syrup available in the mixers section of your grocery store. I found mine near the cocktail mixes/tonic waters.; It adds a wonderful sweetness and gorgeous color to cocktails like this one.; I also use it in my nonalcoholic Shirley Temple too. Traditionally, grenadine was made with pomegranate juice, and it still retains that fruity flavor.
  • You can also garnish with orange slices and/or maraschino cherries.

An Iconic Drink Made Famous By Movies Songs And American Pop Culture The Swirling Colors Of The Tequila Sunrise Cocktail Appear Exotic While The Simple Three

The infamous cocktail that has remained popular over the years has an interesting history that actually splits into two parts.

As for the origin of the Tequila Sunrise, credit goes to a man named Gene Sulit, who tended bar at the Arizona Biltmore Hotel in the late 1930s and early 1940s. The resort was then, and still is, Arizonas playground for the rich and famous. As the legend recalls, a repeat guest familiar with Mr. Sulit wanted a refreshing beverage to accompany him by the poolside, so he asked the creative bartender to surprise him.

The result was a delicious blend of soda and tequila with crème de cassis and fresh lime juice. Because the crème de cassis was dense compared to the other ingredients, once settled, it created gradations in the color that mimicked a sunrise, hence the concoctions name.

It was only a matter of time before Jose Cuervo picked up on the favored cocktail. In 1973 the tequila giant saw the drink as a marketing opportunity and put the recipe on the back of its tequila bottles. That same year the rock band, the Eagles, recorded a song called Tequila Sunrise as the drinks popularity soared. The cocktail also established itself as a well-known disco drink, as it was enjoyed at many disco clubs. Later on, in 1988, it was still going strong, because Mel Gibson starred in a movie titled Tequila Sunrise. One thing was clear: America was infatuated.
