What To Put In Gin And Tonic

Dante West Village New York City

How to make the best Gin and Tonic

The stylish West Village outpost of Dante puts a Mediterranean twist on their version. In our take on the Gin & Tonic, we wanted to create the feeling of strolling down the Spanish coastline, incorporating the flavors of the region like Manzanilla sherry, lemon and olive. The dash of saline adds a subtle element of brininess and the rosemary and olive garnishes complete the cocktail for a refreshing and effervescent drink, says Linden Pride, co-owner of Dante and Dante West Village.

Getting The Details Right

By now were all familiar with the history of the gin and tonic: first a product of necessity, the G&T made bitter and quinine-rich tonic water palatable with the addition of gin, ice and citrus. Despite its initial medicinal use, the G&T has since become a favourite of drinkers around the globe and is prized for its freshness and subtle complexity.

Its no wonder that, given its international popularity, the G&T has a number of different guises. When it comes to the eternal question of;lemon versus lime, there are a few different takes on the matter. Those who argue for lime say the fruit, with its bright, punchy flavour, offers a boldness that lemon simply cant match. However, many purists argue that lemon is the only choice: as a more delicate fruit, it is less likely to overwhelm the bounty of a gins botanicals.

London Dry Gin Can Be Made Anywhere In The World

“London dry gin is a process, not a location,” Brown says. “It means that all the ingredients must be added pre-distillation. After distillation, you can add only water and additional spirit. You can make London dry gin anywhere, but it would have to follow the process all botanicals being distilled together.”

The process doesn’t add any more prestige, just a method of distilling, Zambakides says: “Hendricks, for example, can’t be a London dry gin, as it puts in cucumber essence after distilling. It’s a still a nice gin.”

When it comes to terms like “floral gin” and “aromatic gin”, these titles refer to the types of botanicals and distilling methods. For example, Bombay Sapphire is good example of a floral gin, and Dodd’s gin is an aromatic gin.

You May Experience Fewer Hangovers If You Drink Gin Every Night Instead Of Other Drinks

How to Make a Gin and Tonic

How would you like to never have a hangover ever again? That may not be entirely possible unless you avoid alcohol, of course ;but you can lessen your chances. ;However, you will have to trade in certain drinks. As Healthline highlighted, studies have found an association between congeners and hangovers. As it happens, dark drinks like brandy and whiskey are high in congeners whereas clear drinks, such as vodka and gin, have much lower levels.;

“While lighter colored drinks may slightly help to prevent a hangover, drinking too many alcoholic beverages of any color will still make you feel bad the morning after,” Daniel Hall-Flavin, a board-certified psychiatrist who specializes in addiction, explained to the Mayo Clinic. “Drinking large amounts of alcohol can cause dehydration, low blood sugar, digestive irritation and disturbed sleep all factors that lead to hangover symptoms.”;

A gin and tonic is a refreshing beverage best enjoyed with lots of ice and a slice of lime.

Or is it?

The question of how best to serve a gin and tonic became a hot topic of conversation when an expert controversially claimed that the popular drink should be served without a lemon or lime garnish, contrary to what many may have been led to believe.

Speaking to Business Insider, Bombay Sapphire senior ambassador Sam Carter stated that in his opinion, the perfect gin and tonic includes ginger, a mint sprig and a generous amount of ice, all served in a balloon glass.

The Independent spoke to three more experts to ascertain whether they hold the same beliefs as Mr Carter.

As one may expect, they each held individual views concerning how to perfect the beloved drink.

In celebration of World Gin Day on Saturday 13 June, heres how to make the perfect gin and tonic according to the experts, from their preferred garnish to the correct ratio of gin to tonic:

Essentially, we made our own tonic syrup that included those botanicals, along with citrus peels, juniper berries, star anise and cinchona bark.

How To Garnish A Classic Gin And Tonic

I like to serve my gin tonics in the style of a Spanish Gin & tonic. In a large wine glass with the following garnishes for flavor:

  • Lime wedges
  • Fill your glass with ice, all the way to the top.
  • Add your gin and the tonic water.
  • Squeeze two lime wedges into your cocktail and stir well to combine.
  • Serve immediately, garnished with a sprig of mint if desired.;

How To Make A Gin And Tonic With Lime And Mint

Hey there! I

Heres what youll need: gin, tonic, lime wedges, fresh mint, and ice cubes. For the glasses, I recommend a rocks glass or high ball glass.

For the perfect gin and tonic, start with fresh mint leaves. Add a couple of clean leaves to a glass and muddle them in the bottom.

Then toss in two or three standard-sized ice cubes or;one over-sized ice cube. Extra large ice cubes;work great in this drink, because they cool quickly & melt slowly. That way your cocktail wont get diluted before you finish it.

Add a shot of gin.

Pour in a tonic thats sweetened with sugar, not high fructose corn syrup. There are lots of options on the market.

Finally, finish off the drink with two wedges of lime. Squeeze both of them into the drink. Then give the rim a swipe with the fruit of the lime. That way with the first sip, you get an extra hit of lime.

The Perfect Gin And Tonic: Simple But Not A Given

It may seem superfluous to write an article about making a gin and tonic. There are just two ingredients and it’s one of the most common cocktails there is. But if you love them as much as I do, you don’t want common, you want perfection.

The gin and tonic was conceived in the 19th century by the British as a way to stave off malaria during their occupation in India. It was believed that quinine, the key ingredient that gives tonic its bitter flavor, was an effective remedy for the disease . This isn’t the first time the British military inadvertently created a classic cocktail. The gin gimlet was of result of the British Navy adding preserved lime juice to their gin ration to prevent scurvy.

On the surface, making a basic gin and tonic is as easy as cocktails get. No shaking, no stirring, you’re just pouring stuff into a glass. And I mean, the name literally is the recipe. But it’s surprisingly easy to screw it up. Most of us have had the displeasure of drinking a terrible gin and tonic, not fun.

To make a great one isn’t hard. It just requires a little attention to detail. Here my keys to the perfect gin and tonic:

Small, Freshly Opened Bottles of TonicThe tonic should be at its most carbonated so using a newly opened bottle is ideal. Those large bottles go flat quickly, so avoid them unless you’ll be making a lot at once. The smaller twelve ounce six packs are little pricier, but well worth it.

Use Two Limes Wedges

You Should Always Finish Your Drink Before The Ice Melts

To make a perfect gin and tonic you should use a highball glass, says Zambakides: “You can also use a balloon glass, but that’s the Spanish way. The way the Spanish make a gin and tonic is almost like a cocktail. They call it a gintonic.”

Be sure to put plenty of ice in the glass, and “always finish drinking your gin and tonic before the ice melts. This makes sure the ice doesn’t dilute the gin.”

You May Reduce Hay Fever Symptoms If You Drink Gin Every Night

Some 50 million Americans suffer from allergies, according to the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America.;A pollen allergy, aka “seasonal allergies” or “hay fever,” is among the most common. And, as any pollen-allergy sufferers will attest, allergies suck. To make matters worse, those who have allergy-induced asthma may find that alcohol only exacerbates their symptoms. According to a study by Asthma UK , 64 percent of asthmatics surveyed claimed that drinking alcohol worsened their condition. However, there’s more to the story.

It’s not that all alcohol worsens asthma or allergies. Instead, it’s certain kinds.;Fermented beverages, like beer and red wine, contain histamine and sulfites which are essentially kryptonite to people with seasonal allergies.

According to Asthma UK’s study, gin contains both a lower amount of histamine and, thanks to how its distilled, zero sulfites. These two things make gin a superior summertime or, you know, anytime beverage for allergy sufferers. So, if you drink gin every night instead of red wine, at least you’ll be less likely to aggravate your allergies via alcohol.

Your Indigestion May Improve If You Drink Gin Every Night Or It May Get Worse

How to make a gin and tonic cocktail

Could a gin and tonic really get rid of your indigestion? Some people have claimed that juniper berries the predominant ingredient in gin has helped abate symptoms related to the condition, including bloating, nausea, and heartburn, according to Very Well Health.

Despite this anecdotal evidence, though, there’s no solid medical proof to back up people’s claims at least not in humans.;A 2007 study conducted by researchers in Canada did find that juniper berry essential oil helped improve digestion in cows .;However, it’s also important to note that, while some people find heartburn relief from gin, others may experience worsening symptoms.

Kevin Ghassemi, a gastroenterologist at the University of California in Los Angeles, told NPR that alcohol in general has a temporary but “direct effect” on heartburn.;This is because alcohol can relax the muscles that connect the stomach and esophagus. “The muscle is supposed to be closed, except when food is passing into the esophagus,” the doctor explained. If alcohol relaxes that muscle, as it has a tendency to do, stomach acid is able to “come back up into the esophagus, and that’s reflux.” So, if you drink gin every night, you may worsen acid reflux symptoms.

FYI, you might want to avoid carbonated beverages, too, as it’s one of the worst things for acid reflux.

You May Experience Some Unpleasant Side Effects If Drink Gin Every Night With Tonic Water

It’s common to mix alcohol with seltzer water, club soda, and tonic water; but they’re all very different things. According to Healthline, tonic contains quinine, which is a compound taken from cinchona bark. This is what gives the beverage a bitter taste. It’s safe to consume the compound, but only in small doses. In fact, due;to side effects that can result from quinine, the U.S.;Food and Drug Administration regulates just how much can be added to tonic water.;

One gin and tonic isn’t likely to lead to any adverse reactions, but it is possible. Healthline explained that stomach cramps, nausea, diarrhea, and vomiting can occur. You may even experience nervousness, confusion, or “ringing in the ears.”;

More severe reactions, including kidney damage, from quinine have also been noted when the compound is used in medication but it’s even more unlikely you’ll experience anything so severe from your nightly G and T. “You would have to drink about two liters of tonic water a day to consume a day’s dose of quinine in pill form,” the publication noted. Still, if you drink gin every night, you might want to lay off the tonic.

Also Don’t Stir Your Gin And Tonic

If you stir your gin and tonic vigorously, you’ll lose some of the fizz. “Stirring will discombobulate the bubbles,” Zambakides says. “Instead, you should just dip your spoon in, and plunge it back out. This will keep the fizz. In Spain, they pour the tonic down a long bar-tending spoon. This helps retain some of the bubbles.”
