Spiked Vietnamese Iced Coffee
Sure, your daily chain iced coffee does the job, but have you ever tried dripping your own java . Traditional Vietnamese iced coffee is made by a small metal drip filter slowly releasing ground coffee into a cup with sweetened condensed milk, then chilling it on ice. Kick things up a notch and add spiced rum — Dao suggests Chairmans Reserve for hints of molasses and nutty flavors.
- 2 ounces spiced rum
- 5 ounces chilled coffee
- 1 ounce sweetened condensed milk
Of The Best Rum Cocktails To Make This Winter
Double Chicken Please, New York City
For years I always thought of rum as a warm-weather drink. Distilled from sugarcane or molasses, a rum cocktail just;feels;tropical, even if there isnt a palm tree in sight.
But those same caramel and spice flavors also work beautifully in winter drinks. Whether you want a toddy-like concoction or an umbrella-worthy cocktail that transports you to an island, rum is as versatile as it is delicious.
Here, more than a dozen spirits pros talked about all the rum drinks theyve been making all seasonfrom a hot buttered banana rum to a Champagne mojito and beyond.
Use Any Type Of Rum: Including Pineapple Rum
This pineapple rum cocktail is unique because you can use any type of rum you like! Most rum drinks call for a specific type of rum. The daiquiri and mojito use white rum, and a Dark and Stormy or hot buttered rum use dark rum. But we created this cocktail to use whatever rum you have on hand. Here are a few types of rum:
- Golden or aged rum: Golden rum is often aged a few years, giving it a complex flavor. Golden rum can have undertones of vanilla, coconut, almond, citrus, or caramel. This drink is fantastic with golden rum.
- Pineapple rum: Pineapple rum is rum thats distilled with fresh pineapple. What does pineapple rum go with? It pairs perfectly with pineapple juice, mint, and coconut: or mix it with Maraschino liqueur for a fruity and complex drink. We happened to have some on hand, and its perfect in this drink.
- White rum: White rum is completely clear and has a straightforward, mild flavor. Using white rum in this drink makes it less complex: so make sure to add the bitters when you make it.
- Dark rum: Dark rum has a robust flavor and is aged longer than white rum. It has a dark color and a rich, developed flavor with caramel, brown sugar, and vanilla notes. Its fantastic in this pineapple rum cocktail.

What Is The Difference Between Punch And A Cocktail
Basically punch serves a bunch and a cocktail is made to serve one or two at a time.
While this is a great party drink, its also fantastic by itself. You can make this recipe for on a Friday after a long week and whisk yourself away to the beach.
Rum punch can be made in many different ways, but I love the simplicity of this cocktail: just rum and pineapple with grenadine for color and a bit of flavor.
How To Create The Jungle Bird Garnish
Cut a pineapple ring that’s about 1/2-inch thick then cut it into triangular wedges. Pull a few leaves of varying sizes from the pineapple and stack them up on top of one another; place the shortest on top and line up the white ends. Use a cocktail skewer to pin a on top of the leaves and through the pineapple wedge. Fan out the leaves to mimic a bird’s tail feathers and rest the garnish inside the glass.

You Might Increase Your Cancer Risk If You Drink Rum Every Night
If you feel like the medical advice available about having one or two drinks per day has done a 180, you’d be right, according to;Dr. Sarah M. Hartz, a physician and scientist at the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis. “It used to seem like having one or two drinks per day was no big deal, and there even have been some studies suggesting it can improve health,” she shared in an interview with Medical News Today. “But now we know that even the lightest daily drinkers have an increased mortality risk.” That means that even one serving of rum every night has adverse effects on your health.
So even though there are some health benefits that come with light alcohol consumption, newer information has changed the game. “Consuming one or two drinks about four days per week seemed to protect against cardiovascular disease, but drinking every day eliminated those benefits,” Hartz continued. “With regard to cancer risk, any drinking at all was detrimental.” Boo!
So, if you drink rum every night, you may want to cut back.

How Strong Is Hot Buttered Rum
Hot buttered rum is a gently spiked drink. Its alcohol content will be determined by how much water you pour. If you’re precise in measuring 5 ounces of hot water and pour an 80-proof rum, the drink weighs in around 10 percent ABV . No matter what, it’s always going to be in the same range as wines.

How To Make This Pineapple Rum Cocktail
This pineapple rum cocktail is like a cross between a mojito and a Hemingway daiquiri. The elements of a mojito? Youll muddle fresh mint to infuse fresh flavor into the entire drink. Other than that, its as easy as shaking it up in a cocktail shaker. Heres what to do:
- Muddle the mint with sugar and lime wedges in a cocktail shaker. Muddle simply means to gently mash. Mashing the mint leaves releases their oils and adds a mint perfume to the drink. If you dont have a muddler, you can use a wooden spoon. See more at How to Muddle Mint.
- Add pineapple, rum, and Maraschino and shake. Add a good handful of ice, then shake the drink until cold. Strain it into a glass.
- Shake with bitters . Adding a few shakes of cocktail bitters adds nuance and intrigue to the flavors. This is especially important if youre using white rum.

You Might Have A Hangover In The Morning If You Drink Rum Every Night
If you drink rum every night and always go hard with it, there’s a good chance you might wind up with a hangover the next morning. And as noted by Dr. Regina Krel, a headache medicine specialist at Hackensack University Medical Center, there’s a lot going on when you have a hangover. “The actual mechanism of what happens during a hangover is still not clear but is thought to be a result of the toxicity of acetaldehyde on the body, changes in electrolytes, dehydration, and low blood sugar,” she penned in an article for Hackensack Meridian Health. “The most common symptoms during a hangover include headache, nausea, dizziness, feeling sleepy or sluggish.” Yuck.
So if you wake up every morning with a hangover, you may want to cut back on the amount of rum you drink every night. Additionally, make sure you’re eating enough while drinking, as well as avoiding sugars and drinking plenty of water those actions can help you prevent a hangover, according to the Mayo Clinic. And fortunately there are a few breakfasts that can help cure your hangover that you can enjoy the next morning like breakfast tacos.
These Simple Recipes Will Up Your At
Based on the explosion of tiki drinks and new releases of rums that are every bit as complex as whiskey, it seems like everyone suddenly remembered that rum is delicious. It works well in lowbrow drinks like a rum & Coke, which can be enjoyed at the seediest of dives, and is also equally at home in an elaborate parrot-shaped mug or as a neat, top-shelf pour.

This Is What Happens To Your Blood Pressure When You Drink Rum Every Night
As registered dietician Laura Krebs-Holm pointed out, drinking rum in moderation which is one serving per day or evening can have a positive impact on your blood pressure. But if you’re overdoing it, the opposite can be the case, according to Dr. Sheldon Steps, emeritus professor of medicine and a former chair of the Division of Nephrology and Hypertension in the Department of Medicine at Mayo Clinic. “Drinking too much alcohol can raise blood pressure to unhealthy levels,” he penned in an FAQ for the Mayo Clinic. “Having more than three drinks in one sitting temporarily increases your blood pressure, but repeated binge drinking can lead to long-term increases.”
Fortunately Steps has some advice for drinkers who are looking to decrease their blood pressure. “Heavy drinkers who cut back to moderate drinking can lower their systolic blood pressure by 2 to 4 millimeters of mercury and their diastolic blood pressure by 1 to 2 mm Hg.” That’s some good news!

Yaka Hula Hickey Dula
The Spruce Eats / S&C Design Studios
While you may not have heard of this drink, it’s one you won’t forget. Every time you make one, you get to say “Yaka Hula Dickey Dula,” and that alone is a reason to mix it up. The taste is pretty amazing, too. It’s a fascinating combination of rum and dry vermouth accented with pineapple. That’s a bit unusual, but the pairing works very well.
Three Dots And A Dash
This cocktail is an absolute tiki classic. Invented by Donn Beach, the name means Victory in morse code. Its also the namesake of the incredibly popular tiki bar in Chicago.
It contains three types of rum, so might be a tough one to make at home. But take a closer look at the garnish: three maraschino cherries and a piece of pineapple. Its a symbol of the drinks namesake.
What Is Fassionola Syrup
Fassionola syrup is a tropical fruit syrup that was reportedly invented in the 1930s by Donn Beach, a founder of America’s tiki bars. Like many of his recipes, it was never revealed. The red syrup has since been createdboth commercially and in homemade recipesand is a fruity blend of passion fruit, papaya, strawberry, mango, pineapple, and hibiscus. In modern renditions of the hurricane, Fassionola has been replaced by passion fruit juice, purée, or syrup. At Pat O’Brien’s today, the hurricane is made with a premixed syrup and juice blend, which the bar markets and sells for home use. Other bars in New Orleans and beyond stick to the freshly made hurricane, similar to this recipe.
