What’s Good With Spiced Rum

What Is Captain Morgan

Rumbullion Spiced Rum Review | What to mix with Spiced Rum Drinks

Captain Morgan is an old brand of spiced rum that originated in Jamaicas Kingston. Manufactured by Diageo, the golden-color drink was introduced in 1944, though now, it has a few other variants which many rum-lovers prefer drinking straight. It gets its name from Sir Henry Morgan, a Welsh privateer of the Caribbean Sea who lived in the 17th century. Known for its exotic taste, the alcohol percentage of this carb-less, gluten-free liquor varies between 17.5 and 50, with a 1-oz serving containing about 64 calories.

How Is Rum Made

Compared to some other spirits of the world defined by strictly-regimented production methods, there’s no one universally proscribed way to make rum. That lack of standardization may have something to do with the fact that it’s a product of the West Indies, as different islands have their own way of doing things when it comes to rum. Puerto Rico keeps things light, for example, while Jamaica is more associated with aged rum produced with help from something called “dunder.”

Molasses, a byproduct of the sugarcane refining process, is a fairly essential ingredient no matter what rum you’re working with, but even that’s not a universal necessity. Sugarcane juice sometimes takes its place when traditional sugar refining methods aren’t possible. Sugarcane juice more commonly forms the basis of rum in France’s former Carribbean territories. Down in Brazil, fermented sugarcane juice makes a slightly different but equally wonderful spirit called cachaça.

Rum distillation begins in earnest when water and yeast is added to that molasses or sugarcane juice, which helps kickstart the fermentation process. The specific yeast employed at this phase is the earliest point of divergence between what will become light and dark rums: Lighter rums are often associated with “faster” yeasts, while more fuller-flavored rums tend to be associated with “slow” yeasts. However, it’s worth noting that the yeast itself doesn’t lend a rum its particular color.

Sekforde Light & Spiced Rum Mixer

The fourth one I want to show you is this. This is relatively unheard of. This is Sekforde Light and Spiced Rum Mixer. Waitrose are the main ones on your high streets that you can get this from. I think there’s three, if not four in the range. There’s one for bourbon. One for Tequila. And one for Gin as well. Absolutely amazing. Really love this. The flavour is Lime, Mint Rose and Cacao. I’m just going to read you the back. The tasting notes on the bottle. Lime and green herbs give a sophisticated edge to the rounded sweetness of a good rum. The finish is lengthened with Ecuadorian cacao bitters and lifted with a hint of mint. Now I absolutely love this with a lighter rum. Not necessarily Spiced Rums. I haven’t really played too much about with it with Spiced Rum yet. But lighter rums, Plantation Three Stars, Havana Club 3yo, lengthen, instead of Soda in a Mojito. It just lengthens that out to give it a whole new twist. Absolutely cracking £1.50 from Waitrose. Go and try them now. I’m gonna start using this a bit more. I’m gonna get a few more bottles and start using this with the Spiced Rum, because I don’t use this in the tasting as I do for the Spiced Drums. But for the lighter rums, I absolutely love it. It’s gorgeous. Very kind of different to what you’re used to. Is very different to these. But, Sekforde Light and Spiced rum mixer drink.

Old Jamaica Pineapple Soda

The fifth one I want to showcase this again has been out for a very long time. It goes in fits and starts. Tesco, Sainsbury’s, in the UK, some of them do carry this. You get this online from Amazon in the case of 24. This is old Jamaica Pineapple Soda. Think Lilt without the Grapefruit. I absolutely love this with any kind of rums. With these golden aged rums, Plantation Barbados 5yo is my absolute favourite with that. Absolutely love it with spiced rums. Just amazing. Kind of big, obviously it’s just the sort of a pineapple fizzy, Ive had an equivalent pineapple Fanta. I don’t think you could get it in the UK, but that is lovely. I think, you know if more wholesalers took this on, I think this would be a big deal in just simple serves. Rum and pineapple with a bit of lime maybe, or as a finishing to cocktails. So that is Old Jamaica Pineapple Soda.

Right, now I did mention I had a lot more than the five they are the five that are relatively unheard of and I think they’ve got a big part to play going forward in 2020, in the whole sort of rum thing. But there’s quite a few mixers on the market, again that you may not have heard of, or you may not have thought work well with Rum and Spiced Rum, so I’m just going to quickly whizz through these. Some of them you’ll see are behind me there.

Fever Tree Spiced Orange Ginger Ale

These Spiced Rums Will Make You a Believer

The third one I want to show you is a fever trees a Spiced Orange Ginger Ale. It’s been out a very long time, but, apparently, I heard the other day they stopped making it for a while. I don’t know whether that’s true. There is another one in the range as well. It’s the Smoky Ginger Ale, but the one I want to focus on, it’s the Spiced Orange, because the flavour profile of that goes amazing with a Rum and Spiced Rum. Very delicate. Its not as fiery in ginger, as Ginger beer or anything like that. Just the subtle twist of orange coming through. I know a few people to drink this with whiskey as well. But for me, it’s out and out rum. Again anything, even stuff for your Rums, like your Appleton’s, their Signature Blends, your Mount Gays those sort of style of Rums. Plantation right through to some of the Spiced Rums as well. It’s just the catch all. Absolutely love it. Morrison’s, apparently at the time of filming, Morrison’s have now got the 500ml bottles. These bottles, you’ll be able to get from most wholesalers. They will all carry them now. So that is a Fever Trees spiced Orange ginger ale.

That’s the sort of distinction most of us could pick up on by sight, but spending some time investigating what separates these types of rum is a worthwhile exercise especially if you want to learn how to spice some rum yourself.

The Best Spiced Rum For Every Budget

Overall, spiced rum tends to be less popular than other versions, perhaps because not many are great for sipping neat and a lot of them are quite similar. Cinnamon and vanilla are common flavors and its sometimes difficult to be unique.

Therefore, the best spiced rum is one that stands out and offers something different, without losing the quintessential spicy qualities that make it what it is.

Spiced rum is simple in theory, created from a base of traditional, distilled rum and flavored with spices and botanicals. The most common additions are cinnamon, clove, vanilla, ginger, and cardamom, though the potential is unending.

Spiced rum is often not terribly expensive, as its a common ingredient in mixed drinks. The base rum used is not usually a high-end or expensive rum. That being said, some do still climb in price a little. This is due to factors like the rarity of the spices used, how complex the medley of spices is, and how its made.

For example, a spiced rum made with organic spices will be more expensive as organic spices are, by nature, more expensive to grow due to the lack of fertilizers and other enhancements being used. A similar pattern is true for gin.

Our list also contains a special rum that is made from botanicals sourced from eight countries. This rum is pricier because sourcing from so many different places makes for a lengthy and more expensive process.

And, if you want to explore rum in more depth, why not try out a rum of the month club?
