What Is The Cheapest 100 Agave Tequila

Best Overall: Tequila Ocho Plata

THIS IS THE BEST TEQUILA!

Courtesy of Drizly.com;

Region: Jalisco | ABV: 40% | Tasting Notes: Pepper, Citrus, Grass, Stone fruit

The beautiful story and unique process behind this tequila really help it shine, says Chasse. The family that makes Tequila Ocho Plata has been distilling for generations. They use traditional brick ovens to slow-roast extremely ripe agave, which is chosen from specific fields each year, so that the nuances of the terroir and;weather come out, especially in the blanco.

It changes depending on the field and year, says Chasse, but in general, it offers crisp, clean peppery notes, bright citrus and grassy flavors, along with the fruitiness of the extra-ripe agave. The finish also offers a nice balance between floral and earthy notes.;

Good to Know: How should you drink a sipping tequila? Hurley and Chasse suggest trying it neat in a tequila glass . Add a few drops of water to open up the flavor. Medina prefers to sip his aged tequila in a snifter with one large cube of ice, which melts slowly, keeping the spirit cool but not diluting it.

Don Julio Aejo Vs The Competition

  • 1800 Añejo
  • Tequila AviónAñejo
  • Casamigos Añejo
  • check Don Julio Añejo

Sweet and peppery characterize the initial palate of the 1800 and mid-palate transition. The 1800 Añejo shows traces of cinnamon, candied pears, butterscotch and toasted oak, plus a finish of cocoa and banana bread. On the other hand, wild honey and butterscotch are on display when the Don Julio/DJ Añejo enters your mouth. ;;

However, what sinks 1800 is an observed strong presence of smokiness in the taste. For some, strong traces of the roasting process may have settled in the final product, likely an oversight due to 1800 being part of the mass market tequila assembly line of Jose Cuervo. In contrast, the DJ consistently keeps the smoky taste to a minimum, or even at zero presence.

Don Julios añejo may be more expensive than the Avión añejo.

However, the Don Julio/DJ presents a strong case of value-for-money tilting brains, lips, noses, tongues, throats and opinions towards its entry level aged tequila.

One, the DJ añejo consistently displays no alcohol burn, with a nip in the Avión. Everything is bright, lightly spiced, rich and smooth, and you dont forget the agave presence in the Don Julio.

Second, the DJ has a consistently minimal tinge of American oak residue when the añejo hits your mouth. On the other hand, the Avión has an up-down presence of oak in the taste, which was a turn-off for some.

Casamigos añejo is neck-and-neck against Don Julios añejo in terms of pricing.

Is All Tequila Made From Agave

Short answer: yes.

It sounds a little like an SAT question: All tequila is mezcal, but not all mezcal is tequila.

Tequila can only be made from:

  • Blue agave
  • Agave tequilana

Thats it. Thats the list. Anything else is mezcal, which can be made from over 30 varieties of agave.

Agave is sort of like a cactus, but its really a succulent. And it only has one life to give for our drinking amusement. After maturing for around 8 years, their hearts or piñas are ripped out, steamed, crushed, and fermented into tequila.

Traditionally, one way those piñas are crushed is the tahona process. Basically, a massive volcanic wheel rolls over the steamed agave hearts. Traditionally, and even now in at least one place, its still done by donkey.

These are known as mixtos, and perhaps unsurprisingly, are lower quality. Theyre the culprit behind most of our nasty tequila hangovers.

Select reposado sare aged for one more month in old Scotch whisky casks for the Don Julio Reposado Double Cask variant.

As for the añejos, their aging goes for a full 18 months in the companys own reposado barrels. The result is more agave and less oak in the flavor, which is great for the tequila purist.

Avin Aejo Papaya Smash Recipes

The out-of-the-box thinking of Avion is reflected in their recommended recipes for cocktails, such as the Papaya Smash. Papaya is a fruit not usually recommended when being paired with tequila, but Avión did its homework. The result is a mix that might remind one of a margarita, helped a lot by the Aperol orange liqueur that brings out both the sweet and the bitter in the drink.
