How Much Does Tequila Cost

As there are lots of different types of tequila, prices can be surprisingly sporadic. However, its not impossible to have an idea of what budget youll need when buying some.

Ignoring mixto and flavoured tequila, blanco and plata 100% blue agave tequila can be as low as just under $30. However, premium brands may retail it for as high as $60.

Given that ageing tequila requires both time and additional labour, it can be more expensive. That being said, some resposado expressions may go as low as $30 as well.

Nevertheless, its reasonable to expect that high-quality tequila that has been aged for multiple years can fetch for similar prices to Scotch whisky and cognac. Therefore, dont be surprised when you see some good bottles of extra añejo for over $150.

How To Drink It

How to Buy Tequila in the Mexican Caribbean

As for how to celebrate independencia in the most authentic way, you can start out by choosing a great tequilaone that is made from 100% blue Weber agave.

It shouldnt need to be said, but a great spirit like that isnt something you slam. If you like cocktails, a good blanco tequila will work real magic in a Margarita. Bad news if you love slushies: the most authentic version of the Margarita is not frozen. Fresh lime juice, triple sec, and quality tequila, shaken together with ice is the way to go. An even more authentic mixed drink, however, is the Paloma: a cool highball of tequila mixed with a refreshing grapefruit soda and a lime garnish that is the best-loved tequila-based cocktail in Mexico itself.

But to be truly authentic, sip a great tequila neat. Theres nothing wrong with enjoying it slightly chilled, though the flavors and aromas will open up at room temperature, offering more complexity to savor.

To bring out those nuances, it can help to alternate each sip with a contrastive alternative. In Mexico, the most authentic counterbalance is a shot of sangrita: a nonalcoholic mixer usually composed of tomato, orange, and lime juice, seasoned with onion, Worcestershire and chili or hot sauce. You can find packaged sangrita in specialty shops, but if you make your own, a fresh homemade version will offer far sharper flavors. Take a sip of tequila, savor it, then switch to the sangrita. Try the tequila again and see what new flavors and aromas you can identify.

How Do They Make It

In order to make a complex reposado tequila without losing the original agave flavor of silver tequila, American or French oak barrels are typically used by distillers to age the spirit. In the process of aging the spirit, glycerin is slowly absorbed from the wood, which generates distinctive flavor notes that compliment the sweet profile of the agave. Aging in the oak barrels also gives the reposado tequila its natural golden color without any artificial color being added. Where Does Tequila Come From

Tequila is a distilled spirit made from the blue agave plant, and it only comes from Mexico. To be called Tequila, by law, it must come from one of five Mexican states: Jalisco , Guanajuato, Nayarit, Michoacán or Tamaulipas.

There are other spirits distilled from agave, but those are called either Mezcal or Destilado de Agave. Similar to the rule in the US for bourbon whiskey, all Tequilas are Mezcals, but not all Mezcals are Tequila. The oldest Tequila distillery is Grupo José Cuervo, which distills the famous José Cuervo Tequila, founded in 1758.

What Are The Different Types Of Tequila

Tequila is classified according to the length of time the spirit was aged. As Tequila ages, it goes from a young Blanco to a more mature Añejo. During the aging process, the Tequilas color and flavors deepen, and the spirit develops a smoother taste.

Here is a deeper dive into the five types of Tequila:

  • Blanco Tequila, more commonly known as silver Tequila, can be bottled immediately or aged up to two months and is the purest flavor of Tequila because it contains no added flavoring agents and is the best representation of the blue agave plants natural sweetness
  • Joven Tequila, or more commonly referred to as gold Tequila, derives its name from the golden color imparted upon the liquid from agents that add flavor to the Tequila beyond the blue agave plant
  • Reposado Tequila is aged for two to 12 months in an oak container, giving it time to turn a pale golden color
  • Añejo Tequila, where añejo means “aged,” spends one to three years in an oak barrel similar to the ones used for aging whiskey or wine. It gets smoother, darker and the taste is sweeter thanks to the barrel
  • Extra Añejo Tequila is barrel-aged for more than three years. The spirit becomes a dark amber color, and the flavor is rich with nuts, caramel, fruit, and spice, similar to whiskey or an older rum.

Let’s Talk About Aging Tequila

The amount of aging and the amount of agave used to make a tequila are what create the different varieties. Each variety has a different type of flavor, aroma, and price point.

These are blanco, reposado, añejo, and extra añejo.

Keep in mind that añejo doesnt mean best, it just means oldest. If you prefer the flavor of blanco, then buy blanco. Extra añejos are often the most expensive tequilas.

Tequila’s Appellation Of Origin

In 1977, the Mexican government issued a law that determined that a drink could only be labeled tequila if it was produced in a particular area of Mexico and was made from the Agave Tequilana Weber, commonly known as “blue agave.”

The Mexican government contended that tequila is a cultural product that should only bear that name if distilled from the blue agave plant indigenous to a specific climatic region of Mexico. Most agree that this is the case, and in 2002, UNESCO recognized the;Agave Landscape and Ancient Industrial Facilities of Tequila as a World Heritage Site. If you go, besides seeing how tequila is made, there are many other interesting things to do in tequila country.

The production process for tequila is strictly regulated. By law: tequila can only be labeled and sold by that name if blue agave constitutes over half of the fermented sugars in the drink. Premium tequilas are made with 100% blue agave and labeled as such, but lower quality tequila may include up to 49% cane alcohol or brown sugar alcohol, in which case it is labeled “mixto,” or mixed. The regulatory council allows these lower quality tequilas to be exported in barrels and bottled abroad. Premium tequilas, on the other hand, must be bottled within Mexico.

Quality Features Of A Good Tequila:

  • 100% Agave: Tequila can only be made without additives from fully mature agaves.
  • No blisters: Good tequila should not blister when shaken. Bubbles are a sign that extra sugar has been used in the manufacturing process.
  • Jimador: Thats what the Mexican tequila experts call themselves. They harvest the agave by hand and decide when the plant is ready for harvest.
  • Slow cooking: After the leaves have been cut off, the fruits are quartered and cooked slowly. This process takes three days.
  • Aged tequila : Tequila matures in oak barrels for a special taste experience.

Whats Worth The Splurge

I dont drink only cheap tequila, of course, especially when Im writing about some all-inclusive resort and its an open bar. If you want to know my favorites if money is no object, those would be Don Julio 1942 and Clase Azul in the nice porcelain bottle. The 99,000 Horas from my home state of Guanajuato is quite good too and is a terrific value. Cuervos Reserva de la Familia makes a great gift because the artistic box changes each year and it is consistently good, but I personally would have trouble parting with a hundred bucks to purchase it myself.

Despite what the marketers want you to believe, there is very little correlation between price and quality. This is very clear every time you see the winners from spirits competitions where there was a blind taste test. If you see a bottle at the duty-free shop thats $250, you can bet that $200 of that is usually going to marketing and packaging. Those bottles seldom rank the highest in judging competitions. You can often do just as well by spending far less.

How about you? Have you found any happy cheap tequila surprises on the shelf or at the bar in Mexico?

Villa Lobos Extra Aejo

Originally slated only for the UK market, this passion project of legendary distiller Carlos Camarena was recently made available in the US. His goal is to make as expressive a tequila as possible, and nowhere is that more evident than in the extra añejo. After four years aging in barrels, theres the expected battery of oak, vanilla, toffee and caramel, but what makes Villa Lobos special is those flavors travel hand in hand with roasted agave that somehow still tastes fresh, alongside pepper and a bit of earth.

Tequila Tasting Tips for Tourists

The;10 best selling tequilas in Mexico;are;produced in the Mexican state of Jalisco. Tequila is synonymous with Mexico, just like champagne is with France. The countrys warm climate and nutrient-rich soil are ideal for growing blue agave, from which tequila is made. The state of the soil is also important in determining the taste of the tequila. Tequila created in the highlands has a sweeter, floral and fruitier flavor than lowland tequila.

About 80% of all blue agave is grown in Jalisco, and almost all tequila distilleries are located in the state. So Jalisco is the main tequila producing region in Mexico. Mexican law also allows certain states like Tamaulipas, Nayarit, Michoacan, and Guanajuato to produce tequilas. Tequila has the denomination of origin status, which means that the spirit will only be called tequila if it is produced and bottled in the specific areas of Mexico mentioned above.
