What Is The Smoothest Gin

Hans Reisetbauer Blue Gin

How Gin is Made

Theres a temptation to think of this as the fun side project of Hans Reisetbauer, an Austrian distillery better known for making some of the worlds best eaux de vie. Yet that would detract from the serious quality showcased in this gin, which ranks among the cleanest, most concentrated, crisp expressions on the market. This calls for an extremely dry Martini with a tiny expression of lemon . Average price: $45. Rating: 94.

The Botanist Islay Dry Gin

While many modern gins veer away from juniper, The Botanist brings the attention back to gins foremost ingredient. This makes it a great choice for purists, as well as newbies looking to appreciate fine, juniper-forward gin.

The Botanist has a total of 22 botanicals all of which are hand-foraged on the Scottish island of Islay. All these botanicals come through in each step of the tasting process with a crisp, flowery, citrus flavor. This makes it one of the best gins for sipping straight, although its also great for upgraded cocktails.

Sipsmith London Dry Gin

This side of the Atlantic, Sipsmith has yet to fully build the reputation it enjoys in the U.K., where it stands as a pioneer of craft distilling. Thats quite perplexing given the quality of this London Dry, which oozes fresh and pure botanical character. Balanced, bright, and bold, this is the quintessential gin for refreshing G& Ts garnished with a lemon, in true British fashion. Average price: $35. Rating: 93.

Best London Dry: Beefeater London Dry

Region: UK | ABV: 44 percent | Tasting Notes: Juniper, Lemon, Almond

There are many well-known brands that make the classic London dry style of gin, but Beefeater is one of the best and most ubiquitous. While London dry gin does not have to actually be made in London, it does need to meet other criteria regarding distillation proof, with no flavor or color added after distillation.

Beefeaters nine-botanical recipe includes juniper, Seville orange, orris, and lemon peel, creating an easy-sipping gin that works well in any cocktail.

This iconic product is a great representation of the category, offering enough juniper, clean citrus, and my favorite classic addition: almonds. The almonds lend a nutty tone and more importantly, they add some body to the mouthfeel. Jonathan Stanyard, bartender

Portobello Road Savoury Gin

Brockmans Intensely Smooth Gin

The gin formerly known as King Theodore Of Corsica was originally only served at 186 Portobello Road, but Jake F Burger, cofounder of the four-floor ginstitute The Distillery, couldnt resist sharing his savoury spirit. Made from a collection of Mediterranean botanicals, including Calabrian bergamot peel, green gordal olives from Seville and rosemary , this is a sophisticated but stunning grown-up gin that might be the closest we get to a European holiday this year. GQs top tip is to serve it with Fever-Trees Mediterranean Tonic for the ultimate sunshine-meets-the-sea hit. £35. Atmasterofmalt.comandwaitrose.com

A Note On ‘dry’ Martinis

Up until the early twentieth century, the martini used a sweet gin , and sweet vermouth. The word “dry” then came to mean a martini made with equal parts dry gin and dry vermouth. It wasn’t until fairly recently that “dry” meant flipping the bird at a vermouth bottle in the liquor store where you bought your gin.

When considering topics off limits for the Thanksgiving table, I think of religion and politics, but you might add martini ratios the subject can be that divisive. If you’re curious about what happens when our favorite martini gin is used in a drier version of the cocktail, you can see my notes below.

The Kyoto Distillery: Top Shelf Gin To Try Once In Your Life

The Kyoto Distillery is Japans first dedicated artisanal gin distillery. The region might typically be known for sake, but a rising level of interest in other spirits has kept tourists returning for the gin, too.

Its focus is on using local botanicals to create a smooth, enjoyable drink in the form of its Ki No Bi Kyoto Dry Japanese Gin. This gin wasnt available internationally until 2017 but its release was well worth the wait. It uses a spirit base distilled from rice combined with juniper, yellow yuzu, hinoki wood chips, bamboo, gyokuro tea, and green sansh .

The result is a unique gin that encompasses every inch of its name, which translates to The Beauty of the Seasons. Alongside citrus, tea and herbal flavours comes a spicy edge from the ginger root added during the distillation process.

It might not be the easiest gin to get hold of, but its a bottle worthy of a good spot in the liquor cabinet if you can find it.

Best For Martinis: Monkey 47 Gin

The Process | Aviation Gin

For a martini, I like Monkey 47, describes Spencer Elliott of Bounce Sporting Club. A gin that might hit your wallet a bit more than the others but delivers just as much. Rich and smooth this gin pairs excellently with a bit of vermouth.”

Made in Germanys Black Forest with 47 different types of botanicals, Monkey 47 is diverse, complex, and lovely in a spirit-forward drink like a martini. Stephanie Reading, the bar manager at Birdie Gs in Los Angeles, agrees. For my martinis, I tend to choose a lighter, more delicate ginone with subtle flavors and a rounder finish than a classic London Dry. That said, I’ve really gotten into Monkey 47, which in my opinion makes a delicious, dangerously drinkable classic martini. Its subtle flavors and unique style lend to a quite refreshing and surprisingly smooth complexity that is completely unique to the brand.

ABV: 47% | Volume: 750mL | Predominant Botanicals: Pine, pepper, vegetal

Ryan Gray, of Mothers Ruin, also loves Monkey 47 in a Negroni. The Negroni is a simple drink to make but an easy one to mess up. Campari can be a bit of a flavor bully in drinks so you need a gin that stands up to it. Monkey 47 is the gin for me as its a deeply complex gin with a lot of big flavors that work in harmony with the rest of the ingredients in this cocktail.”

ABV: 42% | Volume: 750mL | Predominant Botanicals: Apricot, oak, caramel

Preparation Of The Martini

The martini is made with gin and vermouth and is garnished with an olive or a lemon twist.

The expected garnish became the drinkers choice of a green olive or a twist of lemon peel.

A dry martini is made with little to no vermouth, and is called dry because it is lacking an ingredient, as a standard martini calls for dry vermouth. If an extra dry martini is ordered, it will result in even less or no vermouth being added.

We get it, its not every day people talk about gins to drink straight. They certainly dont jump to mind when you think about enjoying gin neat. Region: California | ABV: 45 percent | Tasting Notes: Pine, Sage, Juniper

Californias St. George Spirits has been making excellent craft spirits in different categories for decades now. The trio of gins it produces are truly excellent, with the Terroir expression leading the pack. This offers a taste of California, made with Douglas fir, California bay laurel, coastal sage, and juniper of course, making for a piney and woody spirit. Try this in a Martini to experience what using an altogether different style than London dry can bring to the drink.

Opihr: Best Tasting Gin

Although gin isnt typically enjoyed neat, Opihrs spiced gin might just be the exception to the rule. Pronounced O-peer, the brand is a relative newbie on the spirits scene that offers an adventure from start to finish.

Opihr proudly refuses to branch out with its single offering: the Spiced London Dry Gin. Its a drink with a difference thats best enjoyed on the rocks or neat to really taste each and every botanical used. Opihr is made with Indonesian Cubeb berries, Indian black pepper and Moroccan coriander amongst other botanicals, which all come together to produce a unique, spicy drink.

Its a refreshing gin with a citrus edge, with a playful spoonful of spice experienced the whole way through. Dont want to sip it neat? Try it with tonic water but nothing heavier or youll miss out on some of the more subtle flavours.

Blended Whisky Ballantines 17

Instead of starting off with single malts, why not go for a blended whisky right off the bat? Sure, they might not be as pure as the single malts, but blended whisky can be really flavorful.

Just look at the success of Johnnie Walker as a prime example of how enjoyable blended whisky can be. Were not going to recommend ol Johnnie, though chances are that you or your friend have already tried it out, and it didnt really click.

So instead, we recommend Ballantines 17-years-old to try out. Its really smooth but has some complex flavors, so keep that in mind before sipping so you can prepare for it.

Nolets Reserve: The Most Expensive Gin

Everything about Nolets Reserve gin is superior. The entire goal of the distillery is to create the very best, from the exclusive high quality, invaluable ingredients, to the tiny production and minuscule allocation.

This modern gin is distilled at a higher ABV than usual, too, at 52.3% compared to a standard of between 40-48%. Despite the number, its an easy-to-drink gin thats smooth and round throughout. Its high price point comes mostly from its use of saffron, which is more expensive per ounce than gold and isnt used sparingly in Nolets distillation process.

The saffron also gives Nolets Reserve its slightly tinted amber colouring and warm, deep spice flavour. Unsurprisingly, its a gin with plenty of depth, balancing bitter notes like verbena with florals like Turkish rose and lavender.

Only a few hundred bottles of Nolets are produced each year, overseen by master distiller Carolus Nolet Sr. Each bottle is also personally numbered and signed by the master distiller before its sold. Its a wonderful, complex gin created to be sipped.

Smooth Whiskeys For Beginners

Aviation Gin Riblet

Lets face it whiskey isnt for everyone. Sure, it may have some flavor in it, but for the most part, its a hard drink, and it doesnt go down as easily as many other liquors in the market. Thats exactly why were going to talk about smooth whiskeys for beginners.

Many people would prefer other hard drinks over whiskeys, such as tequila or even vodka, crazily enough.

And lets not forget the alcoholic beverage everyone loves beer. Theres not much to hate about beer as a whole, and Id bet you that your average person would, more likely than not, rather have a beer than a whiskey any day of the week.

Thats not to say that whiskey is inferior to beer, or any other alcoholic drinks for that matter. In fact, theres a lot to talk about when it comes to whiskey.

There are different variants of whiskey, based on the country of origin or based on the ingredient in the rye mash . Theyre all good, and youll have to try a couple before you figure out which one suits your tastes best.

I used to be really into bourbon. Then it was rye. Now Ive only got Scotch in my house.

If I had to choose one single whiskey to recommend for beginners, it would be Makers Mark bourbon. Its easy to fine, relatively inexpensive, and drinking bourbon sounds cool. Its a smooth whiskey with a little bit of sweetness to it , so a very cool and tasty whiskey for beginners.

How We Picked These Products

Here at Delish, we take our alcohol very seriously, so we knew we had to find some reliable experts to help us find the perfect quaffs. We turned to informed sippers ranging from master bartenders to beverage directors at some of the top restaurants in the country, as well as a few knowledgeable gin lovers on our own team. After reviewing their recommendations and online brand reviews, as well as gauging factors like distillation process, flavor profile, and affordability, these are the best bottles of gin you can buy in 2022.

  • Boasts 19 botanicals
  • Not very juniper-forward

Another favorite of Battless, St. George Botanivoreis super versatile and perfect for negronis, as well as other traditional, gin-based drinks, like gin and tonics or martinis.

This contemporary style gin features unique floral and herbal notes from 19 different botanicals used during the distillation process, which Battles says results in a clean and well-balanced flavor. It may not be as big on the juniper notes beloved by classic gin fans, but were still impressed.

What Makes For Good Rye Whiskey

Being that few palates are exactly the same, asking what makes for good rye whiskey is something of a superfluous question. Nevertheless, the top rye whiskeys will usually go down smooth, and deliver a distinctive tier of character, while the worst ones will yield significant burn, and leave a foul taste behind. Beyond that, its usually a matter of preference. For instance, some drinkers prefer an overly spicy rye, while others like rye that balances notes of spice and sweetness. Meanwhile, cheaper rye whiskeys are usually best served in a mixed drink , as theyre probably going to retain some heat or bitterness due to lack of aging.

Lonewolf Cloudy Lemon Gin

We were lucky enough to visit the Brewdog Brewery last year and were surprised just how much effort it was putting into its spirits range. So much, we just had to get a bottle of their gin in to taste. In the end we got two: its dry gin and this cloudy lemon variant. If the sun ever comes out again, then this is the gin to go for. It’s a creamy gin, rather than being acidic and goes really well with a plain tonic. The lemon blast is natural, not chemical, and we can’t get enough.

It took us a while to get round to tasting Tobermory Gin as it came to us with an adult colouring book. Once we put the pencils down, though, this is a great-tasting gin from the Isle of Mull. The Hebridean gin is distilled with botanicals including juniper, tea, heather, elderflower, sweet orange peel and uses a splash of spirit from its whisky distillery. This makes for a G& T with something of a kick, packed with earthy notes. We had it with ginger ale, too, and that was a lovely pairing

We first heard about Colonsay Cait Sith on World Gin Day. Since then we have been sent a bottle and it is deserving to be in this list. It’s a Scottish gin that’s Old Tom style , so it’s less about the botanics and more about the orange, pink grapefruit and vanilla taste. It’s a really refreshing gin that we had with tonic and lots of ice. It also has one of the nicest bottles we have seen, so if you are all about the shelf appeal, then this is the gin for you.
