    Notes On Tequila Styles

Tequila is made in a variety of styles that display different colors, flavors and aromas. Taste and experiment to discover your favorite style.

    • Silver: Clear color, un-aged distilled tequila. Clean pure taste.
    • Gold: Amber colored from caramel color or from blending with reposado. Light whiskey-barrel taste.
    • Reposado: Aged in wood barrels. Sweeter flavor than gold or silver, with hints of baking spice and toast.
    • Añejo and extra añejo: Must be aged from 1-3 years. Taste ranges from smoky brandy to rich and spicy with vanilla notes.
    • Mezcal A clear spirit with smoky aroma. Technically, all tequilas are types of mezcal. Mezcals and tequilas are different because they are each made from certain kinds of agave plants. Tequila comes from blue agave and mezcal from smoked or roasted maguey agave.

    Back To The Beginning

1800 Tequila is a premium line of tequila by the Jose Cuervo brand, the best-selling tequila company owned by the Beckmann family.

It was launched in 1975 and was originally called Cuervo 1800 Tequila. 1800 apparently refers to the year when tequila was first aged in wooden casks.

Its made from 100% blue weber agave. Why does this matter? Because some tequilas can contain up to 49% of other alcohols, and we all know what happens if you mix your alcohols. 1800 is ideal for drinkers who fear the notorious tequila hangover.

The brands agave plants are grown in the Jalisco region of Mexico. The piñas of the plant are selected after the plant has been growing for eight to twelve years and are at their optimum level of sweetness.

The piñas are then harvested and cooked in traditional clay kilns before being crushed to a pulp. The juice is double distilled in copper pot stills, a process that removes impuritiesand any other components that might cause a throbbing head the next morning.

Finally, its blended with a special selection of other white tequilas to create the distinct flavour of 1800 Tequila.

1800 Tequila is sold in a triangular bottle with a top that serves as a shot glass. The unique shape is designed to resemble the ancient Mayan pyramids, a symbol of Mexicos culture and heritage. The logo includes the brand slogan: Trabajo, Passion, Honestidad .

    What Is Gold Tequila

How to Make a Modern Margarita, The Re-Margarita | Patrón Tequila

Despite its color, gold tequila is rarely aged. In fact, you might call gold tequila an impostor, a marketing gimmick even. In many cases, gold tequila is the result of caramel coloring added to agave juices before fermentation to give the spirit a more refined look. Aged tequilas, which are deepers shades of amber and brown, are often costly because of the amount of time they require the metallic hue of gold tequila could imply to the lay purchaser this product is a better option. But if the bottle does not say 100% agave, check the ingredients. Youll likely see caramel coloring and sugar.

That being said, you can buy 100% agave gold tequila. Two different techniques can render a solidly gold spirit: The first, producers can mix cheaper blanco or silver tequila with a more aged tequila, such as reposado, to get the golden hue. Second, they can age the tequila in barrels to let the liquor absorb some color before bottling.

Gold tequila is often used for shots. The smoother, slightly sweet taste is less harsh than fresh tequila. Because of the hint of sweetness, many bartenders will use gold tequila in margaritas to complement the mixed drinks fruity flavors.

    What Is Reposado Tequila

    Sierra Tequila Silver 50cl

Once agave juices are fermented and distilled, they can be bottled right away or poured into barrels for aging. Reposado, which means rested, tequila is aged between 60 days and one year, often in large American, French, or Canadian oak barrels. Some companies will age their spirits in barrels that have been used for other alcohols, like whiskey, wine, or scotch.

Reposado tequila, which typically boasts a brilliant amber hue, absorbs those sweeter spirits, which creates a distinct flavor and color. The aging process mellows the sometimes-harsh, fresh tequila spice but leaves behind plenty of the blue agave flavor. The resulting spirit retains agave funk but has rounder edges and less bite.

    Tequila Sunrise Drink Origin

This drink has a colorful appearance and story behind it. It was created by bartenders Bobby Lozoff and Billy Rice in the 1970s at the Trident bar in Sausalito, California. The drink gained major attention and popularity in 1973 after Jose Cuervo put the recipe on the back of its tequila bottles, the Eagles song Tequila Sunrise was released, and The Rolling Stones ordered it across the country during their tour that same year. It was, indeed, the rock and roll party drink! These events made the cocktail go mainstream and cemented its International Bartender Associations inclusion.

The original Tequila Sunrise was served in the 1930s, which consisted of crème de cassis , lime juice, and soda water. It was sparkling and light, with a dark purplish hue nothing like the popular version today that includes orange juice and grenadine. I guess it didnt have any rock and roll bands to help promote it. HA!

    Tequila Reserva 1800 Silver Review:

This is a superbly smooth Tequila that produces a wonderfully neat and clean flavour profile. The agave used for 1800 is Mexican, bearing the blue agave varietal. It is a dry Tequila, and the delicate, lemony notes have a long, lingering finish.

The colour has been manipulated beautifully by the inclusion of the burnt oak colouring elements, which, along with the copper and gold flakes that is used, adds an extra depth and richness to this drink.

1800 Red is a lighter, more delicate version of this popular Tequila. Again, the finish is long and satisfying, with that sipping quality that characterises a good Tequila.

The 1800 Anejo Tequila is a smooth, medium-bodied and very easy to drink Tequila. Its distinctive, dry flavour profile has a warm undercurrent of aniseed oil, with sweet yet peaty notes emerging towards the end of its long finish.

This Tequila is made with 100% blue agave, and aged over a period of at least one year in oak barrels. It has a light, copper colour, and the smell is slightly sweet, yet is carefully balanced with the oak and spice aromas that travel from the bottle.

It is very easy to drink and will creep down with immense smoothness. A really easy-going and pleasant Tequila.

Eleven Basic Terms Tequila Mixers Should Know

Mexicos favorite spirit has been getting more and more popular, with tequila sales soaring across the country. It is well known as a great liquor to take shots with some salt and a lime wedge. Tequila mixers have become increasingly used as a favorite base spirit for many cocktail beverages. Here we will go over some tequila terms to get you on your way to becoming a master of what to mix with tequila in no time.

    1. Tequila

First off, lets start with the foundation for any excellent tequila drink, and thats tequila itself. Tequila is a spirit that is a specific type of mescal. It is made from the blue agave plant and most prominently produced in areas around the city of Tequila, northwest of Guadalajara.

    2. Mezcal

Mezcal is commonly confused with tequila, but there is a difference. Tequila is always a type of mezcal. Mezcal is not a type of tequila. For example, just like scotch and bourbon are a type of whiskey, tequila is a type of mezcal. Mezcal, by definition, is any agave-based liquor. Where tequila is the blue agave version of mezcal, distillers make mezcal from more than 30 different agave varieties. Mezcal predates tequila by nearly 300 years, as modern tequila didnt come about until the 1800s. Mezcal dates back to the 1500s when brandy-obsessed conquistadors first made it.

    3. Agave

    4. Jalisco

    5. Mixto

    6. Normas Oficial Mexicana

    7. Joven

    8. Blanco

    9. Reposado

    10. Añejo

    11. Extra Añejo
