Jack Daniels Is A Southern Standby

Jack Daniels is pretty much a standby whiskey in the South. You might find expensive bourbon and imported single malt scotch in a Southern pantry but it will almost always be sitting next to a bottle of Jack Daniels.

We don’t do Bourbon and Coke here so much as we do Jack and Coke. There are no less than 10 country songs about Jack Daniels, my favorite being Jack Daniels, You Lied to Me Again by Ray Stevens.

There are probably more than 10 but that’s all I could think of right off hand.

So you see, Jack Daniels is pretty much a Southern icon — like screen doors, sweet tea, and Sunday supper.

Now, being a food writer I have an entire shelf of my pantry dedicated to booze. Sometimes companies send it to me as part of a recipe they want me to develop, sometimes clients gift me with it when they are especially happy with my work, and sometimes I buy it for a particular recipe I want to work on.

This was one of those times when I paid for it myself to work on this cocktail… and it took a lot of testing. A lot.

The Two Ways To Go About A Peach Whiskey Sour

So there are really two routes you can go with making this drink. One is extremely easy and straightforward perfect for beginners, and produces a perfectly enjoyable drink.

The other route you can go is to really make this a craft style cocktail. This way of creating your sipper is a little bit more involved, but still not too difficult at all. Really, the only involved step is for you to make your own homemade peach simple syrup which isnt hard but just adds a little bit of prep time.

About Bourbon: One Of My Favorite Spirits

Peach Flavored Whiskey Bird Dog Whiskey

You mightve noticed by now that theres a fair amount of bourbon on Striped Spatula. I love adding the rich, warm flavor of bourbon to my recipes, whether its a cocktail, sweet potato pie, barbecue sauce, or a glaze for bacon-wrapped shrimp.

In terms of flavor, bourbon whiskey is generally sweeter and milder than rye. This is a result of the high corn content in bourbons characteristic grain.

Rye whiskey is spicier and drier, and can stand up to more assertive flavor pairings than bourbon. That said, depending on the proportions in the grain used to make bourbon, there are certainly those on the market that lean toward the more robust side.

When I cook, I most often use Makers Mark. Lately, Buffalo Trace and Knob Creek have been my all-purpose bourbons of choice for cocktail-making. I reach for the latter when I want a sip thats just a bit spicier.

Of course, finding an excellent a small-barrel craft bourbon during your travels, such as Wiggly Bridge, is a real treat. Its so fun to be able to meet the distillers and see where they produce their spirits. Theyre special bottles to add to your bar cart or bourbon collection.

Which Type Of Tea Makes The Best Iced Tea

The iced tea can transform this drink into an entirely different experience every time. Begin with your favorite tea blend for iced tea, then play with it to bring in various flavor profiles. Black teas are a good universal place to begin, offering that classic iced tea taste. Green teas have more of a vegetal profile, while herbal teas create a lighter foundation with a floral aspect.

    Peach Juice And Whiskey

This fruity, spicy, and refreshing combination is ideal for a warm summer afternoon. The sweetness of the peach is balanced by the oak and malty flavors of the whiskey.

You can make peach juice and whiskey using the same formula as apple cider and whiskey. You can also enjoy peach juice and whiskey by making a Bourbon Peach Smash:

Jim Beam Peach Cocktail Recipe Contest | Whiskey Bourbon Summer

A classic whiskey sour is made with whiskey, lemon juice, sugar and egg white. When shaken the egg white becomes very frothy and leaves a foamy head on the cocktail.

Whiskey sours are typically made with bourbon, which tends to be sweeter than scotch whiskey.

However, this isnt a sweet, girly-drink. As the name suggests, its a sour drink at heart. This rendition which uses an infused peach simple syrup doesnt overpower the lemon, but rather adds a softer dimension to the bourbon sour.

Traditional whiskey sours are an elegant libation, usually served strained in a stemmed coupe glass with an artful garnish for presentation and flair. This whiskey sour recipe skips the egg white and stemmed glassware for less frou-frou and show and more easy sipping.

What If I Dont Have Fresh Peaches

Thats ok! I love making this drink in the spring and summer when we are in peak peach season in North Carolina, because in my opinion, there is nothing more delicious than a juicy ripe peach.

However, sometimes we just cant make fresh peaches work and so I have two substitution ideas for you if you cant get your hands on fresh peaches or the ones at the store or farmers market arent up to your standards.

You can also use canned peach slices or diced peaches or peach jam. If you are going to pick either of these options, I would definitely make a peach simple syrup and would not muddle the fruit or peach jam in a cocktail shaker because it would have a totally different and much sweeter than fresh peaches.

There are five excellent whiskey mixers that arent ginger ale.

  • Lemonade. Lemonade, which is sweet and tart, is one of the most refreshing drinks you can have in the summer.
  • Soda Club. While Whiskey Gingers are delicious, the sweet soda frequently masks the subtle tastes of more complex whiskies.
  • Vermouth is a sweet spirit.

Review: Old Camp Peach Pecan Whiskey

    Chefs

Sweet and lowdown, you got it: Old Camp is a whiskey from a country duo called Florida Georgia Line. Ive never heard of em, but once you set foot in the spirits world, eventually we were bound to cross paths.

Essentially a novelty spirit, Old Camp is mystery whiskey thats heavily doctored with peach and pecan flavors.

How heavy? Peach candy and candied nuts are really all you can catch on the nose, overpowering like sticking your face in a tub of some kind of super-Southern ice cream. On the palate, an overwhelming sweetness hits you right in the face, all peaches in syrup, maple, brown sugar, and flamed bananas. It takes quite awhile for the initial rush of sugar to fade, and after a minute or so the more savory pecan character finally shows its face. This is actually the most engaging part of the spirit, a comforting and authentic hint of roasted nuts that goes a long way toward redeeming the sugar bomb thats come before.

Think of Old Camp as an upscale Southern Comfort, and consider using it the same way: Very sparingly.

    70 proof.

How I Brainstorm New Cocktail Ideas

When I go to create a new cocktail, I always start with the highlight ingredient and choose the liquor that I’d like to try to mix it with. I do a light test with a bit of the liquor and a bit of the ingredient to make sure that they’re a match.

Then I build from there. Does it need an aromatic element ? Maybe some bubbles? And more than likely, a little ice?

    And that’s about it!

So this Basil Peach Whiskey Cocktail started from a few juicy peaches. And I knew I wanted to create a whiskey cocktail. I personally like Rye Whiskey, but peach and whiskey or bourbon are a match made in heaven, so use whatever you like or have around!

Then, I’d been pairing peach with thyme and basil all week long while I was playing around with new recipe ideas in the kitchen. At first I tried this cocktail with thyme, but it just wasn’t punchy enough. The next night, I gave it a shot with a few sprigs of basil and bam! Late summer in a glass.
