The Best Rum Punch Recipe
Id never had or made rum punch until a trip to Las Vegas a few years ago. I love rum in cocktails, but Id never had this!
When I was in Las Vegas I ate at Voodoo Steak at The Rio. Did you know I got engaged at The Rio almost exactly 18 years before I had dinner there? Crazy!
The signature cocktail at Voodoo Steak is The Witch Doctor, a ginormous glass filled with 4 kinds of rum, pineapple, and grenadine with a dry-ice spectacular finish. It smokes and steams and bubblesand it really is voodoo because, well, 4 kinds of rum. Also: it serves at least 3 people and doesnt taste like there is any alcohol in it at all.
In other words: its dangerous.
I knew I had to re-create The Witch Doctor at homebut in a simpler way. I made you a rum punch cocktail for oneor you can make an actual punch for a party.

About Rum Punch A Little History
So I really love to dance Zumba and SocaFit, and many of my classmates and teachers are from the Caribbean islands.
Every party we have, someone brings their version of rum punch. And there are thousands of versions. When I decided to make my own version, I wanted to know more about the history of rum punch.
Basically, when the English were sailing around the world being jerks as part of the British East India Company, they drank a lot of beer on the ships.
Like 11 pints a day per person. And, they were on the ships for a long time.

Towards the end of their trips, the beer was rancid and flat. On the return home, they needed a new alcoholic beverage to drink- so they used what they found at their destination.
In the East Indies and the Caribbean, those ingredients were rum, fruit, and spices. a mix was made for the journey home, and rum punch was born.
Today rum drinks are a popular part of mainstream culture throughout the Caribbean islands, and there are as many rum punch recipes as there are families.

What Is Rum Punch
I recently did a little research on the origin of rum punch. Apparently, the word punch comes from a Sanskrit word that means five, as the drinks were originally made with five ingredients alcohol, sugar, lemon juice, water, and tea or spices.
The drink eventually made its way from England to the West Indies where it took on the more tropical notes that we know today. Native island fruits lent themselves perfectly to rum punch their natural sweetness has always been a perfect match for most kinds of rum.
When it comes to making rum punch, keep this rhyme in mind: One of Sour, Two of Sweet, Three of Strong, Four of Weak. This means punch is made with: one part lime juice, two parts sweetener, three parts rum, and four parts water.
Lime Juice With A Slice Of Lemon
If you want to shake things up a bit, adding lime juice, mint and sugar to rum will definitely help you achieve this. Put the lime juice, mint and sugar all into a cocktail shaker and pound together until roughly crushed. Its at this point you should add in about 180ml of light rum to the shaker and shake well until fully combined. Strain the mixture into a glass and finish it off with 2 lime wedges and 2 mint leaves. The mojito originated in Cuba, possibly derived from a 16th-century medicinal tonic known as El Draque . It’s said that in the 1800s, Africans who had been enslaved and working in Cuba’s sugarcane fields commonly took a similar elixir. As it advanced from tonic to beverage, the mint, lime, and sugar masked the taste of cheap rum. Havana lays claim to inventing the cocktail as it’s known today with the introduction of ice and soda. This is one of my favorite rums. This stuff is fantastic on its own, let alone blended into a Pina Colada. Plantation 3 Stars rum is steeped with pineapple rinds for one week before being pot distilled.
For three months, the fruit is steeped separately in Plantation Original Dark Rum. After blending the two liquids, the Pineapple Rum rests in casks for three months before being bottled.
