  • Don Julio Debuts As A Brand

After several decades of running the Tres Magueyes label, the Don Julio brand was born in 1987. This label began selling González’s family reserve bottles, which quickly became some of the very best offered on the market. The brand was acquired by Diageo in 2015, three years after Don Julio González’s death, but everything from the traditional production techniques to the new limited-edition offerings all pay homage to this revolutionary man.

Don Julio 1942 is one of several bottles that commemorates his incredible legacy that still impacts the industry greatly today through production methods, richness of flavor, and the gorgeous shape that makes it a bar cart must-have. As Christina Choi, senior vice president of Tequila, Diageo North America, said, “Don Julio didn’t set out on his tequila making journey for fame or money, but rather he was devoted to crafting the highest quality tequila to enjoy with friends and family.”

Behind The Liquid: Q& A With Don Julio Brand Ambassador

Don Julio tequila is a spirit that is steeped in tradition, dating all the way back to 1942, when Julio González purchased his first distillery. We step back in time and unveil the story behind the brand with European Brand Ambassador, Deano Moncrieffe.

    1. Can you tell us more about the history and origin of Don Julio tequila?

Don Julio Gonzalez Estrada was born in 1925. He was raised in the Los Altos highlands region of Mexicoin Atotonilco el Alto. Julio González spent his youth learning the ancient methods of making mezcal wine in underground ovens, developing an understanding and appreciation for the subtle flavour nuances resulting from experimentation. As the years went on, he began to recognise the many ways in which the regions unique conditions allowed for the cultivation of the best agave, and so he decided to begin growing his own. In 1942, at just 17 years of age, Julio González purchased his first distillery, naming it La Primavera, or spring. This would be the initial step on his journey to creating the iconic Don Julio brand, the worlds first luxury tequila.

    2. Can you tell us more about the production process of Don Julio and the ingredients you use?

Tequila Don Julio hand cuts piñas into thirds or quarters for uniform cooking, whereas other distilleries do not cut the piñas or only cut them in half. The piñas are then slowly steam cooked in traditional masonry ovens for three days.

    3. What makes Don Julio different to other tequilas?

    Sergeant Pepper

    What About The Worm

Remember the worm we talked about in the opening section? As it turns out, worms have nothing to do with tequila. The worm in the bottle trick is often used by mezcal producers as a gimmick of sorts to draw attention to their product. In fact, the law says that tequila may not contain a worm or scorpion.

If a bottle is con gusano , then it is likely a mezcal and not a very good one at that. The worm is actually the larva of a moth that infests agave plants. An infested plant is the sign of a bad agave product. Proceed with caution.

Don Julios Bestdon Julio 1942 And Don Julio Real

While each of Don Julios tequilas is something special, experts agree that two stand out above the others in this fine collection:

    • Don Julio 1942. Crafted as an homage to Don Julio himself, this añejo is aged 2 ½ years in bourbon oak barrels. Then, its distilled a second time in a stainless-steel pot still, producing a rich, sweet tequila. Tasters note that 1942 has a full, creamy palate with hints of caramel and spice and a long, spicy finish.
    • Don Julio Real. The crown jewel of the Don Julio selection. This tequila is worth the purchase based on the crystal and silver leaf decanter alone. However, the real treasure is found inside, with one of the worlds first extra-añejo tequilas, aged 3 to 5 years in American oak barrels. With tasting notes of coffee, vanilla, and wood, this supremely smooth tequila is one of the best in the world to sip neat.

    Don Julio Tequila Price List

    Type

    $58.99 $59.99

There are lots of facets to the success of Don Julio, and to list all of them would make this price guide tedious and boring. But one cannot exclude the companys añejo and reposado aging processes when listing what makes Don Julio great. For example, the reposados spend eight months in old American oak barrels primarily used for Kentucky bourbon aging. Select reposado sare aged for one more month in old Scotch whisky casks for the Don Julio Reposado Double Cask variant.

As for the añejos, their aging goes for a full 18 months in the companys own reposado barrels. The result is more agave and less oak in the flavor, which is great for the tequila purist.

    Don Julio Blanco Tequila

    • Alternate Money Check $79.99-$89.99, 1,500 ml, 40%

Light and crisp is the consistent description of this blancos taste, with a citrus hint greeting you at tongues tip. Then the sweet agave takes over, getting creamy as the liquid goes down the gullet. Theres a tiny burn at the end, but its more respectable than rude and you dont forget the entire run of the drink through your mouth. Its best served as a foundation for a mixed drink, such as a margarita or a 21st Century.

    Don Julio Reposado Tequila

    • $45.99-$46.99, 750 ml, 38%

Agave and vanilla are very much present at the start of the taste, followed by dints of wood, smoke and cinnamon. Everything goes smooth and silky in the lips-to-mouth-to-throat transition, with a very gentle agave/peppery reminder at the end.

A Liquor.com reviewer advises serving it in a Glencairn glass, which is a squat, tapered glass typically used for tasting whisky. Its wide body and narrower mouth allow the drinker to savor the aromas of the spirit, which also enhances the taste. This añejo tequila is aged up to 32 months in recharged American white oak ex bourbon barrels but is said to be at least two-and-a-half years old – just 6 months short of qualifying to be termed an extra añejo. It is distilled in pot still No.6, a small still filling just 3 barrels per distillation.

1942 commemorates the year that the eponymous late Don Julio González started making tequila and it was launched in 2002 to commemorate the 60 anniversary. It is presented in an elongated amber bottle shaped to resemble an agave leaf. The present bottle and gift box was released in 2010, the original had lighter and greener coloured glass and was slightly more squat with a black and white photograph of Don Julio himself gracing the top of an agave-shaped leaf label. The old bottle was good but the new, sleeker more elegant bottle is even more impressive.
