1. Can you tell us more about the history and origin of Don Julio tequila?
Don Julio Gonzalez Estrada was born in 1925. He was raised in the Los Altos highlands region of Mexicoin Atotonilco el Alto. Julio González spent his youth learning the ancient methods of making mezcal wine in underground ovens, developing an understanding and appreciation for the subtle flavour nuances resulting from experimentation. As the years went on, he began to recognise the many ways in which the regions unique conditions allowed for the cultivation of the best agave, and so he decided to begin growing his own. In 1942, at just 17 years of age, Julio González purchased his first distillery, naming it La Primavera, or spring. This would be the initial step on his journey to creating the iconic Don Julio brand, the worlds first luxury tequila.

Tequila Don Julio hand cuts piñas into thirds or quarters for uniform cooking, whereas other distilleries do not cut the piñas or only cut them in half. The piñas are then slowly steam cooked in traditional masonry ovens for three days.

What About The Worm
Remember the worm we talked about in the opening section? As it turns out, worms have nothing to do with tequila. The worm in the bottle trick is often used by mezcal producers as a gimmick of sorts to draw attention to their product. In fact, the law says that tequila may not contain a worm or scorpion.

1942 commemorates the year that the eponymous late Don Julio González started making tequila and it was launched in 2002 to commemorate the 60 anniversary. It is presented in an elongated amber bottle shaped to resemble an agave leaf. The present bottle and gift box was released in 2010, the original had lighter and greener coloured glass and was slightly more squat with a black and white photograph of Don Julio himself gracing the top of an agave-shaped leaf label.
