How Does This Not Have Any Carbs Again
Ketel One Botanical has 73 caloriesbut not carbs, protein, or fat. If youve ever paid attention to how food works, this might be confusing. And while carbs are not the devil, they are very trendy to avoid. If thats the case for you, might we suggest these low-carb Chocolate Peanut Butter Keto Fat Bombs?
Denis Faye, nutrition expert and Nutrition Nerd explains where the calories in vodka come from. There are four things that have calories: carbs, protein, fat, and alcohol. I hesitate to refer to alcohol as a macronutrient but that is what it is. Faye explains that gram of alcohol has 7 calories, which is where the Botanicals get their calories, since they have negligible amount of everything else.
But beer has carbs. So does wine. What gives? Faye continues, Think of all the volume in beer. In a way, beer is like an alcohol recipe. Theres more stuff leftover when you process it. Think: barley, yeast, and hops . When youre making spirits, youre distilling everything way down.
So, essentially, theyve distilled the Botanicals to the point where all the fat, protein, and carbs have been almost entirely removed from the spirit and what youre left with is the alcohol. And flavor. A.k.a., all the good stuff.

Vodka Calories Are Low
When compared to drinks like wine or beer, vodka is definitely better as it has one of the lowest calories among all alcoholic beverages. However, it is important to remember that the higher the proof of the vodka, the more calories it contains.
Alcohol proof is a measurement used to measure the content of spirit in an alcoholic beverage. The higher the concentration of your vodka, the more calories it will contain. 100 proof will have about 50% of alcohol content, whereas 80 proof will have 40% alcohol content.
Below is a table with a proof-wise calorie content of different concentrations of vodka calories:
Vodka does not contain any sugar and is just made up of spirit and water and has very little nutritional value. The calories that the drink contains comes from alcohol. It is best suited for people who are looking to lose weight as a few shots of plain vodka is as potent as a few glasses of Beer or Wine, making you indirectly consume fewer calories while giving you a good buzz.

At the top of the competition, there is Absolut which costs around $65 per liter followed by Belvedere and Grey Goose which are around $45 and $35 per 750 ml respectively. However, many vodka drinkers find these top-tier prices ridiculous since they dont necessarily taste twice as good.
Svedkas edge against its mid-range competitors is its 5 cycles of distillation which ensures its purity that brings out a crisp finish.

Svedka Flavors Ranked Worst To Best
Thinking about vodka might conjure images of Russia in your head, but Sweden has a centuries-long history of vodka distilling, too. Absolut was the first Swedish spirit to make waves internationally, but Svedka has quickly gained in popularity since it was introduced in 1998. Constellation Brands, one of the largest liquor companies in the world, bought the brand in 2007, bringing it to an even wider audience. According to CrunchBase, Svedka is the second highest selling imported vodka in the United States, making it the 7th-most popular liquor overall.
Much like its Swedish rival, Svedka has differentiated itself from other vodkas on the market with stylish, distinctive ads and an eye-catching bottle design. Svedka positions its product as an affordable luxury, combining a sophisticated image with cheap prices. But what about the product inside the bottle? Svedka used to be made out of Swedish winter wheat, but now the companys website says its distilled from American corn. The number of distillations has also been reduced, from five times to four, which is still more than some mass-market vodkas.
Despite these changes, Svedka still holds its own compared to other mid-priced vodkas. The original 80 proof is a solid mixer, and some of the flavored versions are quite tasty. Not all Svedka releases are created equal, however. Heres every flavor of Svedka, ranked worst to first.

New Uses For Vodka Around The Home
âThe nice thing about the new Botanical vodka is that even though it is flavored, there is no added sugar, and because it has some flavor already, it may dissuade people from making a mixed drink which is where the extra calories come in,â Abbey Sharp, a Toronto-based RD and author of âAbbeyâs Kitchen,â told TODAY Food.
âThe real question is whether you want flavored vodka or not,â she added. âI dont see one as necessarily being âhealthierâ than the other, but rather, it really comes down to preference.â
As for how it stacks up to wine, a 5-ounce pour of white table wine has about 121 calories, according to the USDA nutrient database thatâs 40 percent more calories than a 1.5-ounce serving of the new Botanical vodka. A serving of wine also has about 3.8 grams of carbs but no fat.
Sipping wise, a 1.5-ounce shot doesnât last as long as a 5-ounce glass of wine, of course. Ketel One recommends adding 3 ounces of zero calorie sparkling water to 1.5 ounces of the spirit, in an ice-filled glass, and then topping it off with a piece of fresh fruit or herb as a garnish.
While Ketelâs flavors have unique floral elements, this isnât the first diet liquor line to come along SkinnyGirl, started by âReal Housewives of New Yorkâ star Bethenny Frankel, also has naturally flavored vodkas, which clock in at 75 calories per 1.5 ounces, and come in flavors like cherry and tangerine.

What Is Vodka Made From
Vodka is made from alcohol created by fermenting high starch or high sugar plant matter with yeast. The type of plant matter used varies from brand to brand. Vodka is traditionally made from grain, with rye being the most common. However, wheat, corn, and potatoes are also used fairly often.
Vodka can also be made from fruit, like grapes or sugar cane, or even milk whey. However, grains and potatoes are much more common, as they have a much more neutral flavor profile than sugar or fruit-based vodka. Neutrality is usually desirable when it comes to vodka, as thats what makes it so versatile.
The strain of yeast used to convert the sugar molecules into alcohol is also a key ingredient. The type of yeast varies from brand to brand and is usually a closely guarded secret. If the plant matter used as the base is extremely starchy, enzymes are often added to help convert the starch to sugar, so the yeast can eat it. This creates the raw alcohol, which is then distilled, diluted, and filtered to make vodka.

Svedka was proudly created using Swedish wheat and barley harvested from farms like this one. However, most properties of the initial starch source inside this example, Swedish winter rye are lost following distillation.

The Enduring Appeal Of Pink Wine
Unless youve been hiding under a very large boulder since 2014, then youre well aware that rosé wine has made a name for itself as the it Millennial drink and the official summer water. True, rosé wine has been around basically forever from the Roman and Greek Empires, to the saccharine white zinfandel your Great Aunt Shirly glugged at tupperware parties in the 1970s . But in the past few years, rosé got its second wind and came into its own as a drink thats well-known and well-loved by virtually everyone.
Thanks to improved production methods and affordable options becoming widely available, plus celebrities glamorizing pink wine on social media, rosé became more than just the fastest growing wine category it became a way of life. The allure of what rosé represents the European coast, summer, and sunshine coupled with it being easy to drink, has led to brilliant marketing campaigns, smart packaging, and this attainable rosé lifestyle being sold to consumers, says Matt Landes, founder of Cocktail Academy.
Rosé has the power to make us regular folks sipping wine by an inflatable pool in the burbs feel like were living the dream on a swan float in Southampton. With such industry success, of course other brands are jumping on board. Larger companies are seeking to capitalize on rosés existing fandom and apply the rosé all day mentality to nighttime, says Landes.

Whatever you buy, just be careful not to get caught up in too many buzzwords, said Sharp. Terms like ânon-GMOâ or âno artificial sweeteners/flavorsâ are really âan attempt to reach out to consumers that are health conscious,â said the nutritionist, noting that these labels âwill not necessarily help you lose weight if that is your primary goal.â
Ketel One Botanicals retail for $25 per bottle and are rolling out nationwide in early May.
Sharp said that, overall, if youâre looking to lose weight, drinking in moderation is key no matter what type of liquor you choose and advised that people stick to one or two drinks a day. âAll alcohol should be seen as a âtreatâ that should be enjoyed in moderation,â she said, âso you might as well choose the treat youre most likely to enjoy.â

Do Flavored Vodkas Have More Sugar
This means that flavored vodka can have sugar added, and there is no upper limit to that sugar as long as there is still at least 30% alcohol in the bottle. Particularly for the vanilla/cake frosting/whipped cream type of sweet flavors, a lot of sugar is added to flavored vodka. Not all brands do this, but many do.
Can You Leave Vodka In A Hot Car
Alcohol prevents the growth of harmful microorganisms in the liquid, thus preventing it from becoming spoiled. Both opened and unopened vodka can last indefinitely. Unfortunately, heat can start to evaporate the alcohol content in your vodka , shortening its shelf life and negatively affecting its flavor.

How Does The Body Respond To Alcohol
When alcohol enters the body, it takes precedence the liver metabolizes it before fats and sugars.
This causes fatty acids, the basic components of fats, to build up. The body often stores them for later use.
Because alcohol is metabolized first, the body burns calories from alcohol before it burns those from fats. This process is called fat sparring.
The liver also stores glucose, in the form of glycogen, as a backup energy source. However, the liver breaks down alcohol before it provides glucose to the body, which often results in low blood sugar. This makes drinking alcohol particularly dangerous for people with diabetes.
