In most countries, food and beverages must contain fewer than 20 ppm of gluten to be considered gluten-free .

Most conventionally brewed beer contains far more than 20 ppm of gluten, though the exact amount varies depending on the brewing process and ingredients used.

Additionally, some breweries are dedicated gluten-free facilities to help avoid cross-contamination with gluten during the brewing process.

Is Light Beer Gluten

One of the common myths that Ive heard from bartenders is that all light beers are gluten-free. Sadly, this is not the case, as I mentioned in my last post on whether or not Bud Light is gluten-free.

Although light beers typically have less gluten than a stronger, full-bodied beer , they often have more than 20 ppm of gluten.

You might be able to get away with drinking one or two low-gluten light beers, but if you have a strong sensitivity to gluten, then I recommend sticking to a 100% gluten-free beer.

Mixed Drinks And Liqueurs

Liqueurs such as amaretto, brandy, Cointreau, Grand Marnier, Kahlúa, and schnapps are made from distilled alcohol to which sugar or other flavorings have been added.

This means that, in general, liqueurs are considered gluten-free. However, just as with cider, not all their ingredients are free of gluten.

The same can be said of mixed drinks, which contain a combination of distilled spirits, liqueurs, and drink mixes.

Its always best to check labels to ensure that no gluten-containing ingredients have been added. When in doubt, stick to simple gluten-free mixed drinks, such as a gin and tonic or a martini made with potato-based vodka.

These days, you can get just about anything gluten-free, from cereal to jelly beans. And while the food industry was quick to adapt to the gluten-free trend, which brought more options to those with celiac disease, its taken years for the beer industry to catch up.

I have had so many conversations over the past years about the seriousness of celiac disease with distributors around the country, says Mark Ewald, owner of Vermont Beer Shepherd. Many initial reactions are that the gluten-free crowd is really just a lifestyle choice. I then get to explain the seriousness of celiac disease and the dangers that come from drinking a product that is either enzymatically altered or the gluten is removed. These altered and gluten-removed beers are still not safe for a true celiac.

Most beer drinkers wont notice a difference between gluten-full and gluten-free beer these daysthe industry has come a long way over the years, says Lindsi Kay, founder BestGlutenFreeBeers.com. “It can be tricky learning how to work with gluten-free malts, but once a brewer cracks that code it really allows them to color outside the barley lines and experiment with a diverse variety of flavors and textures.

How Beer Is Brewed Today

Conventionally beer is brewed by using the following ingredients: grains , hops and yeast. First malting occurs by heating up the grains so they are dry and crack open. Then during the process of mashing, hot water is added to help release the sugar from the grains. After the water has been drained off, the liquid is boiled at the same time as the hops and spices are combined to balance out the flavour. Yeast is then added before the mixture is left to ferment and turn into alcohol. Beer is the by-product of the yeast using up the sugar in the wort. All beers are brewed following a similar process.

But What About Gluten

Now were talking! When I do indulge in a beer, I like to choose the tastiest options that still coincide with my diet, so lets discuss the different types of beers that may even be considered healthy. Craft beer continues to be overwhelmingly popular, with local breweries throughout the country that offer an array of styles, from gluten-free beer to vegan beer. To have you navigate the many options on the market, heres an explanation of the healthiest beers out there:

Gluten-Free Beer

Brewers have begun using gluten-free bases in their beer, such as rice, millet, buckwheat and sorghum, instead of the commonly used ingredients barley and wheat. Technically, if a brewer uses ingredients containing gluten in his batches, like barley and rye, he can reduce the level of gluten to below 20 parts per million and still label it as a gluten-free beer.

The standards vary from country to country, with some beers containing very low levels of gluten that they are perceived to be safe for people with gluten allergies and intolerances. Brewers who produce low gluten beers are required to test every batch of beer for gluten to make sure they are within the regulations.

Hard ciders are also almost always gluten-free, as they are made with a variety of apples, pears and other fruits, instead of ingredients that contain gluten. Check the labels on ciders because some brewers add barley for enzymes and flavor.
