What Is The Best Whiskey To Drink

George Dickel Barrel Select

The Best Way to Drink Whiskey

George Dickel is the second-largest Tennessee whiskey distillery, but its far less well-known that the largest, Jack Daniels. However, George Dickel is often considered superior in quality, and this Barrel Select is the brands finest bottle. Its first steeped in charcoal, mellowing the bite, and then aged 10 to 12 years. Finally, ten barrels are hand-selected by George Dickels Master Distiller, John Lunn.

The award-winning flavor is marked by caramel and corn with hints of vanilla, oak, clove and rye. These fade slowly, leaving a satisfying finish of caramel, cinnamon and vanilla. Its a premium bourbon, so its best enjoyed neat with a drop of water, but also works for making upgraded bourbon cocktails.

Dr Pepper Or Cherry Coca

I have decided to add both of these to the same section because, in my experience, Dr pepper and cherry coke can taste very similar.

Im not recommending these as a substitute for Coca-Cola or Pepsi in fact, these two mixers make for great mixers on their own.

If you want to try something new and you want to add different flavors to a whiskey drink, I highly recommend trying the Dr pepper or Cherry Coca-Cola mixers at least once.

Not only will these two drinks add a different dynamic in terms of flavor, but they will also hide the harsh undertones of certain whiskeys.

To my nose, the greatest Scotch whiskies have an integration of balance and complexity, with expectations always exceeded on taste.

We couldnt agree more. So, without further ado, here are the best Scotch whiskies that will spark up your taste buds, put a fire in your belly, and just plain knock your socks off.

Compass Great King Street Artists Blend

This whisky is actually a blend, which is unusual on any best-of-the-best list. However, the distillers of the Compass Box Great King Street Artists blend knew what they were doing with this belter.

The blend contains a higher ratio of single malt to grain, which gives the consumer the opportunity to enjoy its well-rounded complexity as a straight drink. It has undertones that mimick a fruity dessert, where flavors of vanilla, spices, and baked apple make up a beautiful, indulgent emulsion.

Again, you wont have to break the bank! You can pick up a bottle to the Compass Box for around $65.00.

What Is The Smoothest Scotch Whisky Single Malt Or Blended

Any whisky critic will tell you that a single malt whisky has a reputation for being a higher quality than blends or other styles of whisky. Single malt Scotch whiskies tend to be smoother than blends because of the pride taken in their craftsmanship.

The flavor and balance of single malt Scotch whisky is also easier for distillers to control from one single malt. Famous distillers will often have single malt Scotches at their flagship whisky one that speaks to the skill and professionalism executed by the distillers in their process.

There are, however, loads of blends out there are equally as smooth as single malts. Our favorite example of a top of the range blend is Dewars Double Double 32 Year Old. Blends are often a result of great creativity to achieve incredibly smooth textures. They are quickly becoming more popular among whisky experts.

In short, single malt Scotch is not necessarily your overall answer to the burning question, what is the smoothest Scotch whisky? A well blended Scotch will offer you just as great a smooth-drinking experience.

    Michters Toasted Barrel Finish Rye

A post shared by Scott and Bart on Nov 10, 2017 at 8:29pm PST

Josh Saphier, bartender at Eighteen36 in Houston

I love the Michters Rye Toasted Barrel Finish. This rye is especially spicy and barrel proof . The toasted finish process which is charring the barrel a little extra adds a unique flavor. I get more butter popcorn and it has a distinguishing viscosity.

    How To Drink Japanese Whisky

You can drink Japanese whisky however you like, just as would you any Scotch, Irish whiskey, bourbon or rye. How you decide to enjoy it will depend on whether you prefer mixed drinks or neat spirits.

Most inexpensive blended Japanese whiskies are delicious in mixed drinks. A cocktail known as a Whisky Highball, a blend of whisky, ice and soda, is a popular way of serving it in Japan.

If you invest in a pricey bottle or a rare single malt, you may find the best to appreciate its complex character is to drink it neat. Saying that, it can be a good idea to add just a small splash of water to the whisky. This helps to release the spirits aromas and flavours, making it even more delicious.

    Nikka Days Blended Whisky

    • Nikka Days Blended Whisky, £37.99 for 70cl from Amazon – buy here

A lot of Japanese-bottled whiskies go for a rather serious, old-school brand look. So thats one way Nikka Days wins points with me. This bottle of this blended whisky is as fun, fresh and bright as the liquid inside.

As with some other whiskies here, Nikka Days is not technically a fully Japanese whisky. But that doesnt mean its not worth drinking. It has a generously fruity, sweet citrus nose mingled in with notes of malt, honey, vanilla and fudge.

And is it ever smooth to drink! That rounded sweetness and barely perceptible alcoholic heat means it slips right down. Just whats needed if youre only beginning your whisky-drinking journey and are looking for a tipple youll enjoy any way its served.

The Balvenie Double Wood 12 Year

Josh Streetman, bartender at Motor Supply Co. in Columbia, South Carolina

Here I think Scotch. Scotch goes in a ton of flavor directions from smoky to peaty to light and almost citrus. As a middle of the road crowd pleaser or an introductory pour, I recommend The Balvenie. Its a Highland Scotch that hits all the areas of flavor on the palate and always finishes smooth. Try the Double Wood 12 year as a starter but when youre hooked on it move on to the 21-year port finish. Best in the game. If you like peat and smoke and an acrimonious but in a good way feel, then Laphroaig is the way to go. Cairdeas or Triple Wood right out of an ice-cold cooler is my jam.

Best Canadian Whisky: Crown Royal Noble Collection Rye Aged 16 Years

While age statements neither equate to nor guarantee quality, its worth stating how remarkable it is that this 16-year-old release carries an average price of just $76. Though admittedly still not cheap, the extensive time in barrel has produced a dazzling array of aromas and flavors, ranging from kettle corn and violets to sweet pepper spice and toasted oak. Average price: $76.

What Are The Different Kinds Of Whiskey

Before trying a new bottle of whiskey, its important to remember the core varieties. Below are eight of the most important types of whiskey to be familiar with.

Bourbon: Bourbon is the go-to for many whiskey drinkers because it has a sweet, smokey flavor thats easy to sip on its own or mixed in an old fashioned. Sometimes called American whiskey, bourbon is corn-based , aged in a charred oak barrel and 80 proof or higher.

Tennessee: Tennessee whiskey is technically bourbon, but Tennessee whiskey distillers might not agree with that. This is because Tennessee whiskey must be produced in the state using a charcoal steeping process called the Lincoln County Process before aging. This mellows the whiskey, creating a smoother taste.

Rye: Rye whiskey is pretty self-explanatory: it must be made primarily from rye. The American whiskey uses the same aging process as bourbon in charred oak barrels. It also yields a spicy flavor that makes it the whiskey of choice for certain cocktails such as Manhattans.

Irish Whiskey: The Eire and Northern Ireland produce Irish whiskey using yeast-fermented grain mash or a mash of malted cereals. The aging process in Ireland takes about three years in wooden casks and produces a very smooth liquor.

Scotch Whisky: The Scots make their whisky using malted barley or grain, oak casks and an aging process of at least three years. Scotchs flavor is often likened to bourbon but shows off some extra bite and salt-caramel notes.

Willett Family Estate Bottled 4 Year Rye

When Willett resumed production in the early 2010s, it was the first time in over 30 years that the family had made its own whiskey on-site. In no time at all, the distillery began to round out its rye offerings, beginning with a two-year and soon moving to this four year once it had reached a proper age. Like all of Willetts in-house expressions, it makes for a pretty distinctive dram, marrying gentle floral flavors with a bit of contrasting fruit for an added element of complexity.

The Tyroconnell 15 Year Old Madeira Cask Finish

BEST Whisky To Drink STRAIGHT | Top 7

This single malt, 15 Year Old whiskey is one thats truly unique and special. Aged in traditional ex-bourbon barrels and finished in Portugal Madeira Casks gives it an added depth of flavour. The caramel-colored brew is produced in traditional pot stills and double distilled. Because its finished in fortified wine barrels, it gives it a complex and unique flavor notes.

On the palate, you get a sweetness from the Madeira casks which is followed by a release of vanilla notes and stone fruit with a splash of spice at the end.

Connemara Original Peated Single Malt Irish Whiskey

The Connemara Peated Single Malt Whiskey is a welcome change from the traditional unpeated Irish Whiskey. It’s one of the few Irish whiskies that honors the resurgence of the centuries-old practice of drying malted barley over peat fires.

While there is some smoky character to this whiskey, it is hardly the star of the show. At 40% ABV, this whiskey isn’t too potent, favoring subtlety.

At first whiff, you’ll notice notes of smoky peat, yet this whiskey is everything from one-note. With a soft undertone of malted barley and charred wood, the peat gives way to subtle floral and honey notes. This whiskey has rich flavours of chocolate, smoked honey, and toasted barley, with distinct hints of brilliant peat smoke that become apparent with each sip. Smoke, sea salt, and heather honey linger on the palate after the drink’s last sip.

This superb whiskey is a must-try, its one of the best and it deserves to be known as such.

    Togouchi Premium Blended Japanese Whisky

    • Togouchi Premium Blended Japanese Whisky, £42.50 from Amazon – buy here

This blended whisky shows just how delicate and elegant Japanese-style bottlings can be. In the glass its so pale you could almost mistake it for white wine.

Made by Chugoku Jozo distillery, also a sake brewer, Tougouchi Premium Blended isnt in a traditional warehouse, but rather in a tunnel outside of Hiroshima. It sounds strange, until you realise the tunnel has a constant low temperature and stable humidity the perfect conditions for resting spirits.

Despite the overall gentle character, I still get plenty from the glass. My main takeaways are honey, pepper and a light but distinct smokiness. Theres perhaps a touch of white flowers on the nose, too.

Adding a bit of water really enhances the character of this whisky, so dont hesitate to enjoy it with a glug of soda in a highball cocktail.
