    How To Drink Scotch Whisky

Like the world’s Scotch whisky fans actually need telling…

IS THERE a right way to drink whisky? asks Rupert Patrick, CEO and co-founder of WhiskyInvestDirect.

The first time I considered this question seriously was twenty years ago, when I was hosting the spirits buyer for a major French supermarket group for a two-day visit to Scotland. I’d arranged for him to visit two distilleries. On the first evening, at a bar in Inverness, he asked for a Laphroaig and coke. He knew a bit about Scotch and pronounced the brand perfectly. But the barman refused to serve him his chosen drink.

Instead he gave him a lecture on how you do and how you do not drink Scotch whisky.

Since then, my whisky career has taken me to over forty different countries, emerging and emerged, and I’ve seen almost that many ways of drinking Scotch. Perhaps the one that surprised me most, both from how unusual I found it and how much I liked it, was in Brazil, where Scotch is frequently drunk with coconut water. At that time for me it was Teacher’s, a robust and high malt content blend, but it works with almost any good Scotch.

And where would American whiskey be, Jack or Jim, without coke?

Try it you might just find it becomes your preferred way of drinking blend or malt.

My French guest, by the way, listened to his Inverness lecture, graciously thanked the barman for his advice, and asked him again for a Laphroaig and coke.

How Is Scotch Different From Whiskey

Scotch is a style of whiskey, and the main difference between scotch and other whiskeys is geographic. They also differ in terms of ingredients and how the word whiskey is spelled. Scotch is whisky specifically made in Scotland. It is distilled from peat-dried malted barley, which imparts its signature smoky flavor, and is either blended or single malt. Scotch also spells whisky without the “e.” Other whiskey styles are distilled in other parts of the world from other grains, including corn and rye.

    Nosing Sipping And Savoring

  • 1Get the right whisky glass. While it’s certainly fine to drink your whisky out of any old glass, choosing the right one will enhance your whisky experience. Experts agree that a tulip-shaped glass is generally the best: It allows you to swirl the whisky without it spilling, as well as concentrating the whisky aroma near the glass’s neck.XResearch source
  • If you can’t find a tulip-shaped whisky glass to sip out of, try using a wine or champagne glass instead.
  • 2Pour a small amount of whisky and swirl it around gently. Pour yourself a glass about 1 fl oz full of scotch whisky. Gently swirl the glass, coating the sides of the glass with a thin film of whisky and allowing the spirit to breathe. Enjoy the color of the whisky and its texture as the filmy coat of caramel spindles down the glass.XResearch source
  • Enjoying whisky is much more than just tasting it. Its about the look, the color, and the texture, too.
  • 3Bring the glass up to your nose and inhale deeply. Smell your whisky with your mouth slightly open to fully appreciate the aroma. Take your nose away and then come back to the whisky. Spend a good 20 to 30 seconds breathing in the whisky, setting it down, and coming back to it, all while free-associating about the kinds of smells or flavors the spirit evokes. When nosing, pay attention to the following kinds of smells:XResearch source

  • How To Drink Scotch According To A Scottish Bartender

Elevated Whiskey Drinks You Can Make at Home

Scotch can be a difficult drink for Americans to get into. Whether its due to hard-to-pronounce names, or the perception of Scotch as a serious drinking mans drink, theres an intimidation factor associated with Scotch whisky on this side of the Atlantic. But it doesnt have to be like this. Take Scotland for example, the birthplace of Scotch, where cocktails are served with a heavy dose of Scotch whisky. The liquid basically runs in streams through cocktail programs across Edinburgh. And the Scottish believe that Scotch is for everyone.

Theres no restrictions on getting into Scotch whisky, Jon Linstead, a bartender and bar manager in Edinburgh, Scotland, tells me.

His name is Jon, but his friends call him Jonny, and he comes off like a man who lives and breathes cocktail culture. Linsteads bartending attire is a comfortable short-sleeve button-up, black pants, and a black fedora. Tattoos cover his arms. On his left hand theres a wolf, and an angel rides an eagle on his upper left arm. Its his right arm thats most telling, though. On the underside of his arm stretching nearly from his elbow to his wrist is the Johnnie Walker Striding Man with the slogan Keep Walking beneath it.

What Does Whiskey And Tea Taste Like

Whiskey and tea are both comfort foods that have a warming quality.

This makes whiskey and tea drinks particularly enjoyable when consumed on a cold winter night or rainy afternoon.

The flavors of the two ingredients tend to complement one another.

A good tea can provide herb, citrus, and fruit flavors, without getting in the way of the flavors provided by whiskey.

Whiskey can contribute many additional different flavors, depending on the type of whiskey you use.

A good Scotch whisky might add citrus, dried fruit, dark chocolate, spices, tobacco, peat smoke, and oak.

Use a bourbon whiskey and you might notice more caramel, molasses, vanilla, and honey.

Irish whiskey is particularly good choice, as it can add delicious floral, fruit, herb, and vanilla flavors to your tea. This can work really well with certain tea varieties, like Darjeeling tea and Earl Grey tea.

Although whiskey is quite flavorsome, it doesnt dominate the flavor of tea. Combining whiskey and tea is like partnering wine and cheese they both make the other ingredient taste better.

Given that there are so many different teas and whiskeys available, the challenge is finding a combination that you enjoy. Below are a few recipes to help you get started.

How To Drink Scotch: 4 Mixed Drinks To Ease You In

I love scotch. I like to think this has to do with my Scottish ancestry. My senses thrill to the aroma of peaty bogs and highland breezes. When sipping a complex, peaty scotch, I feel fully and deeply alive.

But straight scotch is not for everyone. It can be a bit brash, especially if youre not in the habit of sipping hard liquor. Another friend requested suggestions for ways of drinking scotch so that the full flavor of the scotch would come through, without being too overwhelming.

This is sort of a tricky request, because scotch is notoriously hard to mix. Scotch is the one girl in the room who gets all the attention, dominating the conversation with its irrepressible smokiness. There are, however, a few scotch cocktails that beat the odds. Armed with a run-of-the-mill blended scotch, and also a gloriously smoky Islay single malt, I sat down to do a little research. Here, the results, in order from least to most hardcore.

    1. Mamie TaylorI know that girly scotch cocktail sounds like an oxymoron, but this combo of scotch, lime juice and ginger beer is about as girly as scotch cocktails come. I could totally see myself sipping one of these by the pool on a summer day.

Verdict: This is a delicious drink, and a great way to consume 2 oz of scotch while hardly realizing it. Use: The cheap blended scotch.

    3. The GodfatherTwo parts scotch, one part amaretto. Surprisingly palatable.
