Tasting Notes: Proper No Twelve Irish Whiskey
Vital Stats: 80 proof, blend of fine grain and single malt whiskeys aged 3+ years 750 mL bottle prices between $20-$30.
Appearance: The whiskey has a very pleasant golden color, like autumn straw, with a slight green hue creeping in on the edges. The bottle is made of green glass and has a solid weight to it.
Nose: The aroma is light, slightly astringent, with honeysuckle and lime more acidic than expected.
Palate: Initial flavor is very light both on flavor and on texture, with hints of spiced apples and pears. Mid way through the alcohol starts to come through with texture across the mouth and a mild bitterness on flavor. Finish is short lived with a slight tingling in the mouth being left behind long after the flavor has disappeared.
Summary
This mostly disappointing whiskey encompasses both bitter and sweet, all while packing a punch that is still a bit rough around the edges. I guess you could say it is a good representation of Mr. McGregor, although maybe not such a good representation of Irish whiskey. The flavor lacks the complexity I would expect for even a three year minimum, and while a bitterness lingers mid-way through, I find myself wanting more character than it can offer.

Unless youve been living under a bridge in the middle of nowhere for the last 5 years you know who Connor McGregor is this is his whiskey. I dont mean I stole this sample of Proper Twelve Irish Whiskey from him, though that would be a cool story, I mean that he worked with the Bushmills folks to create this standard blended Irish Whiskey that in no way represents the flash and power of Connor himself.
If youre wondering why I think this whiskey comes from Bushmills its pretty simple: I read the press release. In the release it says Connor turned to the worlds oldest whiskey distillery, located in Ireland which is Bushmills claim to fame. It also says he worked with David Elder, esteemed master distiller, previously of Guinness but whose most recent position,, was Distilling Manager at Bushmills. They go through great lengths to not say whats right in front of you.
Is Proper Twelve A Good Irish Whiskey
Proper No. received an average rating of 4.2 out of 540 votes. You get seven Irish Whiskeys if you have twelve. 2/10. This is the correct number. One of the best-known Irish whiskey brands in the world, Twelve Irish Whiskey is admired for its rich flavors of vanilla, honey, toasted wood, and green apple.

Proper Twelve Irish Whiskey Review: Overall
The overall profile of the Proper Twelve Irish Whiskey is light honied fruit just like every other young blended Irish whiskey out there. The aroma, the palate and even the finish are pretty standard for the likes of Bushmills White or any of the other dozens of entry-level low proof Irish blends out there. Though what isnt standard is the color.
Irish blends, like those mentioned, arent this dark so Im suspecting some e150a might have been employed because it doesnt smell or taste old enough to be this dark and I dont get a whiff of sherry. On the whole it is a fairly standard Irish blend that is neither daring or flashy, nor does it pack a punch its the antithesis of its creator.
I respect Connor as a fighter, I enjoy watching his fights, and knowing his flash, style and knock out power I expected his whiskey to reflect that. Instead, we have nothing more than another young, low-proof, grain heavy Irish blend on a shelf already overburdened by the same. Proper Twelve is really no better or worse than something like Bushmills White or Kilbeggan Blended Irish Whiskey and doesnt deserve any more heat or derision than you would those or dozens of whiskeys like them.

Proper No. Twelve Irish Whiskey ticks a lot of boxes for a bottle of whiskey that wont set you back more than $50. Its due care and attention mean McGregor didnt rush to produce the first bottle that came to mind but, despite all of the hard work that went into creating Proper #12 Irish Whiskey, he insisted that his brand had to remain budget-friendly.
McGregor had been approached multiple times by varying spirits producers who all wanted a partnership with this Mixed Martial Arts champion. With that in mind, he set out to disregard all of those offers and produce his own offering instead. While the former option may have been faster, the latter proved more enjoyable.
With the help of his master distiller, McGregor created a unique and special blend. Proper No. Twelve Irish Whiskey is a beautiful blend of sweet Irish grain and single malt Irish whiskey. The spirit is distilled four times for ultimate smoothness and utilizes its single malt whiskey for extra complexity to the grain.
Through much trial and error, including sampling at least 100 blends, Proper No. Twelve Irish Whiskey was born.
And its name? That, again, embodies McGregors Irish roots, from one word to the next. Proper, meaning the right way to create whiskey, and No. Twelve pays homage to McGregors hometown of D12: Dublin 12.

Proximo Spirits Is Purchasing Proper No Twelve
Conor McGregor just got even richer. The UFC star and his business partners sold their majority stake in Proper No. Twelve Irish whiskey to Proximo Spirits in a deal that is worth up to $600 million. Proximo Spirits, which also owns Jose Cuervo and Bushmills, in addition to other brands, already had a 49 percent stake in Proper No. Twelve Irish Whiskey. Now, it owns a much bigger stake — the size of which is unknown still.
As McGregor’s business partner Ken Austin told Shanken News Daily, it was the plan all along for Proximo to eventually buy a majority stake in the company.
“When we started this business with Proximo, we basically laid out, I’ll call it certain hurdles, that would allow them to buy pieces of the company over time,” Austin told Shanken News Daily. “We hit a milestone and it gave Proximo the opportunity to own a significant stake.”
McGregor celebrated the sale in an Instagram post, noting that “Proper Twelve is my baby for life.”

Born and bred in the Dublin suburb of Crumlin, Dublin 12. Proper Twelve is who I am, McGregor stated. I wanted to make an Irish whiskey emblematic of Irish culture as a whole, and something that would showcase the great skill we possess of distilling the best Whiskey in the entire world.
McGregor originally wanted to name the Proper Twelve whiskey after his own nickname, Notorious, but the 30-year-old entrepreneur had to settle with Proper No. Twelve after a trademark dispute.
“I come from a place called Crumlin, in Dublin 12. It’s a place dear to my heart. It’s where I learned how to fight it made me who I am today. It’s a place I’m still very much a part of every single day of my life. So, that’s where the name came from. It’s proper Irish whiskey and twelve is my hometown,” said McGregor. “Growing up on the streets of Dublin 12, I learned the values of loyalty and hard work. Conor McGregor’s stunt of bringing a bottle to his press conference has seen them fly off the shelves, with Tesco Ireland having to limit customers to just two per sale.
It can bought in supermarkets across Ireland, but there are currently no plans to move it to the UK.
