What Is Black Label Whiskey

Is Johnnie Walker Double Black Better Than Black

Johnnie Walker Black Label Scotch (Whisky Review)

The strong point of the Black Label is the fact that it is more accessible, easy drinking and smooth with rich peat. It has more fruity notes and is slightly spicier than the Double Black. The Double Black is bolder, more vibrant and more luxurious. Double Black is a more grown-up version of the Black Label whisky.

Johnnie Walker Black Label Vs Blue Label Know The Difference

Johnnie Walker is one of the worlds most well-known producer of blended Scotch whiskies. Their products are sold in almost all countries over the world, and have consistently done well in international whisky tasting competitions and awards shows.

Their inventory is made up of some impressive blended Scotch whiskies, and consists of some great no-age-statement blends such as the Johnnie Walker Red Label, the Johnnie Walker Blue Label, and some iconic whiskies with an age-statement such as the Johnnie Walker Black Label with an age statement of 12 years, and the Platinum Label with an age statement of 18 years.

Comparing two different expressions from the Johnnie Walker portfolio is a tough task since their core range is placed on a one-tier hierarchy beginning from the Red Label, which is their standard blend, and the Blue Label, their most expensive and premium blend.

Today, we are drawing a comparison between the Johnnie Walker Black Label, one of their highest selling whiskies, and the Johnnie Walker Blue Label, the most premium and luxurious blend from the brand.

Johnnie Walker Red Label Vs Johnnie Walker Black Label

From the house of Johnnie Walker, two of the most famously preferred blended Scotch whiskies of the world, the Johnnie Walker Red Label and the Johnnie Walker Black Label are both excellent choices. But how are they different from each other? Is there a better contender among the two? Lets find out.

The Johnnie Walker brand was established in 1820, as a grocery store before founder, John Walker steered the business into the whisky blending industry. Upon Johns death in 1857, his son, Alexander Alec Walker, and grandson, Alexander Walker II augmented the Johnnie Walker brands interests in the whisky blending business, developing some of their earliest blended expressions such as the Old Highland, Special Old Highland and the Extra Special Old Highland.

These expressions were commonly referred to by the colour of their labels, which gave birth to the Johnnie Walker tradition of naming their expressions based on different colours. The Special Old Highland became the Johnnie Walker Red Label and the Extra Special Old Highland became the Johnnie Walker Black Label.

Johnnie Walker Red Label, earlier carried an age-statement of 10 years, but was later re-introduced as a no-age-statement blend in 1909. It became the standard Johnnie Walker blend in their inventory, and has been one of their most consistently bestselling expressions ever.

    Black Labels Palate & Mouthfeel

    • Primary Tastes: Sweet, Sour
    • Opening: Blood Orange, Honey, Vanilla
    • Heart: Toffee, Leather, Seaweed
    • Finish: Medium-Long

Overall, Johnnie Walker Black Label offers a contrasting sweet and sour primary profile, which is extended by its oily yet warming mouthfeel. Swirling the liquid around my palate, it opens with a richer citrus note of blood orange, caramelised honey, and a soft vanilla note.

Personally, I feel that Black Labels opening is somewhat anti-climactic. Nevertheless, it picks up well by the time it makes its way to the heart. By this time, it really stimulates the palate and I experienced thick toffee, meaty leather as well as a brine seaweed note.

However, it was the finish that was the most interesting experience. Firstly, its exceedingly peppery yet a mulled mincemeat flavour still manages to pull through. Meanwhile, a creosote aroma lingers on the palate for a mildly smoky finish.

At 40%, few people will feel a need to add water to the whisky. Still, a few drops does help open up some of the notes and the smoky flavours will particularly benefit from this. Given that it can be quite peppery, this may help reduce the overall alcohol bloom.

Consequently, Is Scotch smoother than whiskey?

This is the reason American whiskies tend to be dark and heavy in vanilla flavor, while scotch is a softer, smoother drink. The different types of whiskies are identified based on the combination of three factors: the grain used, barrel maturation, and the country of origins legal definition of whiskey.

Also question is, Is there a sweet Scotch?

You can definitely get your sweet teeth soothed by Scotch. Though the flavor notes will differ, the softer, sweeter flavors are certainly there, While sweeter bourbons are typically known for their caramel, vanilla, and sweet corn flavors, Scotch has more honey, floral, and dried orange peel notes predominating.
