Why Is Jack Daniels Bad For You
In terms of whiskey, Jack Daniels does not represent craftsmanship over marketing. Theres nothing smooth or smooth-tasting about this whiskey its harsh, raw, underaged, and terrible. If you are just starting out, perhaps Makers Mark or Woodford Reserve would be a good choice. Jim Beam, a perfectly respectable middle shelf bourbon, is the next best thing if you cant afford them.
What’s Jack Daniel’s Secret Ingredient
Charcoal. Really, it’s two things: charcoal and the knowledge passed down from an African American slave, Nearest Green. Here are the CliffNotes. Historians now believe that slaves brought over a version of Jack Daniel’s distilling technique from West Africa, where it’s not uncommon to cook foods and filter drinks over charcoal . Nearest Green, who undoubtedly inherited these techniques from his ancestors, worked as Jack Daniel’s first distiller . Three of his children, George, Lewis, and Eli, and three of his grandchildren, Ott, Charlie, and Otis, carried on the tradition.
The Greens would teach Jack Daniel that filtering whiskey through charred sugar maple dramatically changes its taste. Why? There are roughly 35 different aromatic compounds in whiskey distillate. Filtering freshly distilled, unaged whiskey over charcoal mellows the liquor’s taste by reducing the strength of some of these by up to 50 percent.

A History Of Jack Daniels
Jack Daniels was co-founded by Jasper Newton Jack Daniel in 1875 in Lynchburg, Tennessee.
His partner was a man named Dan Call, a local lay preacher who had taken Daniel in.
Dan Call had previously made moonshine with a master distiller named Nathan Nearest Green, an enslaved African-American man. Jack Daniels began learning his craft at a young age from these two men.
Shortly after the distillery was established, Dan Call quit the business for religious reasons.
In 1884, Daniel purchased the land where the distillery stands today.
The business grew quickly and by the late 1880s the Jack Daniels distillery was one of the most productive in the county. The distillery began using square bottles in 1897, which were chosen to symbolise a sense of fairness and integrity.
Daniel never married and when his health began to fail in 1907, he gave the distillery to two nephews.
Statewide prohibition began in 1910 and Daniel passed away in 1911 from blood poisoning.
Fortunately, alcohol prohibition was eventually removed and the distillery once again began making the wonderful Tennessee whiskey for which it is known.
What You Should Know About Its Distillery
The distillery of Jack Daniels is the worlds oldest registered whiskey distillery located in Lynchburg, Tennessee. The distillery is situated around Jack Daniels Hollow, where a spring flows at the base of the limestone cliff. The limestone from the cave removes the iron from the liquid, which makes it ideal for distilling.
Out of few countries in North America, Lynchburg is one of the towns that endures hangovers, so spirits on sale are prohibited, unlike beer and wines. With the help of Jack Daniels nephew, Lem Motlow, the distillation and manufacturing of liquors will be allowed, but selling is prohibited.

How Is Jack Daniels Whiskey Made
Jack Daniels whiskey is a grain-based spirit that uses grains such as wheat, barley, or rye to convert the starch in the grains into sugar. After that, yeast is added to the sugary mixture to let fermentation do its work. At this level, the alcohol content is below 10%. Here, the combination goes through a distillation process to increase the concentration of alcohol content.
A pot still, which is where a part of the distiller’s beer is put in a big copper pot with a long, narrow neck, is the conventional technique. This method is time-consuming and takes many runs through the still to get a high enough alcohol concentration, but it usually results in a more flavored spirit.
The column still, continuous still, and Coffey still are the main processes used for distillation.
At this level, the alcohol is tasteless and is as white as Christmas snow. This type of whiskey is called white dog or white lightning.
At the next level, to give Jack Daniels whiskey its color and taste, it is stored in barrels for an extended period of time. Working under the forces of temperature and humidity, the color and flavor start changing until you get a sour brown whiskey.

The Secret Ingredient You Didn’t Realize Was Used To Make Jack Daniel’s
If Westerns are to be believed, the first American settlers in the Wild West drank more whiskey than water. It’s so important to American culture, that in 1794, we literally rebelled against our founding father, President George Washington, over whiskey . Face it. There is no liquor more American than whiskey. And while America makes a lot of whiskeys, Jack Daniel’s is, perhaps, the most famous. Need proof? In sheer numbers, Jack Daniel’s sold 13.3 million, 9-liter cases of its whiskey in 2018 . If numbers don’t sway you, maybe music will. Rumor has it that the great Frank Sinatra wouldn’t let a concert go by without toasting with a glass of Jack .
The only logical conclusion is that you can’t beat the taste of Jack Daniel’s. But why? The answer lies in its distillation process, the so-called “Lincoln County Process.” The process dates back hundreds of years and depends on a secret ingredient .
Its Matured In An Uninsulated Building
Jack Daniels is matured in uninsulated buildings. In the summer, warm weather forces whiskey into the cracks in the wooden barrel and in the winter, it pushes it back out. This is how the whiskey gets it color and flavor. This happens for four years before the initial tasting. If its ready then, itll get bottled. If its not, it gets put back and tested at years five and six. The maximum time for maturation is eight years because after that, whiskey starts to lose its sweetness.

The Whiskey Is Filtered Through Charcoal
Tennessee whiskey is born from a bourbon, but before its barreled it gets filtered through 10 feet of sugar maple charcoal kind of like a Brita, a Jack Daniels spokesperson told The Daily Meal. Three days a week, staffers stack pallets of hard sugar maple soaked in raw, unaged whiskey. These get set on fire and burn until theyre nothing but pellet-sized pieces. Filtering the whiskey through charcoal gets rid of any impurities, creating a better tasting and smoother spirit.
