What Is A Mojito

Mojitos are a cocktail from Havana, Cuba. At the time, Cuban rum was not what it is today. It was not smooth and was hard to enjoy on its own. Thus, the Mojito was created! With a little sugar, mint and lime juice, Cubans were able to transform the unpalatable rum into something absolutely delicious!

As Americans were permitted to visit Cuba, the love for Mojitos began to spread and now its one of the most well known cocktails in the world! A few fresh ingredients, ice and a good white rum are all you need to enjoy this Cuban classic!

Garnishes And Other Options

Instead of lime wedges, some mojitos are garnished with a lemon slice or wedge, or both fresh lemon and lime. Fresh mint sprigs are normally part of the mojito garnish, regardless of the type of liquor used. Bars occasionally offer variations on mojitos that include the addition of fruits such as strawberries or blackberries.

My easy technique comes from a bartender I met when we were on vacation in the Caribbean. He showed me that they prep a mojito simple syrup with mint and lime which ups the flavor in mojitos. You still muddle together some fresh mint and lime the old fashioned way, but adding in that mojito simple syrup elevates the flavor to a new level!

A Brief History Of The Mojito

The history of the mojito is shrouded in as much mystery as my blacked-out nights drinking them at a Chilis in Ocean City, MD. However, much like these nights, Ive been able to piece together a coherent timeline with thorough research and documentation.

The starting point of mojitos is disputed, but it is widely believed to have gotten its start at La Bodeguita del medio, a restaurant/bar in Havana, Cuba.

Another widely believed claim is that the drink was invented by African slaves working in Cuban sugar cane fields and was, at its foundation, just a basic sugar cane alcohol.

However, there is another story that goes even furtherback.

History Of The Mojito

While it is generally agreed Havana, Cuba is the birthplace of the Mojito, many other details about the origin of this tasty beverage are up for debate.

One version begins in the 1500s, when Sir Francis Drake landed in Havana, planning to sack the city and take its riches. While the mission failed, it did take a fortuitous turn. Some of Drakes crew were suffering from dysentery and scurvy and a remedy needed to be found. When a small party went ashore in Cuba they came back with aguardiente de cana, mint leaves, sugar cane, and limes. They concocted a tonic from these ingredients that helped the afflicted crew members immensely. Of course we now know that it was the lime juice that did the heavy lifting but out of the chaos the Mojito, or the El Draque as it was known at that time, was born.

An alternate origin story has the drink being created by African slaves working in Cuban sugar cane fields in the 1800s. Guarapo, which is the sugar cane juice commonly found in Mojitos, was frequently enjoyed by the slaves who named it, although they never included lime juice in their recipe.

A Mojito With Vodka: Pros And Cons

Is a mojito recipe with vodka good? Can you substitute vodka in a mojito? Heres our honest opinion:

    • A vodka mojitoloses the tropical fruitiness thats the essence of a true Mojito. We dont recommend it unless you ran out of rum or are mixing the drink for someone who cant stand the stuff.
    • The vodka mojito still tastes good! Think of it like a Vodka Gimlet with mint. Its minty and refreshing. However, theres almost no perception of alcohol since vodka is a very neutral spirit. Its a little, dare we say it, boring.

    Simple Syrup With Honey

Simple syrup is just a 1:1 ratio of sugar to water cooked down into a syrup. When you do it with honey you dont get the same thickness, but you do get a lovely floral flavor. Additionally by making the simple syrup with honey you dont have to use refined sugars.

You could make a big batch of the honey mint simple syrup and have it ready in the fridge for this cocktail and others. No matter the volume you make, the ratios are the same.

    Where Was The Mojito Invented

    How to Make a Mojito

The mojito originated in Cuba, possibly derived from a 16th-century medicinal tonic known as El Draque . It’s said that in the 1800s, Africans who had been enslaved and working in Cuba’s sugarcane fields commonly took a similar elixir. As it advanced from tonic to beverage, the mint, lime, and sugar masked the taste of cheap rum. Havana lays claim to inventing the cocktail as it’s known today with the introduction of ice and soda. The mojito grabbed international attention when Americans flocked to Cuba during Prohibition. It was supposedly second to the daiquiri on Ernest Hemmingway’s list of favorite cocktails. Over the years, the rum improved, and the mojito’s fame spread immensely.

We love serving our Vodka Mojito on hot days in the summer at family barbecues, cottage happy hour and on sun-soaked patios.

When preparing a traditional mojito, fresh lime juice is added to sugar and mint leaves. The mixture is then gently mashed with a muddler. The mint leaves should only be bruised to release the essential oils and should not be shredded or sliced. Then rum is added and the mixture is briefly stirred to dissolve the sugar and to lift the mint leaves up from the bottom for better presentation. Finally, the drink is topped with ice and soda water. Mint leaves and lime wedges are used to garnish the glass.
