Make Your Own Margarita Mix

A Note About Measuring

How To Make Margarita Mix | Easy Margarita Recipe

In the recipe section, I referred to the ingredients as shots. Some recipes use ounces, cups, and shots, all in one. Holy confusion after youve had a few.

The very average-sized shot glass I use holds the same amount of liquid as a 1/4-cup measure, which makes it easy to make the recipe in bulk. X parts this to Y parts that.

While you could technically share the recipe as written, after having one, youll want another. So plan on it serving one, nicely. You can sip worry-free since theres no granulated sugar.

They go down so incredibly easy. Especially on vacation.

Best Tequila For Margaritas

For tastiest results, use a blanco, or clear, tequila made with 100 percent agave. This type of tequila has the smoothest, cleanest flavor, and it blends seamlessly with the other ingredients in a margarita.

You don’t have to spend a fortune on tequila, but better quality tequila does build a better margarita. Fortunately, you can find plenty of quality options that will cost you less than $30 for a 750 ml bottle . Avoid mixto tequilas, which may include partial amounts of agave, sugar, food coloring, and other ingredients.

No Added Sugar: By Definition

Youll notice theres one element of many margarita recipes missing: sugar! Many bars, restaurants and of course store bought mixes add lots of simple syrup or added corn syrup. Why ruin this classic drink by making it syrupy sweet?

Added sugar isnt even by definition included in this classic cocktail. And dont worry: this margarita tastes perfectly tart and balanced with no need for added sweetener. To be fair, there is some sugar in the Cointreau: it provides just enough balance to the lemon and lime.

How Do You Make A Skinny Margarita

For my favorite skinny margarita recipe, I just make a couple of tiny changes compared to a classic margarita. Replace the Triple Sec with freshly squeezed orange juice for that simple orange flavor without the extra calories. You can also use agave syrup to add a bit of sweetness to your liking. This comes out to less than 200 calories for a large glass of my skinny margaritas!

How To Turn This Into A Cocktail

Make Your Own Strawberry Margarita Mix

How do you turn margarita mix into a margarita? Just add alcohol! I love just making a classic margarita with this mix. Two of my other favorites are to make a frozen margarita or a frozen strawberry margarita. Heres exactly how much alcohol to add, to make either a single margarita or an entire pitcher:

  • How much liquor do I add to make my margarita? You will use 3 ounces of the mix, 2 ounces tequila, and 1 ounce triple sec.
  • Can I pre-make this mix with alcohol, so I just have to pour it instead of mixing it for individual drinks? Yes, if you want to make this into a pitcher drink, you can mix 22 ounces of tequila with 11 ounces of the triple sec into the margarita mix to get your premade margaritas.

How To Make A Pitcher Of Margaritas:

Homemade Margarita Mix

Detailed instructions are included in the recipe below, but here is a brief overview of how to make pitcher margaritas:

  • Prep your glasses: If you would like to salt the rims of your glasses, simply run a juicy lime wedge around the rims and then dip the rims in coarse Kosher salt. Set the glasses aside until ready to use.
  • Stir the ingredients together in a large pitcher: Combine the tequila, lime juice, orange liqueur and a handful of ice in a large pitcher and stir to combine.
  • Taste and add sweetener, if desired: Give the margarita mix a taste, and if you think it needs extra sweetener, add in a tablespoon or two of agave at a time, until the drink reaches your desired level of sweetness.
  • Serve on the rocks. Place a few ice cubes in each serving glass, then pour the margarita mix over the ice and garnish each glass with a slice of lime.

Every Good Margarita Mix Starts With Its Limes

Why are limes so important to margaritas? Because they provide that delicious citrusy tang that makes margaritas, well, margaritas. And not just any lime will do – you want to make sure they’re fresh, juicy, and green. If your limes are starting to brown or get wrinkly, they’re past their prime and won’t give your margarita mix the flavor it deserves.

There are different types of limes that can alter the taste of your margarita. The most common lime is the Persian lime, which is what you’ll find in your standard margarita mix. These limes are relatively small, with a thick skin that’s easy to remove. If you’re looking for a margarita with a little more zing, go for the key lime. Key limes are smaller and more tart than Persian limes, so they’ll give your margarita a bit of extra acidity.

What type of lime is best in margaritas? The answer is: it depends on your taste. If you like your margaritas on the sweeter side, go with Persian limes. If you prefer a tart margarita, go for key limes. And if you can’t decide, mix it up and use both!

My primary reason for using a variety of citrus fruit is because it nicely offsets the limes tartness without requiring a lot of refined sugar. Plus, the layer of flavors is amazing.

Tips For Making The Best Homemade Margaritas

I prefer my margaritas boldly tart but sweet enough to balance the tartness, and Im not shy with the tequila. Youll need to find the exact ratio of ingredients that you enjoy best.

Small changes can have a big effect on taste. Like a half shot glass of lime juice or a small drizzle of agave can really make a difference. Play around with this fresh margarita recipe to find your happy place, pun intended.

You can doctor up the basic mixture as you like by adding other liquors or add a handful of strawberries, put it all in a blender, and youve got a frozen strawberry margarita in seconds.

Its also worth mentioning that you want to look for really juicy limes. In general, paler green limes and those with yellow spots, as well as those with thin skin are juicier than darker-skinned limes or those with thicker skin. Medium/large limes seem to release their juice easier than small limes.

Choose A Sweetener To Balance Out The Citrus Of Your Mixer

Have you ever bitten straight into a lime? I bet you puckered just reading that question…

Limes are incredibly tart, and margaritas need just the right amount of sweetness to balance out that acidity. That’s why cane sugar, simple syrup, or agave nectar are essential ingredients in any margarita mix. We’re not even going to talk about high-fructose corn syrup and all that S#*t that you shouldn’t be drinking anyways.

Simple Syrup: Simple syrup is the most common sweetener used in margaritas, and you can find a quick recipe simple syrup recipe we wrote here. Simple syrup is made by boiling sugar and water together until the sugar has dissolved, and it’s typically a one-to-one ratio of sugar to water. Super easy, and can be customized to integrate other flavors as well like this strawberry simple syrup.

Agave Nectar: This is what you’ll find in FICKS Margarita Mix and our other tequila-focused cocktail mixers. Agave nectar is a popular alternative to simple syrup because it’s a natural sweetener derived from the agave plant. It has a similar taste to honey, and is a great way to add some sweetness to margaritas without adding any additional flavors. It’s also a little healthier, as it has a lower glycemic index than sugar.

Make your own sweet and sour mix at home to make your own fabulous cocktails and mocktails. Loaded with fresh flavors, and less sugar than the store-bought stuff, youll agree this is the best margarita mix youve tried!

Darlings, I havent bought margarita mix in like 10 years. Not that I dont love a good margarita, especially with tacos, but I just cant with the sugar for drinks mixed at home. So for the longest time we just made margaritas like this key lime margarita. Super simple and made for sipping. But then we went to a restaurant and I tried a margarita that inspired the recipe coming on Friday. And darlings, restaurants use margarita mix! Theres just no way around it when youre making margaritas in volume! But many of them also make their own margarita mix, and now you can too!

How Much Alcohol Is In A Margarita

This really depends on the recipe and your preferences. My preferred ratio for a great margarita is 2 parts Tequila to 1 part lime juice and 1 part Triple Sec. Thats quite a bit of alcohol in any given margarita .

So for a typical glass, you could expect 3 ounces of alcohol. If you want less alcohol in your drink, simply use a 1:1:1 ratio .

What Is The Best Tequila For Margaritas

You can use whatever tequila you like for margaritas, but I prefer to go with cheaper options rather than the best Tequila. Once its mixed in, having the highest quality Tequila wont matter.

That being said, I also dont pick the cheapest Tequila. Go for a good mid-range Tequila and youll be set. Repasado Tequilas are much smoother than Blanco Tequilas, so I prefer that.

    How To Upgrade Your Margarita

Make Your Own Strawberry Margarita Mix

There are so many ways you can upgrade your margarita recipe! Try out some of these varieties to shake things up a bit.

    • Spice up your salt rim. I like to add lime zest and a pinch of cayenne to the salt. You can also add a bit of sugar to the mix.

    • Try it with mezcal! A mezcal margarita is a very different experience but just as delightful. Mezcal is an Oaxacan spiritlike tequila, its from the agave plant, but has a smokier profile. It can make a lovely margarita with a complex flavor.

    • Add some fruit for a flavored margarita. This is a classic way to personalize your margarita. I love to add fresh berries in the summer, either muddled into a drink on the rocks or blended in a frozen margarita.

    • Cointreau is a type of triple sec, or orange liqueur, which is a classic choice for margaritas. But there are many types of triple sec out there that would be just as delicious. You can also try other types of orange liqueurs like Grand Marnier or Curacao, which will change the flavor slightly.

    • Heat water and sugar until boiling and sugar is dissolved.
    • Add fresh mint bunches and let cool.
    • Add the lime and lemon juice and whisk.
    • Pour into a storage jar with additional fresh mint leaves inserted.
    • Keep cool.

    Tips For The Best Margaritas

    • To get the most juice out of each lime, let them come to room temperature and roll them on a hard surface before cutting them in half and squeezing them.
    • You dont need to boil the sugar and water mixture . It just needs to be heated through so that the sugar dissolves when you stir it.
    • If you are sensitive to the very tart flavor of the lime juice, you can add up to one cup more water to make the mix less acidic.
