How To Make A Frozen Margarita

Frozen margaritas are thicker, slushier versions of traditional margaritas. They’re ultra refreshing when it’s hot outside, and whipping them up makes any occasion instantly more festive. Frozen margaritas are great for a crowd, plus they’re even easier to make than margaritas on the rocks.

To make frozen margaritas, you’ll need a blender and plenty of crushed ice. Unlike a margarita on the rocks, we don’t recommend using fresh lime juice in a frozen margarita. Because frozen margaritas require a good amount of ice to blend, you need a tangy ingredient that packs more punch than lime juice.

Frozen lime concentrate, which you’ll find in the freezer section of most grocery stores, has just the right amount of intense lime flavor to stand out in a frozen margarita. Plus, its cold, icy texture will also give your margarita a smoother consistency. Here’s one more thing to love about frozen lime concentrate you can use the empty container as a measuring cup for the tequila.

Ice Can Make A Big Difference In Your Margarita

People who sit at Stodel’s bar often ask why their at-home cocktails never taste as good as they do in restaurants, even when they use the same ingredients.

That’s because they’re forgetting about the ice.

“Chances are at home, you’re using the ice out of your freezer that comes in one of those molds,” Stoldel told me. “Those are really hard and dense.”

So Stodel recommends breaking up the ice before shaking your margarita.

“You can use the back of a spoon and just break them in , and we’ll get an excellent result,” he said. “You’ll get more dilution, it’ll be colder, it’ll be crisper it’ll be delicious.”

What Kind Of Tequila Is Best For Margaritas

Reposado tequila is typically the go-to for margaritas, but you can use blanco, reposado, or añejo varieties. Its all personal preference!

In these photos, I used a really good añejo tequila that I had in the cupboard because I was craving something with a bit more complexity and sweetness. When I want a margarita thats simply refreshing and crisp, I choose a reposado or blanco tequila.

The most important thing when choosing tequila for classic margaritas is quality. Since margaritas are only made with three ingredients, choosing a high-quality tequila is important since there is nowhere for flavors to hide!

    Is Margarita A Strong Drink

They are sweet but strong, meeting the requirements of many drinkers. On average, a margarita is about 3 ounces of liquid. Of that, 2 to 2.5 ounces is alcohol, with a bit of lime juice/mixer and some water from melted ice. With 80 proof tequila and factoring in mixers and melting ice, margaritas have about 33% ABV.

    A Mason Jar Margarita

The Spruce Eats / Claire Cohen

It has become popular to serve margaritas in a Mason jar with a ton of ice. The original margarita recipe was designed to be served as a short drink, with a volume of just 3 1/2 ounces. As with most classic cocktail recipes, it will barely fill many of today’s larger margarita and cocktail glasses, much less a Mason jar.

If you want to make a Mason jar margarita, you need a recipe designed for the larger volume. This modern version makes a drink that’s just over 6 ounces. With plenty of ice cubes and fresh fruit, it will fill the average Mason jar mug perfectly.

To make this margarita, shake 2 ounces tequila, 1 ounce triple sec, and 3 ounces fresh sour mix with ice. Strain it into an ice-filled Mason jar and add a few lime wedges.

This can also be mixed directly in your Mason jar. At first, cut back on the ice, shake or stir the drink, then fill it with fresh ice cubes.

If you’re a fan of mixing drinks in Mason jars, Shane Carley’s “The Mason Jar Cocktail Companion” is an excellent book. All of the recipes are measured in parts and many of the booze-heavy recipes have been adapted to the higher volume. Carley’s Mason jar margarita, for instance, mixes 3 parts tequila, 2 parts orange liqueur, and 1 part lime juice.

And Always Use A Tequila That’s 100% Pure Agave

The Perfect Fresh Lime Margarita | Patrón Tequila

Stodel warns against using mixto tequila. Only agave sugars are used in the fermentation of 100% agave tequila, but mixto tequila consists of 51% blue agave that’s been combined with other types of sugar which may be low-quality, and thus more hangover-inducing.

“Read the label carefully, and try lots of things,” Stodel added. “Maybe you’ll find something you really like.”

Some popular tequila brands that are 100% pure agave include Patrón, Casamigos, Don Julio, and 1800.

How To Make A Pitcher Of Margaritas:

Detailed instructions are included in the recipe below, but here is a brief overview of how to make pitcher margaritas:

  • Prep your glasses: If you would like to salt the rims of your glasses, simply run a juicy lime wedge around the rims and then dip the rims in coarse Kosher salt. Set the glasses aside until ready to use.
  • Stir the ingredients together in a large pitcher: Combine the tequila, lime juice, orange liqueur and a handful of ice in a large pitcher and stir to combine.
  • Taste and add sweetener, if desired: Give the margarita mix a taste, and if you think it needs extra sweetener, add in a tablespoon or two of agave at a time, until the drink reaches your desired level of sweetness.
  • Serve on the rocks. Place a few ice cubes in each serving glass, then pour the margarita mix over the ice and garnish each glass with a slice of lime.

    How To Make Margarita Salt:

    • Coarse Sea Salt

Stir together 2 tablespoons of salt, two tablespoons of sugar, and the zest of one decent sized lime. Rub the edge of your glass with lime juice and roll in the salt mixture. Prepare your cocktail and serve.

Helpful tool: I suggest using a fine grater or zester for the sugar. This will give you smaller lime zest pieces vs big chunks.

    Do You Really Need Cointreau

The very best margarita recipe, in our opinion, features Cointreau as the orange liqueur. Cointreau has a orange perfume flavor thats well balanced between bitter and sweet, while Triple Sec can have a more harsh flavor. But you can use Triple Sec if its all you have!

Fun fact: triple sec means triple distilled: its actually not a brand name. Cointreau is a type of triple sec: its triple distilled. For more, go to Cointreau vs Triple Sec.

    Skip The Lime Garnish

You probably have one or two extra limes lying around after making all that lovely fresh juice. Dont slice them into wedges to use as garnishes, no matter how natural that seems.

Why? Because your drink is perfectly balanced at this point. By adding a lime wedge, you are inviting someone to squeeze it into their drink. That will throw off the citric balance of the cocktail, Mor says. Instead, he suggests expressing an orange peel on top, giving the drink a citrusy aroma without the threat of more acid. Margaritas, like most things in life, are all about balance.

How to Make an Easy Margarita – The Easiest Way

Making tasty margaritas at home is pretty simple and only requires a few ingredients. Of course, just like anything, the quality of those ingredients really matter, especially since there are so few ingredients in this cocktail. Here are my recommendations for the best ingredients for margaritas at home!

    Fresh Lime Juice

If you want to get that fresh tasting margarita just like youd get at your favorite restaurant, you need to start with fresh lime juice. We typically squeeze our own but some grocery stores will sell fresh squeezed lime juice in the produce section. If you are purchasing lime juice, make sure the fresh squeezed limes are the only ingredient. This will also mean that the juice will be refrigerated. If you dont want to squeeze your own, you can order from this company and get their delicious juices shipped right to your house! I would avoid using shelf stable lime juice at all costs.

    The Right Tequila

The quality of your tequila is really going to make or break this drink. I prefer to use tequila blanco in my margaritas. We have a few favorite brands like El Tesoro and Casamigos. Dont skimp and go with cheap tequila or itll ruin your drink!

    The Liqueur

Always Always Always Use Fresh Lime Juice

Grab some limes and squeeze them yourself instead of using a store-bought sweet and sour mix which is traditionally made with lemon or lime juice and simple syrup.

“Don’t use a ‘sweet and sour,'” Stodel said. “That’s gross.”

Ina Garten said freshly-squeezed lime juice is also “very important” for her famous 9 a.m. cosmopolitan, so listen to the pros!

Why Limeade Is The Best Margarita Mix

Its possible to make easy margaritas without a mix! In fact, this tastes better and fresher than using any syrupy sweet sour mix.

Simply Limeade only contains fresh lime juice, cane sugar, and water. Its a great shortcut for making quick and easy margaritas. First, it saves you from squeezing a ton of fresh limes. Plus, it also has a cleaner, fresher taste than manufactured sour mixes containing high fructose corn syrup.

Using Limeade for margaritas is also beneficial when making because it involves only 3 ingredients with no juicing. The taste is perfect balance of fresh, sweet, and tart, much like Skinny Margaritas, but with no juicing!

    How To Upgrade Your Margarita

There are so many ways you can upgrade your margarita recipe! Try out some of these varieties to shake things up a bit.

    • Spice up your salt rim. I like to add lime zest and a pinch of cayenne to the salt. You can also add a bit of sugar to the mix.

    • Try it with mezcal! A mezcal margarita is a very different experience but just as delightful. Mezcal is an Oaxacan spiritlike tequila, its from the agave plant, but has a smokier profile. It can make a lovely margarita with a complex flavor.

    • Add some fruit for a flavored margarita. This is a classic way to personalize your margarita. I love to add fresh berries in the summer, either muddled into a drink on the rocks or blended in a frozen margarita.

    • Cointreau is a type of triple sec, or orange liqueur, which is a classic choice for margaritas. But there are many types of triple sec out there that would be just as delicious. You can also try other types of orange liqueurs like Grand Marnier or Curacao, which will change the flavor slightly.
