Places To Buy Pappy Van Winkle Bourbon In Australia
Premium bourbon whiskey Pappy Van Winkle is often regarded as the best of the best. Although the award-winning drop is also incredibly rare and extremely pricey, meaning most of us havent experienced it for ourselves.
Typically, its a lucky few on a waiting list or the winners of raffle who score a bottle when a small batch is released late each year. Then theres the price. Of the Van Winkle range, the 10-year-old bourbon goes for around USD $500 a bottle, while the 23-year-old Pappy Van Winkles Family Reserve is priced from $2,400. And of course, re-sellers add a mark-up.
They say theres a little Pappy in every bottle of Buffalo Trace bourbon and vise-versa, as the two bourbons are produced in the same renowned distillery, using the same equipment and ingredients. Best of all, Buffalo Trace is readily available at all good bottle shops for around $50-$60 a bottle. If you want to get close to Pappy without breaking the budget, or just want a quality bourbon, Buffalo Trace is the way to go.
If youre still chasing a taste of Pappy, weve discovered an abundance of bars and restaurants across Australia that serve Pappy Van Winkle or Old Rip Van Winkle by the glass, and theres a good chance one of these locals is right near you. We cant guarantee it will be an affordable drink, but we can confirm it will cost a fraction of what a bottle goes for, should you be lucky enough to find one.

Its Really F*cking Good
Your question of, Is the bourbon even good? is a valid one and the answer would have to be Well yes. Its so good that celebrity chef and social culinary anarchist Anthony Bourdain once announced on Twitter that he was seriously considering a Pappy Van Winkle-themed full back tattoo. No, we arent kidding. We knew he was a fan, but not that level. He hasnt said anything since then and we rarely get to see Bourdains full back, but were going to believe he followed through. But Anthony Bourdains willingness to turn his body into a bourbon/ink canvas doesnt tell you anything about the taste.
In the world of bourbon, its a unique one. Obviously, from all the awards. Many attribute Pappy Van Winkles Family Reserves taste to its heavy use of wheat over rye or corn. It gives it less of a bite, and is softer than most other bourbons, which compliments its velvety mouthfeel and notes of vanilla, cherry, and light smokiness very well. Its not a mixing bourbon, so dont commit that capital sin . Sip it like a gentleman and dissect the flavors for yourself. Provided you can find a bottle.
Four Roses Limited Edition Small Batch

Although these bourbons never feature an age statement, they always include some super-mature liquid, up to 21 years old so far . Recommended shelf price is around $150, and even with bottle counts that have grown over the years, this whiskey is still scarce.

Some Pappy Bottles May Contain Bourbon From Another Distillery
As for which ones, its a mystery. Since Pappy joined a joint partnership with Buffalo Trace in 2002, the source of every bottles contents has been a point of contention among whiskey aficionados. Some claim that its impossible for Buffalo Trace to perfectly replicate the same bourbon that was produced in the Stitzel-Weller distillery and won the 1996 award. This belief is one of the reasons that people are willing to fork out far more cash for an older bottle of Pappy. After 2002, whiskey produced at the Buffalo Trace distillery was mixed with old Stitzel-Weller stock before being bottled so some Pappy 23 year as recently as 2015 may have traces of Stitzel-Weller in it.

How To Find Our Whiskeys
We only release stock once per year, because were a small company. On October 1, we tell our wholesalers how many bottles theyll receive. From there, they determine which retailers get that inventory, and distribute accordingly. So it often hits shelves anywhere from mid-October to early December. US Federal law prohibits direct sale of distilled spirits, so we cant sell it ourselves. Because we dont control which retailers receive our stock, we cant track inventory at a retailer level. The list below will help you find retailers that are likely to receive stock, but we cant know for certain.
We know our whiskey can be difficult to find, so our advice is to ask retailers in your area if they expect to receive stock, and if so, how they plan to sell it. Many retailers use a lottery or a waiting list to sell our stock. We recommend you get on as many waiting lists and enter as many lotteries as you can.
Best of luck!

Made by Heaven Hill, these bourbons arent as hard to track down as other limited editions on the list, thanks to the fact that theyre released at regular intervals. Each bottle has a batch code showing when it came out: a letter A, B, or C, indicating whether it was the first, second, or third release of the year followed by a three-digit number. The first digit corresponds to the release month, and the last two are the year. Since theres plenty of both bourbons to go around, its hard for retailers to jack up the price, and finding them at around $65 or $50 should be fairly easy.

Pappy Van Winkle is Americas most coveted whiskey. This is what it takes to track it down.
Editor’s Note: this story was originally reported and published in late 2019.
The other day Im buying an exercise bike from a guy when I see his whiskey collection. Its a nice one, a few shelves worth. The topic of Pappy Van Winkle, that white whale bottle with an enormous price tag, comes up. I ask him if he thinks its possible to find one at a price that wouldnt make my nose bleed.
Ha. It wasnt a laugh really, just an exclamation. Not gonna happen, he says.
Technically, bottles of Pappy Van Winkle start at $130. But youd be hard-pressed to find one for less than ten times that, even at legitimate liquor stores that work directly with Buffalo Trace, Pappys parent distillery. Older expressions like the crème-de-la-crème 23-year-old, which should cost $270 can top $3,000, easy. Thats more than a months rent where youre drinking it.

How To Buy Pappy
Spoilers: short of having a connection with a liquor store owner or distributor, there are no guarantees in the hunt for Pappy. Use these best practices wisely, but temper expectations at the door.
Get on the List: Even the best liquor stores are limited to the allocated bottle count distributed to them. After Buffalo Trace has sent out the years allotment, there wont be new bottles until the next year. This means stores have very few bottles and lots of customers who want them. The most common solution for shops of all sizes is a raffle, so ask the cashier at your local spots if one exists and get yourself on it. Winning the raffle wont net you a free bottle, but at least you get a chance to buy it.
Look at a Map: Stores in population centers are more likely to be allocated coveted whiskey, but theyre also more likely to pull huge crowds. Stores with less visitors or in lower-populated areas are allocated less of the good stuff. This makes the edges of suburbia prime whiskey hunting territory where retailers are more likely to receive Pappy and there are fewer people fighting for each bottle.
Makers Mark Wood Finishing Series
Makers famously rotates the barrels in its warehouses to ensure consistent maturation, so to create unique flavors for its Private Select series and these limited editions, it employs an ever-increasing range of custom wood finishing staves from Kelvin Cooperage. The white oak staves are toasted, roasted, charred and baked to yield specific, intense flavors, from butterscotch and figs to baking spices and tobacco. The Wood Finishing series debuted in 2019 as a once-a-year fall release but sometimes includes a bonus bottling in the spring. Bourbons are named for their stave types, identified by a number and letter code, and bottled at cask strength with a retail price of $60.

This is a rye, but we can assume it isnt a high-rye. The stuff drinks just like bourbon and is probably the second or third best-reviewed of the entire collection. Its one of the oldest ryes on the market and it shows in spades whatever spiciness you associate with rye is bowled over by a rich mix of tobacco, honey, toffee and fruit. This is the Van Winkle whiskey for the whiskey nerd in your life.
Pappy Van Winkle In Alberta
Last known release:
Unlike every other Canadian province, Alberta doesn’t have a provincial liquor monopoly. That means it’s a lot harder to track down where exactly the Pappy bottles go.
But there is good news! While in the past all the Pappy that went to Alberta was sent to “on-premise” clients , at least a couple retailers are getting allocations of Pappy bottles including Wine and Beyond.

Van Winkle Special Reserve 12
Retail Price: $80Street Price: ~$700Proof: 90
Special Reserve 12-year is the Van Winkle whiskey for the Basil Haydens drinker. Forgive the heresy of this comparison, anyone whos tried it knows it to be true. Its lower proof and average maturation time means you dont get harsher alcohol burn on the nose or palate and you dont get swallowed up by oak tannins. That said, like Basil Haydens, its satisfying for everyone from the novice to the seasoned pro.
Why Pappy Van Winkle Can Cost Over $2000 A Bottle
Pappy Van Winkle is the unicorn of bourbons. People say its real, but weve only really seen it in pictures, and most of them probably had some image doctoring going on. For all we know, it could have been a pasted on label to a bottle of iced tea. Though, also for all we know, it could be totally real and what Bigfoot drinks with his college buddies every time they get together in the old cave.
The point is, a bottle of Pappy Van Winkle Family Reserve is super rare and the vast majority of people will go their entire lives without sampling any. That kind of makes sense though, as their normal retail price of between $80 and $250 is high enough to prevent a lot of people from partaking. And thats before the bottles hit the aftermarket, where they routinely fetch anywhere from $750 to over $5,000.
Need an example? Heres a bottle of 20-year-old going for more than two grand. But why? Why on earth would we pay thousands of dollars for something we cant rationalize getting drunk on, also known as the primary reason for alcohol? Is this really a drink people have because they like how it tastes? Why would people tolerate such insane prices for simple alcohol?
Well, herere a few reasons.
