We use Fever Tree at the bars. We use it because its a great all-purpose tonic. I think that there are certain tonics that go better with certain gins, and we have used a different tonic for specific cocktails, but Fever Tree is very balanced with a wide range of gins, as well as other applications. The only other one I would consider is East Imperial, which is delicious and has an amazing texture. Flavor-wise, they both have a strong quinine component, a nice level of sugar, and hold up to big flavors.

Adapting The Gin & Tonic Formula

While this provides a good general guide, with such a versatile spirit one size does not fit all. While you could apply the measurements and method of the above calculation each time you mix up your favourite drink, you have to consider the variation of flavours of each gin.

But really, there are no limits or wrong answers when it comes to gin adventures. There are so many amazing gins out there, the best thing to do is experiment with different garnishes, tonics and even glasses to find your perfect match and the good news is, youll have plenty of fun doing it.

What Types Of Gin Mix Well With Ginger Ale

Best Tonic Water for Gin 2019 Awards, also best tonic ...

Ginger ale is, to say the least, a drink for the acquired taste. Nowadays, there are many sorts of ginger ale on the market. Some are sweeter and more sugary, while others will be crisp and sharp.

Then, theres also the difference between ginger ale and ginger beer. The difference is actually quite simple. Ginger beer is way sharper, whereas ginger ale is a little smoother and sweeter. Ginger ale is more approachable, where ginger beer is a purer, denser version of it.

In either case, ginger ale will always be dominant in a drink, simply because of the sharpness that the ginger gives it. This is also the reason why I initially called it a drink for the acquired taste.

This sharpness, however, is also what makes ginger ale such a fantastic drink. With its sharp, fresh, and sweet taste, ginger ale makes for a fantastic drink, either on its own or as a mixer.

Ginger ale is quite a strong drink, so not every type of gin will be as great with it. With that being said, what types of gin actually mix well with ginger ale?

Ginger ale can be quite strong and sharp, so if you want to mix it with gin, make sure you use a gin that also has a sharp taste. The gin needs to be able to hold its own against the ginger ale, otherwise, you would not be able to taste it.

Another type of gin that goes well with ginger ale would of course be a ginger-infused gin. The ginger-infused gin will perfectly complement the taste of the ginger ale, making for a great combination.

Best Flavored Tonic Water: Regatta Dry Citrus Sparkling Tonic

Regattas Dry Citrus Tonic Water lives up to its name. Its a beautiful combination of bitterness and assertive citrus notes that blend the sweetness of candy with the assertiveness of bitter orange.

Like many flavored tonic waters, Regatta Dry Citrus will overpower sheepish and shy gins but if youre looking for a flavored tonic in 2019, youre probably pairing it with an aggressive and boldly flavored gin. I love the way this flavored tonic pairs with a juniper-forward London Dry.

Which Seedlip Spirit Makes The Best Non

Seedlip Distilled Non-Alcoholic Spirits was a pioneer in the world of non-alcoholic spirits and alternative beverages when it debuted in 2015. They were acquired by Diageo, a huge company in the alcoholic beverages industry.

This might explain the recent visibility in the US market, especially during the first month of the year, aka Dry January. As a drinker of alcohol, I finally had to know: is Seedlip any good? What does it taste like? So, I picked up a 3 pack and started testing it out. This is the beginning of that journey.

We use Fever Trees Mediterranean Tonic. We really love all of the products that Fever Tree offers, but the Mediterranean bottling has a delicate herbal note and is gentler on the palate. We find that in a classic G& T, this is the best option as its more restrained, not too sweet, and really allows the gin to shine.

Tips On How To Make The BEST Gin & Tonic

We would recommend a Spanish-style copa glass to enjoy your G& T in. The shape of the balloon glass means the aromas of the gin are trapped to give a better taste to your G& T 80% of taste is down to smell, which makes this glass style perfect. The size of a copa glass allows you to add a good quantity of ice and will also stop the ice cubes from melting as quickly as they do in a standard Collins glass.

Tonic water is essentially a measure of quininea bitter compound derived from the powdered bark of the cinchona tree and a tremendously effective anti-malarial dissolved in carbonated water with an optional sweetener to help mitigate the bitter flavor, Ford explains. The cinchona originated in South America and was used for several health remedies. But it wasnt until the European influence spread across the continent that its efficacy in treating malaria was discovered. For some, the bitter flavor was a bonus and added a dimension to the drink that couldnt be found anywhere else. And to this day, its a unique flavor that cant easily be reproduced.

The basic G& T is one of the easiest cocktails to master: one part gin, three parts tonic, a light squeeze of citrus, and garnish. And yes, you can add extras such as cucumbers, berries, herbsor whatever else your heart desires.

Fast forward to the present day and youll find that tonic is not what it once was. The amount of quinine has been cut drastically to play down the bitternesswhile sugar content jumped.

    What Does Seedlip Taste Like

There are 3 Seedlip spirits, and none of them have juniper in them. This means none of them are going to taste like gin and therefore cant be called gin substitutes. However, they are made with some interesting ingredients and each blend has a distinct flavor profile.

Below are some first impressions and tasting notes, in addition to what Seedlip mentions in their FAQ. I am not a sommelier, just your average cocktail enthusiast and hobby mixologist trying to make sense of these new beverage options.

Seedlip Grove 42: First impression orange water. Smells like sweet orange, and tastes like the rind. Seedlip Grove seems delicate, yet the orange essence is really powerful. Seedlip lists lemon, ginger, and lemongrass in addition to 3 types of orange, but orange is all I taste. Initially, Im not feeling inspired by this, but it deserves to be explored in some mocktails where one would want to taste the orange grove in their drink. Full review

Seedlip Garden 108: Very herbal, grassy, dry. I think I taste the peas. Seedlip Garden has peas, hay, spearmint, rosemary, and thyme in it. The blend tastes sophisticated. My take: Seedlip Garden will make some excellent alternative beverages. It packs a punch and seems like it will stand its ground in a drink. Full review

I referenced the recipes on the Seedlip website to find their suggested ratios, so that would be 2oz Seedlip Spirit to 5oz Fever Tree Indian tonic water. Results:

Most Authentic: East Imperial Old World Tonic Water

The Best Tonic Water – Craft Taste Test

This is my favorite tonic water, says Seth Falvo, the bartender at Hotel Zamora in St. Pete Beach, Florida. East Imperial boasts that it is the only modern tonic water that sources all key ingredients from Asia, just like the original tonic recipes.”

This fact is a big draw because over the last century, commercial tonic makers have started dosing tonics with sugars to appeal to the soda-drinking crowd. Now, East Imperials Old World Tonic uses less than half the sugar of a standard can of tonic for a pleasant floral flavor profile. Try it with a bold gin to balance out the strong botanicals.

While its low sugar, low acidity mouthful definitely does not make this something to sip on its own, this tonic does a remarkable job at highlighting the subtleties of your favorite gin instead of burying them, Falvo says.

    How Is Gin Made

    Wondering how gin is made?

Any gin starts life as a neutral spirit. Its essentially pure ethanol, and then flavours are added through a process called re-distillation. Gin can be made in a column or pot still.

We like to think of gin as vodka steeped in an aromatic tea bag. Expert distillers essentially heat pure alcohol so it passes through a large tea bag filled with unique spices, herbs and citrus peel. When the pure alcohol comes in contact with this bundle of flavourful ingredients it takes on a unique gin flavour.

The flavourings can be steeped for as long as 48 hours, although some producers will distill the liquid almost immediately. Once completed, water is added to reduce the distillate to bottling strength.

So what are the most common ingredients in gin?

Gin derives its predominant flavour from juniper berries, also known as juniperus communis.

Other popular botanicals or flavourings used in gin making, besides the required juniper, often include citrus elements, such as lemon and bitter orange peel, as well as a combination of other spices, which may include anise, angelica root and seed, orris root, licorice root, cinnamon, almond, cubeb, savory, lime peel, grapefruit peel, dragon eye, saffron, baobab, frankincense, coriander, grains of paradise, nutmeg and cassia bark.

The different combinations and concentrations of these aromatic botanicals in the distillation process cause the variations in taste among different gin brands.

In which an array of nine tonic waters are put through their paces in an attempt to find, once and for all, the tonic to rule them all

This post is part two in a three-post series devoted to the gin and tonic. Part 1 endeavoured to find the best gin. Now, in part 2, the mission is to find the best tonic for gin and tonic

Some time ago, we had the gigantic joust of the gins. Now, at long last, its time for the titanic tiff of the tonics.

Oh, fuck, how much of a wanker does that pair of alliterations make me sound? DONT ANSWER.

Todays mission, then, is to find out which tonic makes the best gin and tonic. The deal here was pretty much the same as with the gins: taste em blind in one joyously ginny lineup. The gin used was my favourite common brand, Tanqueray.

And I make no apologies for the fact that the lineup includes no slimline tonic varieties whatsoever. Because slimline tonic is the corrosive piss of satan.
