Most Authentic: East Imperial Old World Tonic Water
Courtesy of Amazon
This is my favorite tonic water, says Seth Falvo, bartender at The Hotel Zamora in St. Pete Beach, Florida. East Imperial boasts that it is the only modern tonic water that sources all key ingredients from Asia, just like the original tonic recipes.”
In the last century, commercial tonic makers have started dosing tonics with sugars to appeal to the soda-drinking crowd. Now, East Imperials Old World Tonic uses less than half the sugar of a standard can of tonic for a pleasant floral flavor profile. Try it with a bold gin to balance out the strong botanicals.
While its low sugar, low-acidity mouthful definitely does not make this something to sip on its own, this tonic does a remarkable job at highlighting the subtleties of your favorite gin instead of burying them, Falvo says.
Eduardo Carreiro Beverage Director At Marcel Atlanta
We use Fever Trees Mediterranean Tonic. We really love all of the products that Fever Tree offers, but the Mediterranean bottling has a delicate herbal note and is gentler on the palate. We find that in a classic G& T, this is the best option as its more restrained, not too sweet, and really allows the gin to shine.
Which Tonic Water To Match With Which Gin
Questions like “What tonic water should I use with this and that Gin?” will never get old. There are just so many options available that you can get lost quickly. Ans they all taste quite different.
Of course, you always try to find a matching tonic for a Gin. But as there are so many options, I mostly stick to my two favorite tonics.
One is a Fever-Tree’s Indian Tonic, and the other is the Mediterranean tonic, also from Fever-tree. Either one or the other is suitable for almost every type of Gin.
That’s not because they’re the best tonic waters or the best matches for Gin overall. But they are versatile, easy to get and fit a lot of different Gins.
The Indian Tonic goes well with traditional London Dry or Dry Gins, and the Mediterranean with contemporary, fruity, and exotic Gins.

Use Plenty Of Quality Ice
Whenever youre making a highball, you want to use a LOT of ice. Yes, fill the glass with ice. Contrary to popular belief, more ice will actually mean that your drink is less watered down, rather than more. It will also be colder quicker and stay colder longer.
If possible, use large pieces of ice in your drinks. Visit my craft ice guide for more about how to make the best ice for cocktails.

The 7 Best Tonic Waters For Cocktails In 2021
Tonic water is a carbonated beverage like club soda or seltzer, though it does not have their more neutral taste. Tonic water is known for its signature bitterness thanks to quinine, an ingredient that can be found on the bark of cinchona trees. First used by Europeans to treat malaria, British soldiers in colonial India then started to mix in carbonated water and sugar to make it more palatable, resulting in the tonic water we know today.
Also known as Indian tonic water, there is no difference between the two names regardless of the brand though tonic water manufacturers may draw the distinction in their offerings. Although tonic water remains a go-to mix for the best gins, it still plays an essential role in enhancing the taste of spirits and non-alcoholic beverages.
Brands usually infuse their tonic waters with artificial sweeteners, sugar, and high levels of fructose corn syrup to tame the bitterness. They have also started experimenting with earthy and citrusy additions to their products, which may be appealing to consumers who like to try something new. Are you ready to shake up your next drink? Lets get to know the best water tonic options for cocktails this 2021, all made to rejuvenate your heart and soul.
Best Tonic For Gin And Tonic
Tonic water is a product to include with your commercial or home bar essentials. It’s also a core ingredient in how to make a Gin and Tonic. It consists of soda water, sugar, and quinine. You may also want to keep a few soda water brands in stock for making cocktails.
Quinine comes from cinchona tree bark, commonly found in South America and Africa. It provides the bitter flavor that defines tonic water, similar to the taste of English bitter beer.
In recent years, there has been an increase in the number and quality of tonic water brands available on the market. We have more options than ever for choosing the right brand for our Gin and Tonic. Here’s our list of the best tonic water brands for your G& T:

Q Spectacular Tonic Watertonic Water
Q Tonic touts that their quinine is hand-picked, that they use organic agave as the sweetener , all-natural, and has 60% fewer calories than a regular tonic water. Over the past few years, they tweaked the formula and renamed it as Spectacular tonic.
Ingredients: carbonated water, organic agave, citric acid, quinine, natural flavors
Notes: Re-tasted 10/20. In our tasting a few years ago, Q Tonic didnt do well, with tasters noting a medicinal, slightly astringent taste with a metallic, bitter, and pithy quality. This time the tonic did better, rising to the number one overall choice of the big commercial brands, reminding us of the traditional tonics of years ago. It opens a bit harsh, with juniper overtones. The strong floral citrus notes varied between our tastings, some over the top, and other times less pronounced. As it dilutes the flavors quickly wash out, and the finish is not great. Overall, it is an easy-drinking tonic with lots of medium-sized bubbles. However, compared with most of the tonic syrups, it was boring and a bit off-balance. Overall it stands up to gin just fine, though it has an overarching sweetness that may bother some people. On all three of our tastings over the years, a common word was boring. Q tonic works well with vodka too.
Cost: about $0.24 Fl oz. 40 calories per serving.

Basically, we cant imagine many spirits that wouldnt taste good with this tonic water.

Goldberg Japanese Yuzu Tonic
Last but not least is the Yuzu tonic water from Goldberg. I’m not the biggest fan of the standard Indian tonic water from Goldberg, but their Yuzu is outstanding.
The flavors in this tonic water are perfectly balanced. Sweet and sour notes of exotic fruit play perfectly with a balanced bitterness.
Initially, the cooperation between Goldberg and professional Mixologist Jimmy Barrat was planned as a limited edition. But luckily, they saw reason and did not discontinue this gem.
Fast forward five years, the Japanese yuzu tonic is still in production and no longer limited. It’s a perfect match for many Gins, but my preferred combination is the one with the Japanese Roku Gin.

East Imperial Burma Tonic Water
The East Imperial Burma Tonic water certainly is an extraordinary mixer. It doubles the amount of sugar compared to their regular tonic water and increases the amount of quinine severely.
In order to balance the strongly bitter-sweet taste, the brand adds some lemongrass and Thai manao lime to the mix.
The result is a bold and bitter-sweet tonic that works best with London Dry Gin. Pair it with Tanqueray, Beefeater, or Sipsmith VJOP.

For A Floral Gin And Tonic:
Tonic:Fentimans TonicGarnish: Dried hibiscus flowersWhy it works: Infused with a mix of nutmeg, orange peel, coriander and cassia bark, Portobello Roads round, earthy London Dry Gin begs to be mixed with zesty Fentimans tonic, which gets its kick from quinine bark and lemongrass, as well as a hint of cane sugar. That bitter and slightly sweet touch, as well as the citrus and spices in the gin, benefit from the addition of a few dried hibiscus flowers. The hibiscus imparts a lovely rose hue and gives the drink a bitter, floral flavor that channels the refreshing Mexican drink, agua de jamaica.

How To Garnish A Gin And Tonic
A slice of lemon or wedge of lime are the classic finishing touches for a gin and tonic. According to Karttunen, a variation on the classic garnish thats well worth trying is a citrus peel on its own. The peel should first be squeezed gently over the drink to release the essential oils, before stirring in the rest of the peel.
The individual characteristics of a particular gin and tonic can also be highlighted with garnishes such as edible flowers, for a drink that already has a flowery nature, or thyme, for example, for a drink that already has a more herbal profile.

Our Pick For 201: Bradleys Bourbon Barrel Aged Kina Tonic
Fans of tonic syrup, who would have thought that the best way to improve upon a syrup made from wood, would be more wood?Bradleys Kina Tonic was aged in barrels used at one point to house the quite excellent Bourbon Barrel Aged Big Gin. Aged for a minimum of four months, its really mellowed the sweetness and deepened the cinchona bark flavors. Our favorite for 2017 is still our favorite in 2018.
If that doesnt convince you, how about this quote from the review: Incredibly well balanced, with plenty of citrus, spice, and bitterness to make the perfect gin and tonic. One of our favorites, and an excellent pairing for nearly all gins, but especially classic styles with a heavy juniper head.
Jeffreys Not so Plain tonic syrup might have been one of our favorite new tonic syrups of 2017 with a solid bitterness and a pitch of salt which does a lot to elevate the flavor, especially mixed. Many of the elder tonic syrups of the category are still among the best: think Oklahomas Strong Tonic or Tomrs. Overall, weve seen tonic syrups wane a bit in popularity as of late however, that doesnt mean that theres still not several good options on the market today.
