Technically White Claw Is A Malt Beverage
Theres a lot of hype surrounding White Claw, especially as some regard the sparkling beverage as a vodka soda in a can. And while it may resemble your favorite refreshing cocktail from the bar, according to Vine Pair, its definitely not a vodka soda or the newest IPA on the market. But what exactly is it?
According to Vine Pair, this bubbly sensation is a flavored malt beverage. A White Claw rep told Vine Pair its a blend of seltzer water, its gluten-free alcohol base, and a hint of fruit flavor. And its in the same line of beverages as its cousin, Mikes Hard Lemonade, as well as other portable drinks like Smirnoff Ice and wine coolers.
But according to Eater, White Claw just might be more of an upscale version than your everyday malt beverage. Its an upscale, aspirational brand, one that doesnt carry the same trashy, low-budget connotations as other malt liquor beverages like wine coolers, they said. But whatever level of the pedestal you decide to place White Claw on, its still made through a similar process as other malt beverages.
Truly Vs White Claw: The Breakdown
Both drinks come in 5% ABV slim cans. Thats about as much alcohol as a Budweiser. The alcohol used in hard seltzer is usually made from fermented cane sugar.
Aside from flavors, the main difference between these two drinks is their nutritional profiles, although both include just a few simple ingredients, including citric acid and sodium citrate. Both drinks are relatively low in calories, which is a huge appeal in the hard seltzer market. Both drinks contain just 100 calories and two grams of carbs, and they tend to come in slimmer 12 oz cans to differentiate them from beer.
However, these drinks differ in their levels of sugar: Trulys only contains 1g sugar per can, while White Claws contains two grams per can.
Recently, White Claw released a new version of their seltzer called 70 that contains fewer calories, zero carbs, and zero sugar. The rest of their seltzers still abide by their standard nutritional profile.
Hard seltzer is a relatively new product in the alcohol industry. Only in the past few years have seltzers begun to be accepted by drinkers worldwide, but now they are widely lauded for their taste and convenience.
While some companies have attempted to release spiked seltzers in the past, none have gained as much traction as Truly or White Claw. Now, seltzer is a legitimate competitor in the field, and tons of brands are racing to hop on the bandwagon.
Is White Claw Ok To Drink
One popular brand of hard seltzer called White Claw contains 100 calories and 2 grams of carbohydrates per 355 mL can, with an alcohol content of 5 percent. Thats similar to many brands of light beer. Such numbers have led marketers to push hard seltzers as a good choice for health-conscious consumers.

White Claw has swiftly established itself as the most popular harsh seltzer on the market. It was introduced in 2016, now accounts for more than half of the hard seltzer market share. What Is The Best Hard Seltzer For These Recipes
If you want to limit calories and sugars as much as possible then there are two you should use. I did a full hard seltzer taste test and two definitely stood out from the rest!
Truly and Bud Light both have the least amount of sugar and calories so if you want to make a skinny hard seltzer cocktail then those are the ones to you. Truly also has the most natural flavor in my opinion.
If you want the strongest than Natty Light hard seltzer has the most alcohol content. Sure to the purists White Claw will always be the best but I highly suggest going with Trulys for the best all around hard seltzer.
To be honest though if you are on a budget then out of Bud Light, Truly and White Claw, just grab whatever one is cheapest. They all are pretty similar to each other taste wise and you wont really notice much anyways when it is mixed into a cocktail recipe with that said, still use Truly!

If youre not familiar with these babies yet, allow me to introduce you.
There are loads of different brands selling spiked seltzer now, but the general idea is always the same. The drink is essentially boozy sparkling water, flavoured naturally.
Brands like White Claw, FELLR, Great White Hard Seltzer, Saintly, Sunly Seltzer are slinging the refreshing drink in Australia . Is White Claw Healthier Than Beer
With summer around the corner, peak White Claw season will soon be upon us. Ahead of the warmer weather months, the hard seltzer brand recently revealed new flavors, much to the delight of fans everywhere. White Claw, owned by CEO Anthony von Mandl of Mark Anthony Brands, is becoming more popular than beer. This past July, it dominated beverage sales, claiming 60 percent of the hard seltzer market in the U.S. and outselling every craft beer brand, even industry giant Budweiser .
A big factor in Whites Claw success, especially among younger consumers, is its perceived health benefits. Marketed with the tagline Made Pure, a 12-ounce can of the gluten-free hard seltzer boasts just 100 calories and two grams of carbs. In comparison, a 12-ounce bottle of Budweiser contains about 145 calories and 10.6 grams of carbs, as seen in PopSugar. And theres a certain impression among consumers that White Claw is a clean source of alcohol that is less taxing on their bodies, and less filling or bloating than beer or sweet cocktails . But is the spiked seltzer actually healthier than beer?

Hard Seltzer Is Gender
That fanciness has also historically given hard seltzer a certain feminization so often associated with fruity, lower-ABV beverages think wine coolers, sangria, or Smirnoff Ice. But now thats changing.
As one self-identified bro told Business Insider, White Claw is ridiculously good. If Im at a party now and someone offers me an IPA or a White Claw, I definitely take a White Claw I do dude things and get stoked and all that. But I also just feel comfortable saying I like White Claw and that its good.
3 months ago any girl drinking a white claw got their entire existence roasted by the same guys now posting snap stories saying aint no laws when youre drinking claws
In an exploration of hard seltzer and gender for Eater, Amy McCarthy argues that instead of targeting the drink on the basis of sex, hard seltzer is selling a lifestyle one that isnt dependent on gender. Its a drink for doing summertime things: concerts, beaches, and boating. The fact that its considered more upscale than other malt liquor offerings helps sell it as aspirational.
There is a not-insignificant amount of irony when we talk about hard seltzer for all its supposed aspirational qualities, youre still drinking malt liquor out of a can but particularly in the way men talk about it. In consuming a historically feminine-coded beverage, straight men often will counter it with hypermasculine language .
How Can White Claw And White Claw Pure Have The Same Calories And Alcohol But Different Carbs
This is a very good question and there is no very good answer!
The alcohol in both is identical at 14g giving an ABV of 5%. It contributes in and around 95kcal. In the standard White Claw there is then 2g of carbs overall which brings the calorie count up to 100kcal.
However, White Claw Pure has no carbs or sugar. Additionally there is nothing else on the nutritional information that is adding to the calories so where the extra few come from is a mystery.
Perhaps there is a bit of creative accounting going on

In July 2019, inspired by the mantra, aint no laws when youre drinking Claws, , comedian Trevor Wallace released a video satirizing the typical White Claw drinker. He also designed and sold more than 1,000 T-shirts emblazoned with the phrase.
How Many Carbs Are In Normal White Claw Vs Pure
The key difference between the standard White Claw range and White Claw Pure is they have completely removed all the carbs.
How have they done this you ask?
The answer is they have removed the flavouring which is usually achieved with a small amount of carbs and sugar. They then encourage you to use your own fruit to flavour if needed. This of course would add significantly to the sugar and carb load.

If You Drink White Claw Every Night Your Teeth Could Rot
According to a study published in the International Journal of Paediatric Dentistry in 2007, high pH levels found in sparkling water gives the bubbly drink greater erosive potential than orange juice. So what happens when that sparkling water is spiked? Orthodontist Heather Kunen, DDS, MS, told Real Simple that White Claw “creates a more acidic oral environment and makes enamel more vulnerable to wear and attack by bacteria.”
Kunen went on, “When it comes to the consumption of any alcoholic beverage, the biggest concerns I have as a dentist are related to the sugar content of the drink, as well as the dry-mouth side effect of the alcohol itself.” White Claw’s carbonation ” pH levels in the mouth” and can “hinder an ideal salivary flow,” Dr. Kunen explained, which makes teeth more vulnerable to cavities and other negative factors.
The best way to prevent possible teeth rot if you drink White Claw every night? Drink plenty of water drink a glass of water after every alcoholic beverage and then “rinse out your mouth with water after you have finished your drink.”

Experts say that drinking the clear bubbly concoction will actually help you stay in ketosis. Calling White Claw lighter than beer or mixed drinks with a high sugar content, Courtney Dunn, a registered dietitian in San Diego, told Refinery29 the drink “could definitely be a good substitute if you were trying to lose weight or stick within your macro goal.”
Molly Knudsen, M.S., RDN, praised White Claw’s keto benefits to Mind Body Green Health. “Typically, most people following a keto diet keep their carb intake at 50 grams or less a day. So sparing two of those grams for a White Claw every now and then is totally feasible,” she said. Is White Claw Beer
If the alcohol from White Claw is derived from malted grains, is it not then similar to beer? Can it not be considered a version of beer? This is another question popular with White Claw drinkers.
To determine whether White Claw can be considered a beer, let’s refer to the German Purity Law of 1516. According to this law, a beer can be called a beer if it is made from four ingredients: malt, water, hops and yeast.
While White Claw is made from malted grains, which are an ingredient in beer, the White Claw website specifically states that the drink does NOT contain hops, so technically it cannot be considered a beer.
