So go ahead and give it a try.

Whats A Kentucky Mule

The Kentucky mule is a bourbon-based spin on the Moscow mule, a classic cocktail from the 1940s. Apparently it was invented as a ploy to sell more vodka, ginger beer and copper mugs! Whatever the case, this bubbly drink in its special cup caught on like wildfire. The mule is part of a family of cocktails called bucks, cocktails that are made with ginger ale or ginger beer, citrus juice, and liquor. So a Moscow mule is a vodka buck, and a Kentucky mule is a bourbon buck!

The Moscow mule is such a classic that it made the list of International Bartender Associations IBA official cocktails, meaning that it has an official definition. Swap in bourbon for vodka to get the Kentucky version! The ingredients in a Kentucky mule are:

  • Bourbon whiskey
  • Ginger beer

Irish Whiskey and Boston are pretty synonymous, and for a long time so was I.

I have had many memorable experiences with whiskey it is a special spirit. Irish Whiskey is a necessity in any good bar, but in Boston its a centerpiece. Boston has a huge Irish community that is felt throughout the city. Of course with St. Patricks Day right around the corner its only right to shed a spotlight on this wonderful spirit.

A handful of years ago I decided to help move my best friend across the country to Los Angeles, and through our travels we stopped in Memphis, Tenn. It was late and we only had this one night in town. At the first bar we went to, I ordered a Bud Light and a shot of Jameson a standard order in the industry. The bartender instantly called me out and asked where I worked.

Even hundreds of miles away from Boston, the quintessential beer and a shot of whiskey gave me away. I think that speaks volumes to how people in the industry can pick each other out and how whiskey is a special spirit.

Whiskey and St. Patricks Day in Boston is a wild event, pre-COVID of course.

Working on Boylston Street during St. Patricks Day parades unite the entire block and the citys restaurant workers in general. Its a day people in the industry may not look forward to working, but its one we look forward to getting through and adding to the collection of hard work that make it all worthwhile.
