Expert Opinions On Gin And Gluten

Gin most frequently is made from the gluten grains wheat, barley, and rye, along with corn . Gin is distilled, and mostbut not allexperts say distilled spirits made with gluten grains should be safe on the gluten-free diet.

The idea is that even if the alcohol starts out as a mixture of gluten grains, distillation should remove the harmful proteins that cause reactions in celiac disease and gluten sensitivity. Distillation actually vaporizes the pure alcohol, separating it from the non-alcoholic components of the grain mixture used to make that particular type of spirit.

Q: What Should I Look For When Im Buying Gluten

Gluten Free Watchdog recommends the following: 7

  • “Drink only those hard ciders and beers labeled gluten-free. At this time avoid products labeled “gluten removed”.
  • If you are concerned about growth media for yeast, contact the brewer and ask if the medium used to grow yeast is free of wheat, barley, malt, and rye.
  • If the growth medium contains wheat, barley, malt or rye, ask if the yeast is tested for residual gluten using the competitive R5 ELISA. A sandwich ELISA will not adequately detect gluten protein fragments that may be found in fermented products, such as beer and cider.
  • Regardless of testing, it may be prudent at this time to avoid products containing yeast grown on gluten-containing media.
  • If a brewer is unwilling to provide information on yeast it may be best to avoid the product.”

Vodka is a very tricky alcohol for gluten free drinkers. You see, technically, during the distillation process of the vodka, the gluten proteins from wheat based vodkas is supposed to be removed. However, many people have claimed that these vodkas still contain gluten, thus leaving them feeling sick and nauseous. So to be safe, stay away from all wheat based vodkas if you have Celiac disease or a gluten sensitivity.

However, you can still opt for a non-wheat, potato, corn, or grape based vodka which are typically cleared for gluten free consumption.

Here are all the safe gluten free vodka brands that you can purchase and enjoy:

Is Edinburgh Gin Gluten Free?

We use a copper pot still with twin columns. Our still allows us to create a neutral spirit at just over 95% ABV. This 6 times distilled neutral base is what gives Gray Whale Gin it’s ultra clean flavor profile. We then bypass our twin columns, add our botanicals and run a ‘one-shot’ last distillation. This is when the Gray Whale Gin is truly born.

All About Gluten Free Beers

Beer used to never be gluten free. Luckily, many craft brewers and even big breweries like Anheuser-Busch are now offering special gluten free beer. Most are brewed from alternative grains like sorghum and millet, so are considered naturally gluten free beers.

There is another category of beer that is called gluten-removed or gluten-reduced these beers are made from barley in the traditional brew-making style, and are not allowed to be labeled as gluten-free in the U.S., although local state laws may differ when the beers are not crossing state lines.

Experts caution against celiacs and those with gluten sensitivity drinking these beers, since its unclear whether they are truly gluten freeenough to be safe.

One of my articles for Gluten Free & More Magazine covered all the latest entrants to the gluten-free beer market, and another on the issue of de-glutenized or gluten-reduced beers.

I mention this only because there is so much misinformation out there, particularly on the issue of the safety of gluten-reduced beers for celiacs, that I want to emphasize that the information in this article is highly researched. Please feel free to share with others who may be confused about which beers are indeed gluten-free.

Scroll down to the Gluten Removed Beers section to read more about how these beers are treated to reduce gluten and the controversy over whether they are actually safe for celiacs.

Q: What About Labeling Of Alcohol That Is Regulated By The Ttb Is That Different

  • Allergen labeling for alcohol regulated by the TTB is voluntary. 2
  • In 2014, the TTB released an Interim Policy allowing gluten-free claims on product labels if the alcohol is made WITHOUT wheat, barley, rye, or crossbred varieties of these grains OR ingredients derived from these grains . 3
  • BUT producers must ensure that their raw ingredients and finished products are NOT cross-contaminated with gluten.
  • The TTB will NOT allow gluten-free claims on product labels if the alcohol is made with wheat, barley, rye, or crossbred varieties of these grains OR any ingredients derived from these grains.
  • This means that distilled alcohol that has wheat, barley, or rye as a starting material can NOT be labeled gluten-free. This can be confusing to consumers. Regardless of this statement, pure distilled alcohol is considered to be free of gluten protein by consensus of celiac disease experts.

Is Gin Gluten Free Gluten Free Gin Brands

The question Is gin gluten free ? has no a simple answer. It is a really complicated question. Some of the most popular and known coeliac disease organizations and societies have different opinions and answers. Why?

Gin is a spirit that is produced by juniper berries and other plants that are soaked in distillate of grapes or grains. Like many other alcoholic beverages, gin is distilled mainly from wheat, but it can be also distilled from barley, rye, corn and other grains. You know that the distillation process removes enough of the gluten protein in alcohol drinks. However many people with coeliac disease react badly to gin. So the question Is gin gluten free ? is really complicated and there is no a clear answer. You have to be very careful.

Many experts advice people with coeliac disease to consume only alcoholic drinks that are not derived from gluten grains. On the market there is gluten free gin that is made by non-gluten grains. You have to read the labels carefully and ask the manufacturer.

What about gluten free gin brands ?

Fortunately, nowadays the market offers a good selection of gin made by non-gluten ingredients. Here is a short list of some of the most popular brands.

See also gluten free vodka brands and gluten free bourbon. Vodka is more consumed spirit and the market offers a wider range of non gluten vodka than gluten free gin.

Related Guidance On Gluten Detection Methodologies

Hey Dude: Is hard alcohol gluten-free and safe for those with celiac disease?

Currently, the most commonly used methods to detect the presence of gluten are ELISA-based methods, which use antibodies to detect proteins or specific parts of proteins . In general, these methods are sensitive and specific to the analytes they target and can detect gluten in a wide variety of foods. However, these methods may have difficulty detecting and/or quantifying proteins that have been hydrolyzed, fragmented or otherwise structurally altered, since the antibody will no longer react in the same manner if the epitopes have changed significantly.

However, based on the most recent assessment conducted by Health Canada, methods using the Mendez antibodies allow for the detection and quantification of gluten in processed foods. Health Canada will continue to assess analytical methods that are specific to the detection and quantification of gluten in processed foods and will provide further guidance on the applicability of these methods.

Health Canada is continually monitoring the latest scientific evidence on Celiac disease and gluten detection methodologies, and will update its guidance if and when it is required as new information becomes available.

Why Do People React To Gin

As we discussed above, distilled liquorincluding ginis considered by many experts to be gluten-free. But despite this, many people with celiac disease or non-celiac gluten sensitivity still report reactions to distilled spirits made from gluten grains.

So why the disconnect between expert opinion and actual “on the ground” experience? That’s not clear, but there are several possible reasons.

First, distillation may not remove every last bit of gluten, even if it removes enough so that the product meets the standard of less than 20 parts per million. Distillation typically is repeated multiple times to remove “impurities” from the final product, but it’s possible that in some cases, it doesn’t remove all those “impurities.”

Second, it’s possible that smaller fragments of the gluten protein could remain in the final product, even after distillation. Gluten is a large molecule that can be broken down into smaller molecules, but there isn’t much research to show whether people with celiac disease or gluten sensitivity might react to those smaller pieces of gluten.

Third, gin and other spirits made from gluten grains unquestionably are made in facilities and on equipment that process gluten grains. So it’s entirely possible that some gluten cross-contamination creeps in after distillation, as the flavorings typically used in gin are added.

One of the newest alternatives to beer on the gluten free market is seltzer water with a kick. These bubbly beverages are so refreshing!

Made from purified water and infused with natural fresh fruit flavors, these light alternatives to beer and wine contain 6% alcohol derived from fermentation of citrus and sugar. They are wonderful on their own to cool down on a hot summer day, or to use as mixers in any kind of libation. These beverages also come in bottles or cans.

For more information and to find where they are sold, go to SpikedSeltzer.

Another new entrant into this category is White Claw Hard Seltzer. This low calorie libation has no artificial ingredients the alcohol comes from fermented cane sugar.

With 5% ABV and 110 calories, these three White Claw Hard Seltzer flavors are currently available in cans: Natural Lime Black Cherry and Ruby Grapefruit.

I find these to be sweeter than the SpikedSeltzer competition. Thats not a bad or a good thing: if you like sweet, youll love these choose SpikedSeltzer if you prefer a more subtle flavor.

Recent Advances In The Knowledge Base About Gluten Intolerance And Celiac Disease

Individuals affected by Celiac disease have been shown to be capable of tolerating a small amount of gluten in their diet. The amount of gluten to which a person with Celiac disease can be exposed before the gluten will have a negative impact on their health is often referred to as a “threshold level”. The types of studies required to estimate threshold levels are demanding on study participants, given they require invasive diagnostic procedures to look for signs of intestinal damage. For this reason only a small number of these studies have been conducted usually with a limited number of participants.

Health Canada has conducted exposure estimationsFootnote 4 to gluten from grain-containing foods and foods with grain-derived ingredients , taking into consideration the various rates of food consumption by different sex and age groups. These estimates have concluded that if gluten was present at levels not exceeding 20ppm , exposure to gluten would remain below 10 mg per day for all age groups studied. As individuals with celiac disease tend to consume even fewer servings of grain-based products, these estimates further demonstrate that even if all foods labelled as gluten-free food contained 20 ppm gluten, the majority of people with Celiac disease would still be protected . This assessment will be made available in the peer reviewed scientific literature.
