The last time Brandi Carliles music graced Salt Lake City, none of us knew the turn history would shortly take.

On Feb. 8, 2020, Carlile and her band took the stage at Vivint Arena, giving a performance that for many of us would be the last live show wed see for a while or at least without COVID-19 looming in the back of our minds.

On Thursday night, over two years later, Carlile gazed into that same arena with a bittersweet countenance. I thought my career was gonna go away forever, she said, referring to how the live concert experience became a thing of the past during much of the pandemic. You never know how long something like this is going to last. … So Im going to sing every song like its my last time.

And thats exactly what she did.

Backed by her longtime friends and bandmates, twin brothers Phil and Tim Hanseroth, Carlile opened a rousing two-hour-plus set with Broken Horses, a gritty, Western-themed stick it to the man type song that also serves as the title of her recent memoir. For Carlile, Broken Horses represents her journey of coming to terms with herself amid the hurdles life has thrown her way.

Though artists have begun making their way back to touring over the past few months, many of those shows have come with unpredictability and added concerns. Carliles recent shows have been no exception, with the singer/songwriter and her team facing obstacles due to extreme weather and COVID concerns.

It seemed like every show was within 24 hours from getting canceled multiple times, and then a bunch did get canceled, she said. We had two hurricanes, we had wildfire smoke cancel shows. We had heat domes, temperatures above a hundred that are dangerous for everyone. Then we had COVID scares and compliance issues. But it made the shows into huge emotional releases, just because it felt like every single one of them was hard one. Having said that, Im pretty glad to put that gauntlet behind me and go out on the road with a heart full of joy, and feel confident and at peace.

Career Beginnings And Debut

Carlile began her career performing in Seattle music clubs with twin brothers Tim and Phil Hanseroth. In the beginning, Columbia Records signed Carlile in 2004 on the strength of songs she had been recording periodically at home. Released in 2005, Carlile showcased those early songs along with newly recorded tracks in the self-titled album Brandi Carlile. The 2006 re-release by Columbia Records included re-recordings of “Throw It All Away” and “What Can I Say”.

The album earned enthusiastic reviews she was featured on Rolling Stone‘s “10 Artists to Watch in 2005” list, and other “artist to watch” lists by Interview and Paste. In his review of the album, Stephen Thomas Erlewine wrote, “The accolades, combined with cover artwork that captures her at her cutest as if she were a cousin of Rachael Leigh Cook might make some listeners suspicious of Carlile, since the cumulative effect makes her seem like a pretty, prepackaged creation.” He further wrote, “her music is… rich, warm, and seductive, familiar in its form and sound, yet sounding fresh, even original, particularly in how her folky singer/songwriter foundation blends with her art-pop inclinations.” The album peaked at No. 80 on the Billboard 200 and reached No. 1 on the US Folk Albums chart.

It was 10 years ago that Lake Street Dive went viral with a slowed-down take on the Jackson 5s I Want You Back on YouTube. In 2008, Carlile and Tim and Phil Hanseroth established the Looking Out Foundation, a 501 organization to give financial support to and raise awareness of causes in which they believe. The foundation has awarded grants to multiple organizations including Reverb, Honor the Earth, the Bridge School, Children in Conflict, Black Visions Collective, Campaign Zero, the Women’s Funding Alliance, Doctors Without Borders, and the HRC. The Looking Out Foundation has launched numerous grassroots campaigns including Looking Out for the Hungry, Fund Racial Justice, COVID-19 Relief Fund, the IF Project, Fight the Fear, and the Story Campaign.
