What’s The Most Expensive Whiskey

Whisky Is Big Business And No More So Than In 2020 It Seems With Distilleries Temporarily Closing Due To Covid Restrictions And Production Slowing Casks Produced In 2020 Are Predicted To Become Some Of The Rarest And Most Valuable In The Future Believes Cask Whisky Investment Company Whiskey And Wealth Club

Top 10 Most Expensive Alcoholic Drinks In The World

While it will be some years before that prediction is proven true, 2020 has certainly been tumultuous, which could well see it remembered as a significant time for the history of the whisky industry, the company has said.

Predicting the futures big selling drams is an inherently risky business, but what is clear is that the whisky investment has never been more buoyant, with returns typically outpacing wine, art and jewellery, with the value of whisky rising by 582% since 2009, according to Knight Franks 2019 Wealth Report.

Earlier this year, an amateur collector sold a bottle hed bought for just £11 in the 1970s for £2,700 at auction. Michael Amphlett, from Cholsey, Oxfordshire, bought a bottle of 1937 Macallan Single Malt Scotch Whisky in the late 1970s as a present for his father, costing roughly a third of his wages at the time. Amphletts story proves the potential in savvy purchases, if you can hold onto them long enough. But his hammer price pales in comparison to the sale prices achieved by some of the worlds biggest and most sought after whiskies in the world.

While The Macallan is well known for its record-breaking achievements on the world stage, and is predictably well represented in the following line-up, bottles from Japan, and a new distillery founded in 2013 in the Scottish Highlands, are also proving their worth with collectors.

Johnnie Walker Blue Label And Rare Port Ellen

The brand Johnnie Walker has put its onus on distillery spirit and character from Port Ellen on Islay. It brings together this single malt with grain whiskeys from Caledonian and Carsebridge distilleries and rare malt from Oban, Blair Athol, Cragganmore, Dailuaine and Mortlach to create this unique product titled Johnnie Walker Blue label and Rare Port Ellen.

The 70 cl bottle of Johnnie Walker Blue label and Rare Port Ellen with 43.8% abv is a blended Scotch whiskey with a taste of smoky lemons, sweet fruit, and soft spice. At 275 pounds per bottle, it is one of the most expensive Johnnie Walker in the world.

Tasting Notes: Treacle Toffeeaverage Price: $600000

One of the well-known and most expensive scotch in the world is a bottle of The Macallan 1926. The liquor was aged in 1926 for 60 years before it was bottled in 1986.

In April 2019, a single bottle of this scotch was sold for $600,000 in an auction. On that same day, another bottle was released and was purchased by the same man who bought the first one. Thats a whopping $1.2 million in total!

The Macallan has aromatic notes of raisins, dates, prunes, cloves, and treacle toffee. For the palate, it gives off wood, sweetened with treacle toffee and rich dried fruits. This is an exorbitant scotch but worth it for those who can afford it.

Best Sherry Cask Scotch: The Glendronach Allardice

Drizly

Region: Highlands, Scotland| ABV: 46% | Tasting Notes: Dark chocolate, Walnut, Spice.

For at least part of the aging process, many Scottish distilleries use sherry casks in addition to ex-bourbon barrels to add bold, dried fruit and spice flavors to the whiskey. But some distilleries exclusively age their whiskey in these seasoned barrels, like The GlenDronach.

The 18-year-old Allardice may not be the most famous single malt in the world, but it is perhaps one of the most perfect, says Daniel Burns, lead bartender at Elixir Saloon in San Francisco. Its deep sherry notes and flavors of toasted nuts and jammy fruit last seemingly forever on the palate. The 18-year-old whiskey is matured entirely in Spanish Oloroso sherry butts, no color is added, and it delivers one of the best full-flavored sipping experiences.

“If you can get your hands on The GlenDronach 18-year-old Allardice, count yourself lucky. It’s such a beautiful example of what can happen when you age a single malt in sherry casks for nearly two decadeswonderfully rich flavors emerge.” Prairie Rose, Editor

Best Rye: Pikesville Straight Rye

Drizly

Region: Kentucky | ABV: 55% | Tasting Notes: Cinnamon, Vanilla, Oak.

Two styles of rye whiskey dominate the whiskey market these days: rye made from a 95% to 100% rye mash bill and the Kentucky-style mash bill that usually contains just above 50% rye, the minimum legally required to be classified as rye whiskey. Pikesville, which falls into the latter category, was originally made in Maryland and is now distilled in Kentucky by Heaven Hill. Try this in a classic cocktail like the Manhattan.

Pikesville is my favorite rye because it provides a great symphony of flavors from the rye spice, baking spices, the high proof and maturation from the six years in the barrel. The strong taste of cherries, vanilla and baking spices gives it a really fun take on a cherry Coke. Paul Gonzalez, head bartender for the Allegory Bar at D.C.s Eaton Hotel

How Good Is The World’s Most Expensive Whisky

A rare bottle of Scotch whisky hit the headlines this week after it was sold for a world record £1.45m at auction in London.

The Macallan 1926 60-year-old single malt from cask number 263 had been described by Sotheby’s as the “holy grail” of whisky.

At more than £50,000 a dram, you might expect it to taste spectacular.

We tracked down one of the few people in the world to have tried the whisky to give us his verdict.

David Robertson tasted it a number of times between 1994 and 2000 when he was distillery manager and then master distiller at The Macallan.

It’s a great whisky – but I’ve had better Whisky expertDavid Robertson

Mr Robertson, who is now a co-director of whisky experts Rare Whisky 101 , recalls: “My boss and I were lucky enough to have a few samples in the nosing room that we had to ensure were ‘ok’.

“From memory it was an incredibly rich, intense spirit – full of dried fruits, of prunes and dates and tons of incredible spicy notes of cloves, ginger and cinnamon.

“I also recall zesty orange marmalade, hints of peat and smoke, finished with a delicious drying oak tannin from the sherry cask, and waxy, linseed oil and leather notes.”

And his overall verdict?

“It’s a great whisky – but I’ve had better. The Macallan 1979 Gran Reserva, for example, was truly a stunning dram. There are other bottles from other distillers that are at least as good.”
