How Much Tequila Do You Put In A Margarita

For a single margarita, a 1.5-ounce shot of tequila is standard. It is typically equal to the total volume of the other two ingredients . For instance, the classic margarita formula is three parts tequila, two parts triple sec, and one part lime juice. This is adjusted to taste, pouring more triple sec for a sweeter margarita or extra lime to increase the tartness.

When sizing the margarita up to a pitcher, simply increase the ingredients and keep them in proportion. For example, in the typical half-gallon pitcher, you would combine 3.75 cups tequila, 2.5 cups orange liqueur, and 1.25 cup lime juice. This makes 7.5 cups, leaving room in the pitcher for you to adjust the three ingredients to taste, add a sweetener without increasing the alcohol, or chill it with ice. The margarita is a strong drink, so dilution and small servings are important.

Cava de Oro Extra Anejo Tequila

Price: £46 |

Sophie Decorbecq, the creator of this smooth, clean and ever so slightly smoky tequila, was a chemist in the cognac industry before upping sticks to follow her passion for tequila. This one is double distilled in traditional pot stills, then matured in oak casks originally used for bourbon. That gives it a delicate complexity: on the nose, you get oak, vanilla and cocoa, while taste-wise its a rich and balanced combination of dried fruit, fresh herbs and vanilla.

Its light for a reposado possibly too light for some but its unique combination of flavours saw it take the gold medal at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition 2009. Great for sipping, and delicious for margaritas.

Is Don Julio Better Than Patron

Don Julio Blanco is the best tequila, even when compared to Patron Silver. It has a lemon, grapefruit, and agave aroma that you can drink neat or on the rocks. On the other hand, Patron silver smells pleasant because of the agaves scent, but it lacks depth and taste complexity compared to the Don Julio Blanco.

Is Patron Silver a good sipping tequila? Any of Patróns tequilas, particularly the aged tequilas, are enjoyable right out of the bottle. Pour a shot into a rocks glass and sip it slowly for a pleasant experience. The silver tequila makes a nice straight shot and is a good choice for other tequila shot recipes.

  • Best Blanco/Silver: Espolòn Blanco.
  • Best Reposado: Olmeca Tezòn Reposado Tequila.

Budget Bottles For Shots And Sips

Making tequila is not a quick process. Agave plants take seven to 12 years to reach maturity, and once harvested, they need to be roasted, distilled, and left to rest for months to years depending on the style. While many high-quality tequilas come with a steep price tag, you can certainly find bottles to fit your budgetand not all are strictly for shooting. Several brands produce excellent inexpensive tequilas suitable for sipping and making cocktails, such as margaritas, sangritas, and bloody marias. We researched top brands to find premier bottles for sipping straight, mixing drinks, and, yes, taking shots.

Here are the best cheap tequilas.

Made in Jalisco, this 100 percent agave tequila rests for 40 days before it’s bottled and sent to thirsty drinkers. This results in a crisp tequila that works particularly well in cocktails, and the fact that its one of the best-selling brands in Mexico confirms that. Tasting notes of roasted agave, lemon, and honey pair particularly well in a paloma. The name El Jimador tips a hat to the farmers, the Jimadors, who lovingly grow and harvest all the agave in Jalisco, Mexico.

Corralejo 1821 Extra Anejo

Corralejo is one of the few brands thats permitted to distill tequila outside of Jaliscotheyre located in the state of Guanajuato. Their bottles are also among the tallest in the tequila category, with this expression outdoing even Don Julios towering 1942 vessel. The tequila itself is noteworthy as well. Its distilled twice in copper pot stills, using the centuries-old Charentais method traditionally used to make cognac, before aging in American oak barrels for 36 months. It does have a gentle fruitiness reminiscent of a brandy, mingled with a dry herbaceousness and a surprisingly vibrant agave presence, given all that wood aging. The only problem with this tequila is finding a shelf tall enough to store the bottle.

Storywood Speyside 14 Aejo: Best Aejo Tequila

Price: £50 |

This luxury sipping tequila is the best añejo we’ve tried. Left for 14 months in scotch whisky casks, it has slightly sweet toffee notes balanced with a rich, oaky flavour. Unlike some longer-aged tequilas, it’s complex, while maintaining a smooth, easy-drinking finish. This makes it ideal both for sipping neat and for use in cocktails, as those delightful flavours still burst through even when mixed with juice.

Don’t just take our word for it, though: the Speyside 14 Añejo won double gold in the San Francisco World Spirits Competition and nabbed a highly recommended medal in the 2020 Ultimate Spirits Challenge, too. It’s also just one of five in the Storywood range and not the only one to win an award.

Best White: Arette Blanco Tequila

I like tequilas that have a strong family history and choose to do the right thing for the land and the people, says Dean Hurst, beverage director for Datz Restaurant Group. Each bottle is made with care in the town of Tequila, right outside Guadalajara. The brand is still run by the Orendain brothers, who are descendants of some of the oldest tequila producers in the country. That said, the tequila still holds the same quality it did generations ago, with flavors of jackfruit, lime zest, and green pepper.

Give your margarita some punch with Arette Blanco, a steal for a cheaper tequila, says Hurst. He also recommends the distillerys reposado because it’s a great sipper and adds complexity to the paloma cocktail.

Hope Ray, a bartender at The Holler in Bentonville, Arkansas, reaches for Agavales Blanco because it often runs under $20, so you cant go wrong with this in your home bar. The budget bottle clocks in at a spicy 110 proof, so it’ll add a little heat in each sip. Because it’s on the lower end of the price scale, it’s not as elegant in cocktails as some other options are.

That said, it makes a great margarita and an easy shooter, says Ray. If you want a crowd-pleasing bottle, this is the one. Consider putting it in the freezer before enjoying. By chilling it down, the cold temperatures will balance out the higher-proof burn of making shots with this tequila.

Estes wanted the best, so he teamed with the best. Tequila Ocho Plata 2017 Single Estate Los Patos smells of peaches, bananas, lemongrass and straw. The list of flavors in the mix includes chamomile, rosemary, peppermint, avocado and green olives. It opens and develops in the glass like a fine wine.

La Cava De Don Samuel

From the small highland town of Atotonilco in Jalisco comes this extraordinary line of tequila.

“Don Samuel was one of the biggest commercial entrepreneurs in the town,” said Bonilla. “In 2007 he created a special production of around 10,000 bottles of Reposado tequila. This reserve is so unique, and there are not that many on the market. It must be tried.”

Cdigo 1530 Rosa Blanco

Código 1530 Rosa Blanco is a real tequila with three times more agave than any tequila brand. They do not add any additives or sweeteners to their tequila. Using more agaves on the tequila will provide natural sweetness and a fuller flavor.

The harshness you usually find in a Blanco is non-existent since they rested this Blanco for at least a month inside French white Oak Napa Cabernet barrels. It tasted like aged tequila regardless of being a Blanco. They priced this tequila at around $64, which is reasonable considering the quality.

Best For Margaritas: Casa Dragones Blanco

Region: Jalisco, Mexico | ABV: 40% | Tasting Notes: Herbaceous, Green peppercorn, Anise

Instead of sipping this high-end tequila, Volfson recommends trying it in a margarita. A margarita is about the relationship of three ingredients: tequila, triple sec, and limes,” she says. This tequila from Maestra Tequilera Bertha González Nieves gives off flavors of soft herbaceousness and grassy garden crispness, green peppercorn and fennel seed, cardamom, anise seed, and a bit of juiciness, which Volfson feels mingle well with the bright cirtus character of the triple sec and lime juice.

“The layers of orange blossom in Casa Dragones, along with the orange in the triple sec, brings together the drinks fruitinessthe recipe doesnt need as much lime juice as others, so it showcases the spirits with each other. Yana Volfson, beverage manager at Cosme and ATLA restaurants in New York

What’s The Difference Between Tequila Varieties

Stock Up on These Tequilas If You Want to Impress...Everyone?

Tequila is made from the Blue Weber agave, a specific species of the plant that’s grown in Jalisco, Mexico and characterized by a particularly sweet flavor. It’s prized because of its history within the origins of tequila making, but also because of its pleasant taste, high natural sugar content, and fast growing time.

Legally, this specific species of agave only needs to contribute to 51% of a bottles total alcohol content for it to be considered tequila. The rest can be a blend of other assorted agaves or, often, other spirits entirelylike grain alcoholthough spirits specialists usually recommend choosing bottles with 100% pure agave for a smooth taste minus the crippling hangover the next day. If you’ve ever suffered a particularly debilitating headache post-tequila, it’s likely you were sipping on a tequila that has been mixed with some kind of flavoring or colorant like sugar syrup or caramel coloring to fake genuine barrel-aging. Commonly known as joven, or gold tequila,” these mixto varieties blended with artificial additives are generally no bueno if you actually want to savor your tequila experience.

Another important distinction between types of tequila is the way the spirit has been aged, and how long it has been aged for. American and French oak barrels are the standard for tequila aging, though distillers also like to experiment with whiskey, cognac, or wine barrels to infuse their tequila with a mixed flavor profile that has more spice or texture.
