In addition to these tools, youll need just five ingredients to make this mojito pitcher recipe. You might have some of em on hand already, too:

  • Fresh mintyoure going to need lots and lots and lots of this, so I hope the mint plant currently taking over your garden is ready to rock and roll
  • White rumwhile a spiced rum or a dark rum would also be delicious in this pitcher drink, mojitos are traditionally made with white rum
  • Limes or freshly squeezed lime juiceI purchase the squeezed kind from the refrigerated section at the grocery store. Its with the pre-chopped fruit and is worth the splurge. However, you can purchase limes and squeeze em yourself.
  • Simple syrupyou can make it at home or you can purchase it from the store or online.

Notes On The Ingredients

Due to its simplicity, it calls for good quality ingredients. And thats exactly one of the key points that can make a really good cocktail.

Mojitos, unlike other cocktails, do not have any crazy or difficult-to-get ingredients. .

Rum The traditional recipe calls for white rum, and in my opinion, it works best. It has a light flavor without any strong spices added to it, unlike golden rums. However, feel free to use it if thats what you prefer.

Fresh lime juice Although bottle lime juice is more convenient, the flavor is just not the same. Please avoid using it and buy a bunch of fresh limes from the farmers market.

Fresh mint You can use mint or spearmint. Just make sure it is fresh.

Sugar Traditionally mojitos had sugar cane juice in them. But since is not that easy to find, you can use regular white sugar. You can also use brown sugar.

Sparkling component My recommendation is to use club soda, which is unsweetened, so it will not add any more sugar to the final cocktail. Also, you can use lime soda if you want to, but I prefer to use club soda. Avoid using tonic soda .

Ice Youll need some big ice cubes for the pitcher, and also crashed ice or smaller cocktail ice cubes for each glass.

Quick Tips And Tricks For Making The Best Mojitos

  • Prep your ingredients before mixing the pitcher. This means juicing your limes and making simple syrup beforehand.
  • Double or triple the recipe! While this Mojito Pitcher recipe makes six drinks, you might be hosting friends who want more than one drink. If so, make a second pitcher and leave out the club soda until its go time.
  • Purchase good lime juice or squeeze your own. The shelf stable bottled stuff wont cut it for this Mojito Pitcher.
  • Add extra mint for garnish! Not only is it beautiful, but it adds a lovely scent as you sip!
  • Dont over muddle the mint. Mint is a delicate herb, and the point of muddling is to get the leaves to release their oils, which provides flavor in the mojito. If you muddle them too much, they could become bitter.
  • Make the mint flavor extra strong by making mint simple syrup. To do this, follow the instructions on how to make simple syrup and throw in a bunch of mint when the sugar has dissolved. Let it steep for 30-45 minutes before straining the mint out.

What Is Mint Simple Syrup

Simple syrup is a liquid sweetener made by dissolving sugar into water. Its popularly used in mocktails, cocktails and hot beverages as it more evenly sweetens the drink than sugar on its own.

The traditional simple syrup recipe is made from equal parts water and sugar. It can also be made with a higher ratio of sugar when it needs to be stored for longer.

As simple syrup has a neutral taste and is made by boiling water and sugar, its easy to add different flavors. Mint is an obvious choice as it is the base of many drinks and easily imparts its flavor.

This mint syrup recipe uses the same principle of equal parts water and sugar plus equal parts of mint.

Why I Love This Recipe:

My first experience with a homemade mojito was less than desirablethe person who was mixing it didnt measure, and there was a lot of rum and too little everything else.

This Mojito Pitcher does what that first mojito didnt doit strikes a beautiful balance of sweet, citrus and herband its something that is quite simple to make at home.

This Mojito Pitcher recipe is balanced and smoothits got light flavors and isnt too sweet, which is important to me since I dont like saccharine sweet cocktails. Its also refreshing, which translates well to hot days.

This is also the kind of pitcher drink I want to have at a party because pitcher drinks are the best when entertaining. You mix it all up once, then you and your guests get to enjoy it until its gone!

Helpful Tips And Tricks

  • Use fresh limes not the concentrated stuff.
  • Quality counts. With only five ingredients, each one is super important. Just like the lime juice, you want to be sure to use a quality rum that you actually like the taste of. Some favorites include Bacardi Superior or Cana Brava.
  • Avoid over-muddling. Gently, yet firmly, press the limes and mint with your muddler and gently twist. Were not trying to rip the mint to shreds, that just makes your mojito bitter.
  • Add some fruit for a fun twist.

What Rum Is Best To Use

I am not saying your rum has to be expensive. Not at all! After all, the bartenders masked the taste of bad quality rum when making a mojito in the past, so you can get away with a decent white rum. But don’t use a spiced rum, because the spices crash with the freshness of citrus and mint!

I usually use a Bacardí Carta Blanca as in the photos here , or Havana Club Anejo Blanco. To site Bacardí’s own website, a Bacardí Carta Blanca is smooth and subtle with notes of almond and vanilla, it doesn’t dominate like gin or disappear like vodka. • rumrunnerREVIEW:July 1, 2013

FANTASTIC recipe! I don’t always have good luck making large batches of our favorite cocktails as they seem to always be better made individually. We were having a large group over and I didn’t want to be making drinks all day so I tried this. The pitcher of drinks tasted just as good as if I’d made individual mojitos

  • VickiREVIEW:March 21, 2012

What an easy, straightforward recipe. I served this at a birthday party last night and everyone RAVED about it as the best mojitos they ever drank. I’ve never had a mojito so I was at a loss to know what they should taste like but I had LOTS of mint in the garden so thought why not? I used less lime juice in the third pitcher but no one seemed to notice. I think the key was the fresh mint . I made up two pitchers ahead of time, put them in the fridge, and added the club soda and ice when guests arrived.
