Variations: Rum Screwdriver And More
Taste a Brass Monkey made with the correct ratio, and its refreshing and easy to drink with a very subtle fruity finish from the rum. But in all honesty? Its not one of our top choices when it comes to cocktails. It lacks complexity and doesnt make the most of the dark rum. Here are some ideas for ways to vary this drink:
- Rum and orange juice cocktail: This Rum and Orange Juice drink pairs rum and OJ with lime and grenadine: its a much more balanced and interesting drink
- Rum Screwdriver: Pair 2 ounces rum and 4 ounces orange juice: its a more standard spin on the classic Screwdriver

It’s matured in charred-oak barrels for anywhere from a few months to a decade or more and as a result picks up bold flavor and all of its color. Even though it has tropical roots, the warming spirit is just the thing for a cold evening.
So give dark rum a chance by fixing these five concoctions from top mixologistsyou’ll thank us later. Cheers!
Three Dots And A Dash
This cocktail is an absolute tiki classic. Invented by Donn Beach, the name means Victory in morse code. Its also the namesake of the incredibly popular tiki bar in Chicago.
It contains three types of rum, so might be a tough one to make at home. But take a closer look at the garnish: three maraschino cherries and a piece of pineapple. Its a symbol of the drinks namesake.

The Best Bottles Of Dark Rum
If youve consumed alcohol at any point in your life especially on a beach in a Caribbean location more likely than not youve tasted rum. However, rums sipping pleasures go much deeper than acting as a base for fruity, sugar-ridden punches and mixed drinks. In fact, rum comes in various forms white, spiced, and the all-too-forgotten dark.
Rum is technically identified as a distilled beverage made from sugarcane byproducts or sugarcane juice. Dark rum, however, is seen as the purest expression of one of the most widely used sugarcane byproducts, molasses. The rum is then aged in oak barrels. Various styles have emerged, including the highly popular Demerara style, which was the sweet base for Navy rums widely consumed in the 1900s. Here are six of our favorite dark rums to get you up to date on just how awesome distilled sugarcane can be on its own.

Are There More Bacardi Cocktails
Cocktails such as the mojito, daiquiri, and Cuba libre have a connection to the Bacardi brand as well. Some stories attribute the rum to the original creation of these drinks, a scenario that is possible considering the rums popularity. It was just as prevalent then as it today, and its feasible that bartenders picked up a bottle of Bacardi when they first poured these now-classic drinks. Other signature cocktails from Bacardi include the commodore and dulce de leche.

What To Mix With Spiced Rum
Back in the early days of rum, infusing it with spices was the easiest way to make the raw spirit palatable. Pretty much any edible plant could make its way into local mixes back then. Today, things are a little more consistent, and vanilla, cinnamon and clove are usually the main flavor components, along with things like nutmeg, orange peel, allspice and cloves. With all of those rich flavors already present in the rum, its easy to find a mixer that works. Here are the seven best things to mix with spiced rum.

Bacardi Lime Frozen Daiquiri
Although Daiquiri originate in Cuba, Cocktail lore attributes Rum sours creation to Jennings Cox, American mining executive working near Daiquiri, Cuba at the turn of the 20th century. Exact details of drink origin are as cloudy as blended Cocktail but the recipe has stood the test of time. Over the years, countless drinkers have succumbed to the charms of simple Daiquiri both within Cuba and beyond the Caribbean countrys shores. Ernest Hemingway, no stranger to good drink, imbibe so many double Bacardi Daiquiris at El Floridita in Havana that the prolific writer acquired the nickname Papa Dobles and inspired a variant known as Hemingway Daiquiri. After making the short journey from Cuba to the United States, Daiquiris popularity spread across America. Drinks sweeter, slushier frozen counterpart may have overshadowed the original, but true Cocktail connoisseurs prefer the gentile charm of the original concoction.

About Rum Punch A Little History
So I really love to dance Zumba and SocaFit, and many of my classmates and teachers are from the Caribbean islands.
Every party we have, someone brings their version of rum punch. And there are thousands of versions. When I decided to make my own version, I wanted to know more about the history of rum punch.
Basically, when the English were sailing around the world being jerks as part of the British East India Company, they drank a lot of beer on the ships.
Like 11 pints a day per person. And, they were on the ships for a long time.

Towards the end of their trips, the beer was rancid and flat. On the return home, they needed a new alcoholic beverage to drink- so they used what they found at their destination.
In the East Indies and the Caribbean, those ingredients were rum, fruit, and spices. a mix was made for the journey home, and rum punch was born.
Today rum drinks are a popular part of mainstream culture throughout the Caribbean islands, and there are as many rum punch recipes as there are families.

How To Pair Rum With Food
While many consumers may enjoy a cocktail before dinner, or spirits neat as a digestive after a meal, few will instinctively pair them with food. I talked to a few rum-savvy executives in the restaurant and hospitality business to get the skinny of how this delicious tropical liquor can also be paired with savory dishes.
As a general rule, most chefs prefer a pairing of equals or opposites when it comes to food and drink synergies. The lush fattiness of foie gras works well with Frances great dessert wine Sauternes. Another pairing of similar flavors might be a grassy New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc with green vegetables like artichokes or asparagus. A pairing of opposites might include a broad, oaky Chardonnay with an acidic ceviche.
So, heres a primer on how to do the same with different styles and age statements of rum.
What Grows Together Goes Together
Chefs have long used rum to flavor sauces and crepes. Kevin Hildebrandt, the executive chef at the Courtleigh Hotel in Kingston, uses it in dishes like shrimp scampi, fish chowder and bread pudding. When the rum is in the food it automatically creates a flavor bridge to also pair it, as a drink, with that dish.

Some of these pairings were tried and tested at the first Annual Jamaica Rum Festival, held in Kingston last weekend. Appleton white rums were served with both spicy pea and seafood soups.

You can fill a highball glass with ice cubes and add the rum and tonic water and shake well after you squeeze the lime wedge in. You can then garnish with a slice of lime. What Is Rum Punch
So, I did a little research on the origin of rum punch. Apparently, the word punch comes from a Sanskrit word that means five, as the drinks were originally made with five ingredients alcohol, sugar, lemon juice, water, and tea or spices.
The drink eventually made its way from England to the West Indies where it took on the more tropical notes that we know today. Native island fruits lent themselves perfectly to rum punch their natural sweetness has always been a perfect match for most kinds of rum.
When it comes to making rum punch, keep this rhyme in mind: One of Sour, Two of Sweet, Three of Strong, Four of Weak. This means punch is made with: one part lime juice, two parts sweetener, three parts rum, and four parts water. This doesnt mean that we have to follow this rhyme exactly, but it does help to get a rough idea of how much of everything youll need. You can always adjust the amounts to your own tastes to make the drink stronger or weaker.
What Goes Well With Rum
Cola, pineapple juice, coffee, lime juice and lemonade all go well with rum. Several fruit juices, liqueurs, flavored sodas and other liquors pair well with the popular spirit.
The mojito and the daiquiri are two of the most popular cocktails that are made with rum. The mojito is made by muddling sugar, mint leaves and club soda in a highball glass. Lime juice and rum are added to the glass, then it is stirred before being topped with ice and club soda.
The daiquiri is made by pouring rum, simple syrup and lime juice into a cocktail shaker, shaking it, straining it and then pouring the drink into a chilled martini glass.
