Experts Guide: Herradura Tequila (Silver, Reposado, Añejo, Ultra, Selección Suprema)

Currently, Teremana Blanco retails for $30 and a barrel-rested Reposado sells for $33. The company launched in March. My goal with the Teremana brand was to create a tequila expression that was ultra premium quality, absolutely delicious to the taste and most importantly affordable for everyone, Johnson continued.

A margarita made with this tequila is never the same. The margarita has more agave flavor and is unparalleled because of its 45-day aging process, which gives it a hint of oak and color. Notes on this 40% abv 80 proof: light straw in the eye. A slight woody note is present as well as notes of green agave and cooked agave.

Choosing A Tequila Train: Jose Cuervo Express Vs Tequila Herradura Express

There are actually two different tequila trains from Guadalajara, one run by Jose Cuervo and the other by Herradura. On the surface, they seem similar. They both depart on Saturdays, visit tequila distilleries in the same region, and are even the same price. But there are some notable differences to be aware of when deciding between the two tequila trains.

  • Distillery: Perhaps most obvious, is that the trains go to two completely different distilleries. Cuervos La Rojena distillery receives good reviews, but expect it to be busier and more touristic than Casa Herradura.
  • Departure time: The Cuervo Express departs earlier in the morning compared to Herradura .
  • Lunch included: The Herradura Express includes a full 4-course lunch with drinks, while the Cuervo Express lunch is not included. Instead, you are allotted a few hours to find a lunch spot on your own during the Cuervo Express.
  • Train both ways: The Herradura Express has a train that goes both ways to/from Guadalajara, whereas the Cuervo Express travels by train one way and by bus the other way.

Riding The Tequila Train Through Mexicos Agave Fields To Casa Herradura

We embarked on the tequila train on a hot day in May for what was only its 6th ever journey from Guadalajara. As we boarded, it was evident that the first class train cars were brand-spankin new. The leather seats, the wide windows, and polished bar top all gave off luxury vibes. It was a refreshing treat for us after having spent the first half of our year backpacking across Latin America.

It didnt take long after getting situated that we were greeted first by an English-speaking guide and then by an attendant. The guide loaded us up with information about the day while the attendant filled us full of fresh squeezed orange juice, coffee, and a mid-morning sandwich snack.

The next thing we knew, we were moving! We rolled out of the station right on time for our 10:00 departure and it was such a pleasant ride out of Guadalajara! The trains route shifted through some rough neighborhoods and into trendy suburbs. But in both areas, we continued to receive wide smiles and waves as we rolled through town.

As we left Guadalajara, our coffees & OJ were soon replaced with cocktails. We dont normally drink tequila at 10:30 in the morning but when on a tequila train, why not? It was a refreshing grapefruit juice & tequila cocktail that had a slight spice to it. What a delicious way to start the day!

    Boozing Back To Guadalajara

And while the fun at Casa Herradura had concluded, we still had a two-hour train journey to complete the entire experience. The bartender was ready with an entirely new series of cocktails to dazzle us with on the ride back. And who are we to say no?

A flurry of cocktails continued to be delivered to our seats as the train chugged back to Guadalajara. We enjoyed our first margaritas of the day. Herraduras version included lemongrass sprouting out from a highball glass. Yet perhaps our favorite cocktail was a fun & refreshing rendition of gin & tonic, garnished with a rosemary spring and cucumber slice. And yes, of course, the gin was replaced with tequila.

Tequila shots, with salt and a lime wedge, are part of our collective drinking unconscious. So much so, it feels like theres no other way to enjoy tequila. But expert bartenders say that you should allow the flavors of your tequila to open up, like a fine wine or scotch. *As a side note and a correction to my original article, sulphuric acids are only used if a difusor facility does not use autoclaves for hydrolysis. All of the facilities that I have visited or seen pictures of, do in fact, have an autoclave to convert the starches to sugar. If sulphuric acids were being used, there would be lines labeled as such running to the difusors. I have looked for, and have never seen such lines since I have learned about this *While the aguamiel was sweet like agave nectar, it was very bitter and not very enjoyable on my palate. Compared to cooked agave from an earthen pit, horno, or autoclave, this is a major disappointment and the first step in realizing what is wrong with agave spirits produced from difusor technology.hours***I have recently learned that “organic” only applies to the agave, not the production process…Producers and NOM’s of those who use difusors, and brands that are made at that distillery interesting video

Mexican 35% ABVNose: Some spiciness, dusty minerals, agave and a vegetable presence- celery?Flavors: Somewhat muddled flavors. Vanilla and sweetness, pepper heat with accompanying bitter note, cinnamon. Finish is much like the nose and flavors, not horrid, but not much to distinguish itself from a host of middle of the heap tequilas.

Surprisingly hot and bumpy for a triple distilled Blanco, I was expecting less flavour and personality. I think this is great for making cocktails & margs, it will stay present with other flavours present.

Alcohol and agave mixed overpowers the flavor and finish

    • 72Rating

Borderline watery in the mouth, this blanco has very little viscosity or oil. It does have some good basic flavor elements in roast agave and white pepper along with some alcohol. Finish is short and slightly sweet. I used about a liter of this and made an jalapeño infusion that is really good.

    • 62Rating

Mild aroma of agave, alcohol and citrus. Strong alcohol flavor dominates the agave, black pepper and citrus zest. Alcohol , pepper and minerals are present in a weak finish.

    • 76Rating

This has changed a lot over the years, and is inconsistent from batch-to-batch. I am getting cake batter and vanilla on the aroma and flavor. Theres also an off note to the aroma that is either too much tails in the distillation or theres some diffuser product mixed in. Some artificial sweetener on the finish.

Mild antiseptic smell, slight citrus taste, long dry finish.

Reflections On This Tequila Train Excursion

As we rolled back into the Guadalajara station with a head full of tequila, we attempted to reflect on how awesome this booze-filled day was. We expected to have fun, and we most definitely did. Perhaps most surprising, was how much we managed to learn along the way too. Throughout the excursion, we felt like we had been converted from casual tequila drinkers to tequila aficionados.

We had practiced using coa to hack away at agave by a jimador. Before this excursion, we didnt even know what those words meant. We were educated about the complicated distilling process and the secrets of making the perfect blend of tequila. And we learned all about the symbolic Herradura horseshoe and why it is not traditionally upside-down for good luck. We dont want to give everything about this tour away. So if you want to know why, youll just have to hop aboard the Herradura Tequila Express and find out!

Tequila Is Nothing More Than Cactus Juice: False

While the agave plant has pointy needles and sharp leaves, its really more of a succulent than a cactus. Fun fact: Agaves are more closely related to the Joshua Tree than that prickly desert dweller we know so well. True tequila must be 100% agave, and the best brands harvest the agave when its at least a decade old.

Review: Milagro Tequila Select Barrel Reserve Silver

60 bucks is a lot to pay for a silver tequila, so it better be good, right?

Well, even if its not, it helps if its a work of art. Milagros Select Barrel Reserve line come in some of the most gorgeous bottles Ive ever seen, amazingly crafted with a glass rendition of an agave plant blown right into the base. It really has to be seen to believe, and once you do youll understand the reason for the plastic, padded case the bottle comes in.

Fortunately Milagros SBR Silver has the legs to go the distance with its looks. Im not a huge fan of Milagros standard bottlings, but SBR is a significant improvement, toning down the bite of standard Milagro considerably. Here, however, though aged for 30 days in oak, it shows an awfully strong charcoal character, perhaps the result of too-aggressive filtering. Agave is huge here, with an herbal punch and a touch of mellow caramel on the finish. Still has some kick to it, though, before fading into that charred finale.

A very worthwhile tequila, but I regret to inform youll find better tasting tequilas for less money though theyll be nowhere near as pretty.

    • Nose: Toffee, vanilla, oak and agave.
    • Palate: Sweet and smooth full of vanilla, oak, leather, tobacco, agave and a faint smoky taste.

Seleccion Suprema is amazing and the best Herradura Tequila. One of the smoothest and most flavorful, deep and complex tequilas I have ever had. Herradura offers a nice creamy body with a gentle mouthfeel, smooth full of incredible flavors with a long pleasantly warm finish making it my favorite extra añejo tequila.

Seleccion Suprema earned 94 points at the Ultimate Spirits Challenge in 2014, where it was awarded as the Best Extra Añejo Tequila in the World.

Is It Cheaper To Buy Tequila In Mexico

In Mexico that includes good tequila for a good price. For a whole lot of brands, you can expect to pay half what you would in the USA. So prices are good, but some items are not as cheap as in poorer countries like Guatemala, Nicaragua, or Bolivia, for instance. Nobody beats the Mexican prices for tequila though.
