It only makes sense that you have to buy a case. What are they going to do with the other bottles when you order some obscure product that no one else wants.

The Story Begins Over 100 Years Ago

The history of Japanese whisky cannot be told without the mention of Masataka Taketsuru, founder of Nikka Whisky. Along with Suntory founder Shinjiro Torii, Taketsuru is considered one of the founding fathers of Japanese whisky. Taketsurus story and that of the Japanese whisky category as a whole began in 1918, when he traveled to Scotland for university.

Best For Highball: Suntory Toki

Region: Japan | ABV: 43% | Tasting Notes: Citrus, smoke, apple

“I really enjoy Suntory Toki Whisky,” says Darnell Holguin, co-founder of The Silver Sun Group and beverage partner at New York’s Las’ Lap. “Toki, which means time in Japanese, has a blend of some of the best that Suntory makes. It has notes of pink grapefruit, almonds and a light vanilla finish. Just mix some with sparkling water and a squeeze of lemon, and you’ll have yourself a yummy Highball.”

From The Barrel Highball Recipe

The highball is a Japanese whisky cocktail classic. From the Barrel makes a strong version of this drink.

Its best to use a chilled highball glass and ice-cold soda. Stir the whisky over ice and strain into the chilled glass full of ice. Next, tilt the glass and pour the soda down the side. You may give this drink a quick, light stir, but it isnt necessary.

A standard pour would use 1.5 ounces of From the Barrel. A 2-ounce pour works too, but be warned that this makes a dangerously boozy highball!

Mineral water like Perrier or Saint-Geron is recommended for this cocktail.

Finish the Nikka highball by expressing a lemon peel over the top of the drink and rub it around the rim of the glass. This peel then makes a great garnish.

The forest fragrance version of the Japanese highball adds another element of complexity. For this cocktail, take a cluster of mint tops, smack them against your palm, rub them on the glass, and finally place them into the ice at the top of the drink.

The Best Bottles Of Japanese Whisky You Can Actually Find At Every Price

Nikka Whisky Black aged 8 years old Japanese Whisky Review #193 from WhiskyJason

Japanese whisky distilleries say that demand has far outpaced supply over the last few years, resulting in less aged whisky and higher prices. Complicating things further, some disreputable companies are reportedly sourcing whisky from other countries and labeling it Japanese whisky.

To that end, its helpful to get an overview of the Japanese whisky landscape. There are two main companies producing Japanese whisky. Suntory, owner of three distilleries, is the largest. Nikka is next in line, with two equally distinctive distilleries. There are also several other smaller operations making Japanese whisky some are even distilling rice whisky, which many regard as essentially over-proof shochu.

In addition to their single malts, Nikka and Suntory produce very high-quality blends. In fact, blending is considered to be the most important step in the production of Japanese whisky. Some distilleries like Yamazaki use enough stills of different shapes and sizes to literally make dozens of different distillates, which are then aged in countless barrel types before being blended into the final product.

Ready to take on this complex, evolving category? Here are 15 bottles of Japanese whisky to try now, if you can find them.

Best Overall: Yamazaki 12 Year Old

Region: Japan | ABV: 43% | Tasting Notes: Fruit, clove, orange

Suntorys Yamazaki 12 Year Old could be considered the core expression of the brands single malt lineup . It is probably the best known Suntory whisky and was once pretty easy to find . This is a floral and fruity single malt reminiscent of scotch but in a style that is very much its own. All in all, it’s an excellent starting point for those wishing to explore the category of Japanese whisky.

The 9 Best Japanese Whiskies Available In The Us

In the last few years, Japanese whisky has made huge strides on the global stage. While it was once a forgotten country for spirits, Japan is home to some of the best distilleries in the world, including Suntorys Yamazaki Distillery, distiller of Jim Murrays 2015 World Whisky of the Year. But thats all stuff at the highest levels of whisky awards. What about us commoners who kick back with a readily-available bourbon? What should we be looking for and, maybe more importantly, what can we reasonably expect to find on our shelves? We took some time to find out.

Yamazaki 18 Year Old

This whisky has won over 17 awards including gold medals at the International Spirits Challenge in 2007, 2010, 2012, 2013 and 2014. Its a smooth whisky with a spicy finish thats packed with notes of toffee, raisins and coffee, and its aged like some of your favorite scotches. Sipping this, youd think there was some kind of ancient migration of Scotsmen to Japan. Or, on the flip side, maybe it was really the Japanese who invented the stuff.

Taketsuru Pure Malt 17 Year Old

This whisky is referred to as pure malt because its a blend of malt whiskies from Nikkas Miyagikyo and Yoichi distilleries. Pure malt basically means the same thing as blended malt, just for Scotch and Japanese whiskies Like many of Nikkas offerings, Pure Malt is a smoky, sweet adventure into the land of the rising sun.

Serving Nikka From The Barrel

From the Barrel can be served neat, on the rocks, or mizuwari. A few ice cube is a good choice to lower the temperature of this high-proof whisky. The slight dilution does not harm the character. Big, slow-melting ice cubes are another good choice. This is especially true if you want the chilling effect of ice without too much dilution.

Nikka From the Barrel also makes a great mixer in cocktails. It is certainly on the pricey side, and is best for drinks that dont hide its complexity.

Best Age Statement Blend: Hibiki 17 Year Old

Review #31: The Blend of Nikka Maltbase Whisky : worldwhisky

Region: Japan | ABV: 43% | Tasting Notes: Toffee, cherry, peach

In Japanese whisky, the art of blending is very important. A testament to this is Suntorys superb Hibiki range. There are two NAS blends available, but the 17-year-old is as good as any single malt out there. This is a blend of grain and malt whiskies that are aged for nearly two decades, with a silky smooth mouthfeel and a buttery, fruit-laden palate. You could use this for a cocktail, but it’s best to sip it neat.

Region: Japan | ABV: 45% | Tasting Notes: Almond, smoke, vanilla

While few Japanese whiskies come close to the levels of Islay scotch in terms of peat, there are some decidedly smoky expressions available. Nikkas Yoichi Single Malt is one of the best. This NAS whisky has an ample dose of smoke, but its balanced out by tropical fruit and caramel flavors on the palate. Sip this neat, or mix with soda and ice for an intensely flavored Highball.

Yamazaki 18 Year Smell

Whoa, that first sniff is a wall of dark fruitiness thats date, prune, and blueberry. Then comes the dark honey, this floral and slightly grassy note , pear, peach, and a spritz of fresh orange. Yamazaki 18 Year has very captivating darkness, yet still maintains a brighter and lighter side to it that makes it so interesting and expressive, and with absolutely no heat to get in the way.

I could sit here all day and smell it. At the same time, I also do notice a lack of heft and viscosity to some degree because of the 43% ABV. I absolutely despise that ABV.

Swirling coaxes out a brighter personality with cherry, grapefruit, pear, and honey up front followed some lightly toasted grains, vanilla, fennel, orange, mint, and just a slight oak char. The swirling seems to push the darker and heavier date and prune to the back, but it re-emerges over time as the whiskey settles .

Its dark, fruity, bright, vibrant, refreshing, and absolutely captivating all at once. Yamazaki 18 Year smells incredible, spanning so many different scents, constantly shifting, and making me want more with every subsequent smell.
