Overall Experience & Value For Money
This is most definitely a great everyday rye whiskey, not overly expensive, not overly complex, but to the point and straight, with plenty of guts and just enough character to stand up to all the mixers and other ingredients you want to throw on top of it.
The presentation overall is very neat and minimalistic, which is true for the entire Bulleit portfolio. The bottle resembles an old flask, which most people back in the days would carry in their pockets. The label has a spring-like, fresh green look. From a multisensory experience standpoint, the color suits the overall aromatic profile quite well, delivering some of the fresh, breaded spiciness.
What stands out for me, is that the bottle offers amazing design and work ergonomics for bartenders and hobby mixologist. When you free pour, the Bulleit rye perfectly rests in your hand.

Bulleit 12 Year Old Rye Whiskey Review
Sourced from MGP, the Bulleit 12 Year Old Rye Whiskey is made using their famous 95/5 mash bill and costs around $50. Which really isnt that bad for rye carrying an age statement these days. When I first heard about it I was figuring it would be at least 50% higher than that just because of the double-digit age its carrying Im happy to be wrong.
In fact, on the whole, Im happy with this whiskey, which well cover in the rye whiskey review below, but if I had one request it would be higher proof. Im not mad at 46%, incredibly happy its not 40%, but would love to see a CS LE version of this at some point, if they have the stocks. Because, while double-digit age-stated rye is rather rare on the market today, cask strength double digit is even more so.
Bulleit Rye 12-Year-Old Straight American Whiskey is the fifth addition to the Bulleit Frontier Whiskey family, as well as the first extension of Bulleit Rye, a whiskey with one of the highest rye percentages on the market. Using the same mash bill as its predecessor 95% rye and 5% malted barley this small-batch rye whiskey was fully aged and matured to perfection in new charred oak barrels for a minimum of 12 years to create a balance of smoothness and spice worthy of Bulleit Ryes impressive list of credentials.

Bulleit Whiskey Distillery Barrel Warehouses And Visitor Center
The $150 million investment includes the distillery, barrel warehouses and now the visitor center.
When it comes to distilling this facility is all business. It now runs around the clock 24/7. Grains come in by tractor trailer where they are weighed and tested for quality control. In an effort to support the local community all 1.8 million proof gallons produced annually are distilled from 100% Shelby County corn. The rye, wheat and malted barley are trucked in from other areas. Rye in particular simply does not grow well in this region.
The barrel warehouses are also state of the art built for consistent whiskey flavor and safety. Though we didnt get to walk through one we did get a lesson on how they work. Instead of stick built ricks these barrels are placed on pallets. As you can see from the photos they are what many would call a single story barrel warehouse with six barrels to a pallet stacked six barrels high On a side note the bung isnt on the side in a stave its placed on top in the center of the barrel head. This may not be as historically sexy as a rickhouse but it is super efficient and when it comes time for bottling the pallets can be easily and safely moved by forklift six barrels at a time. The warehouses are not mechanically heated or cooled as they are designed to take advantage of the local climate.

Review #201 Bulleit Bourbon Single Barrel Frontier Whiskey
Mashbill: H21% rye mixed with Bulleits #2 yeast strain
BACKGROUND: Bullets story dates back to the late 80s when Tom Bulleit took his family’s recipe and made his own version. This single barrel expression was modeled after the classic high rye mashbill, aged for 8-12 years, and bottled at 104 proof after being non-chill filtered.
NOSE: The nose opens up with a sweet butterscotch scent that mixes with baking spice and charred oak. As you continue to waft in the flavors light notes of orange, citrus, vanilla, and maple brown sugar start to come and go.
PALATE: A very oily mouthfeel flows around your mouth with ease leaving notes of honey, banana, and vanilla. As you continue to drink notes of baked rye bread, cracked pepper, caramel start to take over accompanied by floral noted that all turn to a peppery rye spice.
FINISH: A long spiced finish that is all so common in rye whiskeys, medium-long in length with a slight undertone of butterscotch.
VALUE: I paid $70 for this bottle, and although I enjoyed the pour, I think this should be priced in the $50 or less range like the barrel strength expression.
FINAL THOUGHTS: A delightful bourbon for any rye whiskey lover, one thing that really stands out about this bourbon is the rollercoaster of flavors that are experienced as you go from nose to finish.

A Brief History Of Rye Whiskey
Rye whiskey is actually the first kind of whiskey to be documented in the United States. Rye whiskey was distilled in New Amsterdam around 1640 by the colonys director, William Kleft, and was the grain of preference in the Netherlands and Germany.
In 1750, local farmers in Pennsylvania began distilling rye whiskey by mixing it with grain. However, it soon faced many challenges. In 1783, bourbon whiskey quickly overtook Rye as the preferred whiskey of the middle class in the United States.
Pennsylvania rye whiskey was mainly a straight rye whiskey, while Maryland rye was more refined with flavors like cherry or prune juice added to make it sweeter. Both kinds were popular in the 19th century, but the Pure Food and Drug Act of 1906 nearly destroyed the Maryland Rye category. It was a time when straight whiskey was becoming more popular, and thereby rye whiskey was required to be classified as a blended whiskey.
In addition to those, Prohibition also challenged rye whiskeys production, even until it ended.
Distilleries returned to Pennsylvania and Maryland, although not as many as in Kentucky. Bourbon grew to be more popular, and a lot of distilleries were shut due to Prohibition, significantly affecting rye whiskeys sales. Following this, Pennsylvania reverted to being a control state, with politicians hostile to distillation. Pennsylvanias higher taxes and restrictions rendered distilling unprofitable.
The Main Differences Between Rye Vs Bourbon
The main differences between Rye vs Bourbon are:
- The rye mash used in rye whiskey has a spicy tone and dry taste, whereas the corn mash which is used in bourbon has a sweeter taste and full-bodied flavor.
- Rye whiskey is more intense, whereas bourbon is sweet and easier to be tolerated
- Rye is distilled in no more than 160 proof , whereas bourbon is distilled in no more than 125 proof .

How To Drink Bulleit Bourbon
Theres no doubt about it: sipping bourbon neat is the best way to enjoy this spirit. Of course, no one will tell you off or turn their nose up if you serve Bulleit mixed into a cocktail but to really understand the spirit youll want to try it by itself first.
Start with a Glencairn glass and pour a measure in before breathing in the aroma of the spirit. While you could just use a shot glass, the shape of a Glencairn glass means youll experience more of the aromas as they funnel upwards. If you dont have a Glencairn glass, try an Old Fashioned or a rocks glass with a tapered shape.
If you find Bulleit too strong to enjoy by itself, try adding a few drops of water. This will release more of the flavours of the bourbon and will take the heat off. And if the taste is still too strong, serving whiskey on the rocks is another great option.
Chilling the spirit will let the sweetness shine through without altering the drinking experience. Bourbon is supposed to be savoured rather than chugged back, so sipping only a tiny bit at once is your best bet for ultimate enjoyment.
