They Have A Unique Take On Single Barrel
Cruzans Single Barrel Estate Diamond aged light rum is a sort of single barrel spirit. The reason were saying sort of is because the rum that ends up in a Cruzan Single Barrel bottle is a blend of aged rums thats then put into a freshly charred new oak barrel for more aging . The rum from that barrel is what goes into the bottle.

Three Essential Characteristics That Define The Rum According To Your Perspective
Rum characteristics vary greatly from very heavy bodied to cleaner rums depending on each distillerys standards. All Cruzan Rum is distilled on the island of St. Croix guaranteeing that our strict standards are met every time. First, our five-column distillation process produces a very clean distillate .
Second, our Light and Dark rums are all aged in charred oak barrels. Third, these aged rums are blended to match our standards for each individual product. This produces a very smooth final product that varies in complexity depending on the average age of the rums blended. We love taste tests and are happy to let consumers decide for themselves!
When tasting our Dark rums, you can expect a rich golden color with a deep oaky aroma before it touches your lips. The first sip will have a buttery mouthfeel and sweet honey finish. As it coats the back of your throat, you can embrace the welcoming taste of warm oak and vanilla. Words dont do it justice! Try it yourself and you will understand why Cruzan rum is a big part of the Crucian way of life.

The Island Spirit Fund
When Hurricane Maria hit our home of St. Croix in September 2017, it caused severe damage to homes, communication networks, and the power grid. Despite the challenges Crucians faced in recovering from one of the worst Atlantic hurricanes on record, their resiliency never wavered. Neighbors came together to help each other and renew their island, inspiring Cruzan® Rum to amplify and sustain this Island Spirit. In partnership with GlobalGiving, Cruzan® has established the Island Spirit Fund to assist communities across the U.S. and its territories in weathering storms of all kinds. Grants made from the Fund will support local non-profit organizations providing the nourishment, supplies, equipment, and other resources required for short-term recovery and long-term stability. Beginning in 2018, Cruzan® will donate a portion of proceeds for every case of rum sold to the Island Spirit Fund* to ensure that no one weathers a storm alone. Simply put, the more rum we sell, the more good we can do. Learn More or Donate Now
Its sweet, yes. The alcohol taste nearly disappears when mixed with OJ. But its good and it gets you drunk and its smooth and sweet enough to drink from the bottle, or over ice with no mixer. However I am someone who actually enjoys the burn of hard liquor

Cruzan Rum Entwined With Islands History Culture
Most think of the great American spirit as bourbon whiskey. But in the U.S. Virgin Islands, its rum.
Two major rum producers, Cruzan and Captain Morgan, call the island of St. Croix home. But Cruzan is entwined with the culture of the island, with a history stretching back 250 years. The name, Cruzan, means of St. Croix. Captain Morgan relocated several years ago from Puerto Rico, lured by billions of government incentive dollars. The close-knit St. Croix community, with deep relationships strengthened by enduring adversity, view the Captain as a carpetbagger.
The Cruzan facility sits on the same sugar plantation where it began. While the founding family remains involved, the distillery is owned by Beam Suntory, the Japanese-owned, Chicago-based booze conglomerate of which Jim Beam is just one component.
The historic Cruzan plantation house provides offices, and a historic cane mill sits at the entrance surrounded by the flags of the nations that have flown over the island.
On a recent distillery tour, visitors got to taste raw molasses, the feedstock of rum, running off tanker trucks. In an open-air fermentation house, massive open tanks of molasses bubble, creating a molasses/alcohol liquid that heads to distillation, after which it is blended to proof and aged in used Jim Beam barrels. The finished product heads to Kentucky to be bottled or flavored, which makes sense given the cost of shipping to and from St. Croix.

The Distillery Is As Old As Roller Skating
Cruzan Rums history dates back to 1760. In fact, its still produced amid the historic ruins of an old sugarcane plantation called Estate Diamond. Being first established in 1760 makes Cruzan Rum exactly as old as the invention of in-line skating by a guy named John-Joseph Merlin who was obsessed with clocks and helped create this incredible robotronic swan . He was from Belgium.
How Old Are The Cruzan Rums
- Cruzan Estate Light has been in existence for two years.
- Cruzan Estate Dark is a two-year-aged rum that is offered in both 80- and 151-proof versions.
- Cruzan Estate Diamond has been in the family for five years.
- The product is once again in production and is again available in both a dark and a light version.
- a combination of rums aged 5-12 years, then rebarreled in new oak barrels for an additional maturing period.
- Cruzan Single Barrel: a blend of rums aged 5-12 years, then rebarreled in new oak barrels for an additional aging period.

A Smooth And Rare Character
Cruzan® Rum touts a smoothness that stands out from other rums. Achieved by removing fusel oils and most impurities from the liquid, the magic is all in the distillation using our five-column process and aging our one-of-a-kind rum in American oak barrels. It sounds complicated, but weve had generations to perfect this smooth rum found nowhere else.

Sugary Loaded Liquor With An Artificial Fruit Flavor Masked As A Rum3out Of 10
Cruzan Strawberry has nothing to do with aged rums. It is just a sugar overload liquor masked as a Caribbean rum to tourists. The strawberry flavor is artificial and overpowering sugar is just simply very offputting. My suggestion is to skip the entire Cruzan lineup altogether.

Who Is Gary Nelthropp
Gary Nelthropp is Cruzan Rums Master Distiller, former President of Cruzan Rum, and member of one of the founding families of the Cruzan Rum Diamond Estate distillery. Gary also acts as a key ambassador for the brand, offering his expertise and love of rum around the world. Gary personifies the fine art behind crafting high-quality rum, and carries on his familys legacy in the rum-making industry.
Who Would Like To Meet In The Rum Industry What Would You Say To Him/her
The simple truth is my father would be that person. I am the third Nelthropp to run the Cruzan Rum Distillery, and I was lucky enough to have followed in my fathers footsteps. I could not have had a better teacher. He just turned 90 and is still a very valuable resource. I only hope I will be as sharp as he is after 90 years. We have safe and socially distanced dinner together every week and I hope this will continue for many years into the future.

Cruzan Rum A St Croix Tradition
Since the early 17th century, St. Croix has been making use of its natural resources locally as well as exporting them worldwide. A fine example of this is the refining of sugar cane to produce rum. At one time, over 150 plantations were producing molasses and rum at their factories. Today, the tradition of making rum on St. Croix is carried on by the Nelthropp family. Their brand, Cruzan Rum, has been voted one of the best in the world. With visiting friends, I had the opportunity to play tourist and tour the rum distillery to discover what goes into making a world-class rum.
Entering the distillery, we observed remnants of the original plantation, Estate Diamond. An old sugar mill now serves as a cistern for the distillery. An imposing, large green building, once the estates great house, now serves as the distillerys main office. A 19th century chimney is now enclosed and houses the boilers. Like the times, things must change. Additional office space had to be added to the grounds to accommodate their employees, but other than that, the past of this plantation has been well preserved by the use of the existing buildings.

Cruzan Rum Extraordinary Rum From The Virgin Islandsseptember 23 2013
St. Croix, the largest of the US Virgin Islands, is home to beautiful beaches, charming old-world architecture, friendly people, and of course Cruzan Rum! The Caribbean has always held the distinction of being the worlds epicenter for rum, thanks in part to pirate legends and everyones idea of vacation being synonymous with tropical fruity cocktails! This isnt just a stereotype, however the Virgin Islands local rum is highly regarded throughout the world, having won over 30 Spirit awards since its founding. Cruzan is renowned for its smoothness, quality, and the pureness of the rum.
Cruzan Rum has been produced at the Estate Diamond distillery on St. Croix since 1760, and is named after the islands inhabitants, known as Crucians . The distillery still processes the rum according to their centuries-old recipe! The island was originally developed for agriculture and the production of sugar cane at many of the plantations. This naturally led to the production of rum, which still keeps St. Croix in the center of the industry!
Visitors may tour the factory on St. Croix and discover how the popular rum is made. This is a popular outing for tourists and locals alike! Some hotels, such as Bolongo Bay Beach Resort on St. Thomas, offer excursion packages for their guests to travel to St. Croix for the day and visit the Cruzan distillery. If you are interested in history or if you like rum, you need to check it out! Cheers!
Old Cruzan Rum Is Relatively Young
When you think of the Caribbean climate, you might think of falling asleep in that ironic mesh tank top. The second thing youll remember is the heat and humidity, higher here than, say, Scotland, which is why aged rum suffers a much higher loss of product to evaporation . It clocks in at about 6 to 12 percent in the Caribbean compared to Scotchs measly but still-tragic 2 percent. Cruzan aged rum tops out at 12 years of aging, largely because aging rum much longer becomes a dangerous dance with evaporation and profit margins.

Any Tips To Train The Palate And Taste Good Premium Rum
All of our lab quality control tastings are blind tastings, as it is critical to achieve unbiased results. If you are comparing to other products make sure the taster cant tell what is in each glass. In tasting a premium product like Cruzan Single Barrel Rum, I encourage you to first give your glass a swirl and notice the golden dark hue that comes from the aging and blending of this complex rum. Next, bring the glass to your nose to embrace the rich, deep heavy oaky wood notes with hints of chocolate roasted nut and cinnamon like aroma. Finally sip our Cruzan Single Barrel Rum neat or on the rocks to fully experience the warm coffee and nutty vanilla finish of one of our most complex rums yet. Repeat as many times as required.
Enjoy History And Drinking On The Cruzan Rum Distillery Tour
The Caribbeans Virgin Islands are synonymous with rum. After all, rum is what the pirates drank and was even used as island currency. When people think of drinking in the Virgin Islands, they often think of cocktails made with rum Daiquiris, Mojitos, Painkillers, Pina Coladas. Therefore, no visit to the Virgin Island of St. Croix is complete without a stop at the Cruzan Rum Distillery in Estate Diamond.
The scent of molasses is already in the air as we pull into the front gate of Cruzan headquarters, a collection of brightly colored buildings just off the highway. The gate guard points us toward the visitors center, a sherbet orange building with an open air patio. As you enter the doorway, a painted sign says Welcome to the Dont Hurry. Guests register for the $8 per person tour inside and then wait for the next tour to begin. Before the tours guests can peruse the gift and bottle shop, they can relax on the soft patio furniture or play of game of cornhole on the lawn.
This mixture is then transferred to nine fermentation tanks inside the blue building, which hold 30,000 gallons The tanks are where the yeast grows to create alcohol. Fermentation or yeast growth is what causes the liquid to bubble in the tanks, what Yashira calls movement. The longer the liquid is in the tanks, the slower the yeast grow and the slower the movement of the liquid. From the speed of the liquid we see, this batch is pretty fresh.

Cruzan Rum Distillery Resumes Production Following Hurricane Maria
St. Croix, USVI, October 16, 2017 The Cruzan Rum distillery has resumed rum production following a temporary shutdown due to the impact of Hurricane Maria. Located on St. Croix in the U.S. Virgin Islands, the Cruzan distillery produces some of the worlds finest aged rums and is also a popular destination for visitors to the island. While the distillery suspended operations for approximately three weeks due to storm damage, Cruzan completed critical repairs and does not expect any supply disruptions in the marketplace. Even though some of the companys warehouses sustained damage, Cruzans aging rum supply was not impacted. Previous investments to establish the distillerys own power generation facility to strengthen business resilience also enabled the timely resumption of rum production.
