Get Crafty Because Rye Is Great Young

Does Whiskey Make you Fat or Does It Help to Lose Weight ...

The good news for Americas young craft distilleries is that rye whiskey can generally reach a pretty high quality in a short amount of time. Rye is a versatile ingredient and shows well young, says Taylor. A lot of flavors come out of younger rye, and rye as a grain has these characteristics that shine through a little bit different from the corn in bourbon.

Thats part of the reason why so many craft distilleries are turning to rye whiskey. Not only is it popular and with less ingrained brand loyalty than bourbon, but theyre able to make serious headway in a short amount of time.

Taylor is a big advocate for aforementioned brands including Smooth Ambler and Rittenhouse. As far as young craft rye recommendations go, he has another pick. Willett three-year-old is delightful, says Taylor. Theres such a Bardstown feel to it, and its a cask strength. Its really, really delightful.

How Should You Drink Whisky

There is no set way to drink whisky, it should be enjoyed however you like it best. Purists will say that it should always be drunk neat, without ice or mixers. There’s no need for a smoking jacket and an extensive collection of bottles, just your favourite bottle and a glass. Drinking whisky isn’t a competition to see who can name the most obscure flavours they detect, it’s for you to enjoy.

Some whiskies are better suited to cocktail mixing and some drams are bold enough to be enjoyed on their own, read the description for hints and tips on how best to enjoy your drink.

Ease The Transition From Bourbon

Many people have preordained ideals about bourbon or scotch based on what their fathers drank or what they saw on television, but with rye, most are forced to start from scratch, without any built-in loyalty.

The way I got into drinking bourbon was that I just thought it was what I was supposed to do, says Taylor. Im 21, Im going to a bar, Im going to have a Makers Mark on the rocks! Ive seen it happen on TV, and thats how people move into things. Sometimes when I see people in that mindset of drinking, rye is sort of scary, because theyre stuck to a name brand or style of spirit, whether its a single malt and their dad drank scotch or this thing or that thing.

For bourbon drinkers unsure of how to delve into this whole rye thing, consider the two points above: Know your rye styles, and look to cocktails. Rittenhouse rye is our staple, and its a great almost transitional rye if youre a bourbon drinker, says Taylor.

Rittenhouse uses a mash bill with just 51 percent rye, bringing it much closer to the bourbon realm than one of its high-rye brethren. If youre thinking, Hey I want to drink these cocktails as I thought theyre supposed to be drank, then for a Manhattan or an Old Fashioned, this is not as aggressive of a rye, but it still has enough proof to pull through.

    How to Drink Whiskey

The first thing you need to consider when figuring out how to drink whiskey is the type of glass you are using.

Many people drink whiskey out of tumblers, which is a short glass with a heavier bottom. These are also known as rocks glasses.

Another typical whiskey glass is a highball. This is a tall and skinny glass that is usually used for mixed drinks.

Regardless, just know that the kind of glass you use can make a difference in how you experience and taste the whiskey.

Some glasses are designed to concentrate the vapors of the whiskey, which will allow you to smell it as much as you taste it. Experiencing the potent smell will significantly enhance the flavor.

Generally, tumblers will be the best glass for enjoying straight whiskey, whiskey on the rocks, or cocktails with ice. And there are subcategories of tumblers called the Glencairn and NEAT glasses.

However, if you are drinking a whiskey cocktail without ice or whiskey neat, you can also use a coupe glass. This glass has a long, skinny stem with a wide bowl. Think of a champagne or martini glass.

Coupe glasses are great for drinks without ice since your hands warmth will only travel to the glasss stem, not the bowl. Whiskey sours are great in coupe glasses.

    How Do You Drink Whiskey

I have to say from the outset I am no expert in drinking whiskey and I do not profess to be one. Not even close. But I know what I like and I know how I like to drink it so I may as well share it with you all. Im hoping to take you through how I generally taste and appreciate a good glass of whiskey, or as I call it, a dram. There is no right way to drink whiskey and no wrong way. There is just experimenting and enjoyment! Whiskey tasting is an art, not a science. It takes a lot of practice to truly be able to distinguish one whiskey from the other. But thats OK, because we enjoy practicing!

Once swallowed we have whats known as the finish. The first thing you will note is the warm or burning sensation from the alcohol content. Is it pleasant or nasty? How long does it last? Does it go on forever allowing you to enjoy the warmth and flavours longer?? Once the burn has dissipated have other flavours now shone through? The more complex the finish generally indicates how good the whiskey is. By complex I mean does it release layers of flavour that you didnt get with the spirit in your mouth.

Though drinking a daily glass of whiskey may help ease a person’s stress, unfortunately, it can stress out their skin. After all, there are many ways drinking alcohol affects your looks. “While all alcohol can have damaging effects on your skin, dark liquors contain congeners, which are impurities,” makeup artist Molly Leahy told StyleCaster. She added, “The more congeners you consume, the worse your skin will look the next day.”

The ingredients found in whiskey deprive a person’s body of water , causing the skin to become dry and potentially age more quickly over time. “Hard liquor can also cause skin redness by dilating blood vessels, causing spider veins and broken capillaries, particularly around nose and cheeks area,” Dr. Dimitry Rabkin, the founder of Esthetica MD, said.

However, even with all of that being the case, a person can still enjoy one glass of whiskey as long as they take precautions with their skin in mind. Having spoken to Dr. Isabel Sharkur, a naturopathic doctor, PopSugar advised people to moisturize the morning after drinking to prevent skin from drying out.

If You Drink Whiskey Every Night You May Help Alleviate A Cold

When a person is feeling just a bit under the weather, whiskey won’t do ’em wrong. After all, even during the Prohibition in the 1920s when alcohol was banned throughout the U.S., doctors would prescribe whiskey to patients for medicinal purposes. “There may have been some people who were being prescribed because there was a perceived medical need, but it was really a way for some physicians and pharmacists to make a few extra bucks,” Daniel Okrent, author of Last Call: The Rise and Fall of Prohibition, told SmithsonianMag.com.

However, as modern medicine and science has improved over time, studies today have shown that there really is some medical benefit to drinking just one glass of whiskey on a sick day . Even though there is no known cure for the common cold, whiskey has properties that can help alleviate its symptoms and help make a person feel much better. “The alcohol dilates blood vessels a little bit, and that makes it easier for your mucus membranes to deal with infection,” Dr. William Schaffner of the Vanderbilt University Medical Center told ABC News.
