What Is Hot Butter Rum

The Hot Buttered Rum Recipe

Hot Buttered Rum

Winter is the best time for warm, boozy drinks. Hot Buttered Rum is one of those fairly simple delights that always fulfills our desires for cozy, sweater-weather vibes.

This recipe comes from the Portland Hunt + Alpine Club in Portland, Maine. Its a fairly straightforward version with a spicy kick of black cardamom. More robust than green cardamom, and common in Scandinavian cooking, black cardamom has a complex, slightly smoky flavor. Look for it at your grocery store or specialty spice shop, or order it online.

For the compound spiced butter

  • 1 stick unsalted butter, room temperature
  • ½ cup brown sugar

1. Make the compound butter.

Cream together the butter, sugar, and spices in the bowl of a stand mixer. If you dont have a stand mixer, you can use an electric mixer or a spatula and a bowl. If youre working by hand, prepare for a workout. You want to create a smooth mixture with evenly dispersed spices.

2. Make the cocktail.

Assemble your remaining ingredients, the compound butter, a spoon, and a mug. Pour two ounces of rum into the mug. Use the spoon to scoop up one heaping tablespoon of the compound butter and then place the spoon, butter and all, in the mug. Pour the hot water into the mug so that it runs over the butter. Stir with the spoon until the butter has completely melted and incorporated. Garnish with a cinnamon stick if you wish. Serve hot.

Apple cider isnt available all year long, boiling apple juice or just boil water will be fine in this recipe.

I chose to use spiced rum instead of using additional spices. Feel free to add cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves as desired.

I chose to add my rum directly to my pitcher. If you prefer to monitor the amount of alcohol, then add butter and rum to each glass, then top with the warm cider.

Until very recently, I found the concept of hot-buttered rum more appealing than the reality hot-buttered rum.

While I like each of the components named in the drinkheat , butter, of course, and rum the idea of mixing them together into a warm, boozy drink topped with a slick of butterfat always deterred me from actually making it.

But this recent holiday season, while needing something warm but wanting something out of my usual rotation, I gave the drink a spin and discovered that with a little TLC, the hot-buttered rum in your mug can turn out as good as the one in your imagination.

While you can purchase hot-buttered rum batter in a supermarket, as a general rule I’d suggest you try making your own.

I wound up trying several versions, as well as reviewing a number of recipes, some of which call for as few ingredients as rum, hot water, butter and sugar, while others were more replete with spices, flavorings and other ingredients such as vanilla ice cream .

I’m not much of one for dessert drinks, so this recipe hews closer to the middle of the range, with the requisite butter and sugar but with a little spice to help liven things up. By creaming the butter with the sugar and spices you can also better avoid that dreaded oil slick appearance, and when choosing a rum, go for something big and rich.
