Theres no better way to familiarize yourself with gin cocktails then by planning a vacation to visit the worlds best gin distilleries.
The worlds most famous gins can be found in the United Kingdom as well as neighbouring Ireland. The booming gin trend has produced a high demand for premium gins produced by distilleries in Canada and America.
Weve visited a handful of gin distilleries in Britain as well as a chic gin cocktail bar at the Shangri-La Hotel in Taipei. The gin craze has officially travelled from England to North America, Asia and beyond!
In Scotland we visited Edinburgh Gin for a tour and tasting before enjoying a road trip to the Isle of Islay, which is best known for its famous Islay whisky distilleries. One of the best things to do on the Isle of Islay is pay a visit to Bruichladdich Distillery, which produces its signature Scotch as well as Botanist Gin.
In Brighton we visited a tiny micro-distillery called Brighton Gin, one of the best things to do in Brighton for G& T fans. We also stayed at the luxurious Four Seasons Hotel Hampshire to sip our way through the jaw-dropping home of renowned Bombay Sapphire.

Whats The Best Tonic To Use For Gin And Tonics
I prefer the tonic water sold in the smaller, single-serving bottles. The tonic will be fresh and you wont lose any fizz. A lot of people swear by Schweppes, but we cant say we have noticed a difference enough to specify on that one. We particularly enjoy the Fever Tree and Q tonics.
For a lower calorie cocktail, you can use light tonic. Light tonic doesnt have as much flavor as regular, but it does help to lower the calories. You can also water regular tonic down with a little seltzer water or club soda.

How Is Gin Made
Wondering how gin is made?
Any gin starts life as a neutral spirit. Its essentially pure ethanol, and then flavours are added through a process called re-distillation. Gin can be made in a column or pot still.
We like to think of gin as vodka steeped in an aromatic tea bag. Expert distillers essentially heat pure alcohol so it passes through a large tea bag filled with unique spices, herbs and citrus peel. When the pure alcohol comes in contact with this bundle of flavourful ingredients it takes on a unique gin flavour.
The flavourings can be steeped for as long as 48 hours, although some producers will distill the liquid almost immediately. Once completed, water is added to reduce the distillate to bottling strength.
So what are the most common ingredients in gin?
Gin derives its predominant flavour from juniper berries, also known as juniperus communis.
Other popular botanicals or flavourings used in gin making, besides the required juniper, often include citrus elements, such as lemon and bitter orange peel, as well as a combination of other spices, which may include anise, angelica root and seed, orris root, licorice root, cinnamon, almond, cubeb, savory, lime peel, grapefruit peel, dragon eye, saffron, baobab, frankincense, coriander, grains of paradise, nutmeg and cassia bark.
The different combinations and concentrations of these aromatic botanicals in the distillation process cause the variations in taste among different gin brands.
Top 19 Gin Mixers For Fast Easy And Delicious Drinks
Gin has become a popular spirit, one that is frequently featured in cocktails. Its hard to not love the aromatic notes of gin, but the spirit can be a little confusing at first, as gin isnt normally consumed neat. Thats where these gin mixers come into play.
The mixers featured on this list can all be combined with gin to create a simple and delicious drink. All you need is the mixer and the gin. Thats it. Two ingredients.
As youll see, there are a variety of different styles to choose from. Some mixers have powerful flavors that mostly hide the subtleties of the gin that youre using. Other mixers have more nuanced flavors, giving you the chance to experience more of the gin.
These differences mean that you need to choose your gin carefully. If youre combining with a fairly strong mixer, consider regular quality gin. You should still skip the bottom of the shelf stuff, of course, but theres no need to bring out the big guns.
For that matter, using expensive gin or craft gin with a strong mixer is just a waste, as the nuances of the gin will be lost. If the gin is expensive or complex, try a mild mixer.

What Mixes Well With Gin Is There A Perfect Gin Mixer
The first rule of drinking good gin is to use a good mixer. You can easily ruin an excellent gin by adding a sub-par mixer.
Tonic: The classic mixer
The classic mixer for gin is tonic – a drink developed by the administrators of the British Empire who drank tonic water for its anti-malarial quinine but who found it a little bitter.
They added gin and – hey presto – one of the most famous and enduring cocktails in history was born.
So tonic is the go-to mixer. If youre drinking a premium gin like York Gin, make sure you choose a premium tonic. There are some fabulous premium tonics on the market. Invest some time and effort into finding your favourite.
So-da so good
Tonic is far from the only mixer for gin.
Often, people who say they dont like gin actually dont like the taste of the tonic in a G& T.
An alternative mixer for a fizzy long gin drink is soda.
It has all the bubbles but none of the quinine that some people can find too bitter. We think gin and soda has a long and successful future ahead.
Lime cordial: This creates a classic Gimlet cocktail. Add Rose’s lime cordial to gin and ice for a very dry drink!
Lemonade: A sweeter alternative to tonic. Lots of people love this in the newer fruit gins that have appeared in recent years. Its great in York Gin Roman Fruit.
And finally: Try your own – some people like ginger ale or ginger beer, other fruit juices or cordials or even Coke!
Best Vermouth: Dolin Dry
Region: France | ABV: 17% | Tasting Notes: Lemon, Balsamic, Menthol

Dolin Dry works well with gin, particularly if you are in the mood for a Martini. Add a splash or go for a 50-50 version, however you prefer it.

But before you go splashing some Fanta in there, Whitley Neill Gins global ambassador, Devin Tomlinson has shared his favourite combos. Why not give one a try this World Gin Day.

Reduced Sugar Orange Juice
Colorful mixers automatically make a drink sexy, flirtatious, and delicious . Screwdrivers, a combo of orange juice and vodka, is simple but deceiving throwing in regular “orange juice” doesn’t make a drink healthy.
Eight ounces contains 25 grams of carbohydrates, 21 grams of sugar, and 110 calories. Slim it down with the sugar-free/light version and still flirt with the vitamins and minerals.
What Is The Best Ratio Of Gin To Tonic
A gin and tonic should be crisp and refreshing, never boozy or heavy. After doing some research, ratios can vary. Some enjoy equal parts gin to tonic, others reduce the gin and double the tonic. For us, we liked it right in the middle, which kept the drink light and crisp, but still aromatic from the gin.

Orange And Other Citrus Sodas
There is a great range of orange sodas from Fanta , the French Orangina and a firm favourite of many San Pellegrino.
When combined with gin, it makes a drink that is delightfully summery. I would recommend serving it Gin Tonica style with plenty of ice and a fresh citrus garnish youll feel like youre sippin on sunshine!
Other citrus sodas include Fanta Lemon, which is notably popular as a gin mixer in Spain and the Balearic Islands it also mixes wonderfully with sloe gin. The Double Lemon from Double Dutch has a similar character, but with the added bitterness of quassia bark. Finally, there is Ting, a grapefruit-flavoured soda that comes from the Caribbean.
Lemon Juice Or Lemonade
The choice between these two comes down to whether you want a sweet drink or not. If youre looking for something simple, citrusy, and bitter, go for the lemon juice. If its a hot day and youre going to be sitting on the porch with an aunt who never knows when to shut up about, well, everything, then go with the lemonade. The lemon smell and the sugar content will cover up the gin and youll be able to get through every tangent your aunt has on every topic from aardvarks to the inevitable heat death of the universe.

The Red Snapper is basically a Bloody Mary made with gin, adding a burst of botanicals that you wouldnt find in the traditional vodka-based version of this drink. This mixer from McClures, a company well known for its pickles, is a great choice. Its made using real tomato juice, pickle brine, dill, and garlic, and is full of flavors that will complement the gin instead of overpowering it. Theres a spicy version as well if you are so inclined.

This tried and true brand is still one of the best, despite some serious competition from smaller craft start-ups over the last few years. Grab some Canada Dry to use for this or any other gin-based cocktail that calls for ginger ale, and you wont be disappointed.

Gin & Champagne/sparkling Wine
Yes I know this sounds like a wobbly-legged evening but this is actually a great mixture. The botanicals of the gin mixed with the bubbles of champagne/sparkling wine produce a fun-filled, bubbly great tasting drink. We recommend adding a dash of lemon to add balance to the mixture or a slice of lemon if lemon juice is not available. It can lead to wobbly legs so take it easy!
Gin And Cranberry Juice
Youve probably tried vodka cranberry, but have you thought of mixing this delightfully ruby-red juice with gin? Similar to grapefruit in its tartness, cranberry juice is another healthy mixer for gin. Thats providing you choose a brand of cranberry juice that doesnt have a lot of added sugar, of course.
Fill a fishbowl gin glass with ice, a shot of Sing Gin and top up with good quality cranberry juice then garnish with lime for a truly refreshing drink.

Is Gin Hard On The Liver

Gin is the best natural remedy for kidney and liver disease. Juniper berries help stop water retention in your body, allowing you to pass more water than any other alcohol. This means that more harmful toxins and bacteria are flushed out your system.
Citadelle Gin & Lemonade
First of all, its a very easy cocktail to make at home with ingredients you can find in any supermarket. You dont even need a shaker, just a glass or a pitcher and some ice. Its everything we need right now with heatwaves and lockdown all around the world. Fresh yet complex with the touch of honey. I recommend wildflower honey for this one. It pairs with the botanicals from Citadelle Gin perfectly. It reminds me when I stayed over at Château de Bonbonnet, where they distill the gin. It was a hot summer too and we were drinking Tom Collins . Nico de Soto, owner of Mace and Danico

0.5 oz. honey
4 oz. sparkling water
Method: In a jug or single serve glass, combine Citadelle, lemon and honey, stirring until honey is completely dissolved. Add ice and fill to top with sparkling water. Garnish with fresh lemon or aromatic herbs.
