Reviewed: Grey Goose Product Line

Grey Goose uses a method of distillation that allows aromatics and flavors to be added to their vodka during the distillation process, setting it apart from many other flavored vodkas that add flavoring after distillation. The majority of the fruit and spices used in the Grey Goose flavoring process originate in France. In addition to their flagship vodka, the following are the flavored offerings from Grey Goose.

  • Grey Goose La Poire

Grey Goose La Poire is probably the most famous flavored vodka from Grey Goose. Its a pear-flavored vodka. Originally conceived by Cellar Master Francois Thibault, it was inspired by pear tarts crafted by a friend of his who was a pastry chef. It is flavored with Anjou pears and bottled at 40% ABV.

  • Grey Goose LOrange

The orange-flavored vodka from the Grey Goose line, LOrange, uses the extracted essence of one kilogram of oranges for every liter of vodka it produces.

  • Grey Goose Le Citron

The Grey Goose citrus vodka is flavored with essential oils of lemons from the Menton region of France. It is crisp and bright, as you would expect from a lemon-flavored vodka. It wouldnt hurt to use it for a high-end lemon drop.

  • Grey Goose La Vanille

Grey Gooses vanilla-flavored vodka is made using the essence of vanilla beans from Madagascar. Look for strong notes of vanilla, of course, as well as toffee, caramel, and almond. This would be a great base for an espresso martini.

  • Grey Goose Le Melon
  • Grey Goose Cherry Noir

So How Is Grey Goose Different

First off, the wheat sourced from Picardy is that of winter wheat, has 10 months to grow, unlike summer wheat with 6 months. This is a soft wheat as opposed to hard wheat, and this superior-bread making wheat is reserved for Grey Goose. This is better for distilling according to Thibault.

The wheat is milled four times within 24 hours, special enzymes are used to break it down and fermentation is not batch-processed, like in other distilleries. Instead, continuous fermentation occurs over six cascading tanks. The remaining liquid is then distilled five times in column stills.

The water added during bottling is full of calcium as it comes from a well 500 feet deep below the bottling plant, where the soil is full of limestone.

Comparing Grey Goose & Absolut

Grey Goose vodka is a specially made product made in France using two ingredients, single-origin Picardie winter wheat and natural spring water. Its vodka with a high price tag but a very smooth, luxurious taste.

Absolut vodka, on the other hand, is a product from Sweden. It uses winter wheat, and the water is from a deep well from Ahus, South of Sweden. It is categorized as a standard vodka but with premium quality flavors.

The Grey Goose Effectand What An Effect

Why does Grey Goose Vodka cost $60 a bottle?

The Believer:

Grey goose vodka was purpose made for the American market in 1997, and sold as a premium product. It is distilled in Cognac, France with a specific distillation method introduced by its importer the billionaire Sidney Frank. Grey Goose uses French winter wheat from the south of Paris, distilled in a continuous still and alpine spring water that has been filtered through the limestone plateaux of the Massif Central, which is why it is so special and why it can be sold in North America and Europe at a higher price than that of Absolut its biggest competitor.

Oh, and I know they have to put the price up for the marketing of the product too of course, otherwise it wouldnt be a very lucrative business would it?

The Skeptic:

The reason Grey Goose is so expensive is because you are paying for their marketing expenses. They spend hundreds of millions in advertising all over the world. I agree that it is a well-made vodka with high quality materials, but working in the industry myself, I know that the liquid actually costs them less than $2 after everything. Then you pay for the fancy bottle, the importers fee, distributors fee, wholesalers fee and marketing expenses, grey gooses mark-up and you have a $60 bottle of vodka.

Grey goose is a good vodka, but I prefer a few other brands that you might want to try Ciroc, Kettle One, Stolichnaya.

How Is Grey Goose Different

Grey Goose is different because of its single distillation process. Other brands equate smoothness, purity, and quality to multiple distillations, but Grey Goose disagrees and says that what theyre doing is simply stripping the base of all their flavors.

They believe that if youre using only premium quality items, there is no need for multiple distillations.

This unique process ensures a smooth spirit with a slight sweetness from the soft winter wheat. Its also gentle as it goes down, thanks to its limestone filtration method.

Grey Goose Vodka Cocktail Suggestions

Grey Goose Vodka Review

As mentioned above, Grey Goose is quite a mild vodka. Therefore, its best used a gentle base to delicate cocktails. Below, we have a couple of cocktail suggestions for Grey Goose vodka:

  • Vodka Martini
  • Black Russian
  • Bloody Mary
  • Since Grey Goose is quite mild, it doesnt offer the body and character that you would need in a stronger cocktail that heavily relies on vodka. However, it can make a strong cocktail quite smooth. For instance, it can bring out the vermouth in a Vodka Martini or help create a zesty Moscow Mule.

The Main Difference Between The Two

Now that we know more about Titos Vodka and Grey Goose, lets look at the main differences between the two. An obvious difference is their ingredient, Titos Vodka is made from yellow corn grown in the U.S while Grey Goose utilizes local French wheat. The yellow corn can produce a sweeter flavor compared to wheat. Next, the distilling process. Titos Vodka is distilled six times while Grey Goose is distilled five times. Lastly, the prices. Titos Vodka is a lot cheaper than Grey Goose. Even so, the quality between the two may not be so far apart, according to some people.

Grey Goose Vodka Review By Austin Smith

    2*****

I have to set this situation up.

I had my first taste of whiskey that I can remember when I was 7. Ever since thats what I have been drawn too. One day I just happen to decide to buy a bottle of vodka, someone in the store told me Grey Goose was decent so I picked it up. Bought a shaker, mixed it up and enjoyed it. I have a hard time believing I fell into some time of marketing technique when I never really cared about vodka, and thought it tasted like rubbing alcohol before Grey Goose. If anything, the taste on the front as soon as it hits your tongue is enjoyable. Thanks to Grey Goose, I started enjoying vodka and venturing out into other tastes.

Having said that, I respectfully disagree. Some people look for different things in their drinks, I enjoy something with a little more flavor. Not sugary, or super sweet but flavor. Grey Goose does that for me in the vodka. Some people may enjoy a clean and zero favor on the tongue, such as 360 which I also recommend.

Maybe I will change my review after I finish my 1.75 of 360, who knows

    5*****

While I do agree that there is a lot of hype and thats whats made its commercially successful I still do think its a great product for my needs. Sure its expensive at $120, for a 75cl bottle in my city, but I find myself going back to it often despite being a youngster with no income. I solely drink vodka in cocktails and my most commonly consumed mix is that of ginger ale, vodka and some lime ,just cause how easy it is to make and for the appealing taste to me, and for this Grey goose is tremendous. Its extremely smooth and more or less imperceptible. Being young, I tend to gulp down my drinks very quickly and grey goose makes me feel like Im drinking chilled ginger ale with no alcohol in it. It leaves no burn and gives you a good feeling a little later which is all I want from my vodka. Admittedly its popularity today is largely from the enormous hype and there might be more unique vodkas out there that pique your interest a bit more but if all youre doing is drinking mixes at a party Grey goose is should satisfy you. Despite the heavy price tag, I find myself coming back to grey goose as often as I can for parties and I recommend it to anyone looking for a very smooth vodka, perfect for parties, and who has no issues with the price.

Alternatives To Grey Goose At Comparable Prices

    GREY GOOSE VODKA

Titos is a huge name in vodka right now, and while not marketed as a luxury brand, it is high quality. Hailing from Texas, they make gluten-free vodka using a corn distillate. Years ago, when they first became popular, the staff at my bar did a blind taste test comparing Titos, Ketel One, Grey Goose, and Stoli. Titos won in a landslide. Although the price has climbed a few dollars since then, the quality remains the same. The only downside is that they dont make flavored vodka, so for that youll have to stick to Goose or try another brand.

Ketel One is a Dutch luxury vodka named after the original still it was made in, Ketel #1. Ketel One launched in the 1990s, but the family behind it has been making spirits for hundreds of years and had been making vodka as far back as the 1920s. Ketel One offers both traditional vodka and orange and lemon-flavored vodkas and has recently launched a series of botanical-flavored bottles such as mint and cucumber, peach and orange blossom, and grapefruit and rose.

Ciroc is another brand trying to capitalize on the association of all things French with luxury and is priced to compete directly with Grey Goose. It was created by Diageo in 2003 to try and sway luxury vodka drinkers from Goose. Distilled five times from grapes as opposed to corn or wheat, Ciroc also offers numerous flavored options to compete with Grey Goose.

    Introduction To Grey Goose Vodka

If you have ever been to a fancy club, bar or restaurant or even have a swanky friend, it is likely you have heard of the quality Vodka brand Grey Goose – but have you ever wondered what makes it so elite?

The label was founded in the summer of 1996 by businessman Sidney Frank with his recipe expert François Thibault, in the French commune of Cognac. The intention was to create a luxury vodka brand for the US market.

Grey Goose, produced with water derived from the natural springs in Cognac, is filtered through limestone & made from winter wheat grown in Picardy.

The Beverage Testing Institute named Grey Goose the best-tasting vodka in the world in 1998, and in 2004, the company sold to Bacardi for $2.2 billion US dollars. That same year, the company sold over 1.5 million cases, making it the best-selling premium vodka brand in the United States.

So, we ask, what contributed to the brands grandiose success?

We will touch on the unique distilling techniques shortly, however, an interesting perspective is given in the economist, Thomas J. Stanleys, well-researched book – Stop Acting Rich .

Stanley describes Grey Goose as a preference drink to the Americans he terms as aspirationals .

He claims that the explosive growth is partly due to it being perceived as a drink of the economic elite – even more so than Rolex or Mercedes Benz.

Bacardi Paid A Pretty Penny For The Goose That Laid The Golden Egg

Franks gamble at brand-before-booze was very successful. Hugely, in fact, since the Grey Goose label was sold to spirits giant Bacardi in 2004 just 7 years into its product life cycle. The selling price? About $2 billion. All for a liquor that is technically defined by its colorless, flavorless, odorless purity.

A Vodka Review, Belvedere vs Grey Goose vs Tito’s

Vodka enthusiasts say this is why Costcos Kirkland bottle tastes so good. Is Kirkland the same as GREY goose?

All current evidence indicates that Kirkland Signature French Vodka, nor any other products sold by Costco, are in any way affiliated with the Grey Goose brand. While the brands may have some similar ingredients and distillation practices, these are not coordinated efforts.

There Is A Connection To France Within The Vodkas Production

The wheat for Grey Goose is grown in Picardy and distilled there, before being sent to Cognac for filtration. And then theres the fact that the water its made with is filtered through limestone from the Champagne region. Even the fruit used to make Grey Gooses fruit flavors Le Melon, Cherry Noir, and La Poire, for example are grown in France. If Frank wanted a French luxury brand he could charge almost double the normal price for, at least the process is faithfully French. This excludes the LOrange flavor, however, which is made using oranges from Florida.
