The Blue Agave Problem

Tequila is a member of the larger family of spirits – mezcal. Mezcal is produced from any agave plant, however, tequila has a strict ingredient requirement: it must be made from blue agave. Obviously, this limits the availability of ingredients, which in turn drives the cost.

The limited availability of blue agave combined with an increasing demand for the popular spirit has created a significant supply issue for tequila producers. This lack of supply has allowed the increase in cost of the plant, to the tune of six times what is cost just a couple of years ago. As you can imagine, this cost is passed on to the consumer down the line.

Patróns best-known bottle is Patrón Silver, a tequila Blanco, coming in at 40% ABV. Its smooth to drink, great for cocktails, crystal clear in colour, with a fruity and citrusy smell, a sweet taste, and a peppery finish.

Patrón Reposado is another approachable and drinkable tequila. Its light amber with a hint of oak, and floral and honey notes.

Patrón Anejo is an amber coloured tequila, aged for twelve months in a combination of French and Hungarian oak and American whiskey barrels. It has a slightly stronger taste with notes of oak, honey, and vanilla, as well as raisin and caramel. Patrón Extra Anejo is aged for three years in oak barrels, and has notes of dried fruits, honey, and vanilla.

Patrón XO is a line of liqueurs that include PatrónXO Cafe, a tequila-based coffee liqueur, great in Martinis or as an ingredient in desserts.

Roca Patrón is one of the brands more premium offerings. The higher price is due to the fact that the agave juice is extracted entirely by the traditional Tahona method.

In 2004, the brand launched The Gran Patrón label, designating the most exclusive bottles in Patróns range.

The brand also has the Patrón Citronge line of fruit liqueurs including Patrón Citronge Orange, Patrón Citronge Lime, and Patrón Citronge Mango.

Whats Worth The Splurge

I dont drink only cheap tequila, of course, especially when Im writing about some all-inclusive resort and its an open bar. If you want to know my favorites if money is no object, those would be Don Julio 1942 and Clase Azul in the nice porcelain bottle. The 99,000 Horas from my home state of Guanajuato is quite good too and is a terrific value. Cuervos Reserva de la Familia makes a great gift because the artistic box changes each year and it is consistently good, but I personally would have trouble parting with a hundred bucks to purchase it myself.

Despite what the marketers want you to believe, there is very little correlation between price and quality. This is very clear every time you see the winners from spirits competitions where there was a blind taste test. If you see a bottle at the duty-free shop thats $250, you can bet that $200 of that is usually going to marketing and packaging. Those bottles seldom rank the highest in judging competitions. You can often do just as well by spending far less.

How about you? Have you found any happy cheap tequila surprises on the shelf or at the bar in Mexico?

What Makes This Patron A Top Tequila

Authentic tequila comes from blue agave. However, tequila is only required to be composed of 51 percent blue agave and is often mixed with a spirit derived from cane sugar juice.

Producers often take this shortcut because blue agave takes eight years of difficult growing to mature before tequila can even be created, let alone aged. Patrón Silver Tequila is made from only the finest Weber Blue Agave for timeless authenticity. In fact, Patrón still extracts some of its fermentable sugars from the agave using the traditional method of a stone tahona wheel in addition to a factory mill.

Review: Patron Silver Tequila

For many, Patron is the gold standard of premium tequila. And indeed, Patron has done for the tequila market what Grey Goose did for vodka. Whether you like them or not, they have convinced the world that there were people out there who would pay for expensive versions of what many had previously assumed only came in two versions: Cheap and cheaper.

As a pioneer in mass market premium tequilas, Patron took the approach of using 100% agave, crafting a fancy bottle with a little ribbon around the neck and a real cork for a stopper, and charging a premium price for it all. It has worked: Patron is now one of the best-selling tequila brands in the world, and its expensive.

And yet, when you get down to it, Patron is honestly nothing special. The tequila offers a big, and somewhat nutty and woody nose , with pronounced agave notes. The woody character continues on the palate, but its overshadowed by a pretty heavy bite and burn, suggesting that Patron is a tequila for those that grew up on rotgut tequilas and have graduated, but still wouldnt know what to do if they didnt have to gasp for air after doing a shot . The texture is full-bodied, but somewhat oily.

All said, this is not a bad tequila, but there are many better blancos out there, and at better prices that its silly to recommend it unless theres absolutely nothing better on the shelf.

Tequila affects everyone differently, so the amount of shots you can drink may be more or less than your friends. Consider your age, weight, ethnicity, and other factors. And remember to drink your tequila responsibly. Its a spirit that will catch up with you quickly and leave you wondering what happened the night before.

Is Tequila Stronger Than Beer

At Sound Brewery, we like talking a lot about beer, but sometimes we want something a little stronger than your average beer. Believe it or not, a single shot of tequila1.5 fluid ounceshas eight times more alcohol than a single serving of beer.

Additionally, tequila usually has around 40% ABV or 76-80 proof. Compare that to a domestic beer, like Corona or even Blue Moon, which range between 4-6% ABV.

We can also frame it this way: a 12-ounce bottle of beer is equal to a 1.5-ounce shot of tequila, vodka, or whiskey. That is also equal to a 5-ounce serving of wine.

So, if you have never gotten drunk on tequila before, you may be able to figure out how many shots of tequila is too much by comparing it to how many glasses of wine or bottles of beer you can consume before feeling tipsy.

The Difference In Patron Tequila

The difference in the brands products lies in their creation. It all begins in the Weber Blue Agave harvesting, the plant used as the base ingredient of tequilas.

Since the agave plants ripening happens only every eight years or so, the companys experienced Jimadors were trained to spot the plant with optimal sugar content. Using a sharp tool referred to as Coa, they get right into the piña, or the agave plants core.

These piñas ripen slowly, and it also takes a slow process to prepare them for fermentation. This arduous and meticulous task makes Patron Tequila a premium spirit and one of the worlds most known tequila brands.

The piñas are manually chopped before they are baked using small brick ovens. Once evenly cooked, a roller mill and a 2-ton volcanic stone Tahona wheel crush them to the pulp. They then go through a 3-day fermentation process, after which they are placed in barrels for distillation and ageing.

The brands oldest tequila is the Extra Añejo 10 Años, left to age for 10 years, and the product that undergoes the minimum aging process of two months is Patrón Reposado.

The story does not end when the liquor fermentation begins.

The brand ensures perfection up to the bottles they use, and the cork or crystal stopper. The renowned glass artisans from Mexico mold and measure the bottles used by the brand Lalique, the French crystal master, handles the design of the crystal stopper, while the fine corks used were obtained through sustainable harvesting.

Tequila: Where Does It Come From

Patrón Añejo Lot 22

Tequila owes its name to the area it originated: a city called Tequila. The volcanic, red clay that is found in the region provide the perfect conditions for growing the premium blue agave.

Mexican law indicates that tequila is only made from blue agave grown in the state of Jalisco, Mexico and certain other locales in various states throughout Mexico. Jalisco features an area called, Los Altos, which is a highlands area. Tequila taste can be impacted depending on which region the blue agave come from – some sweeter than others.

You may notice that there are a couple of tequila products on our list from outside of Mexico. The Tequila Rose is a blended tequila product, that utilizes tequila made in Mexico . Number Juan is a tequila distilled in Mexico that undergoes some parts of the aging process in the US. Rest assured, anything called tequila has at least 51% blue agave and is distilled in Mexico.

Why Is Patron Tequila So Expensive

Patron tequila is expensive due to the combined effects of its reputation, popularity, taste, quality and packaging. The bottle in particular setts Patron apart from other brands of tequila on the market. The tequila is also made from what is considered the best type of agave for spirit distilling, Blue Weber Agave.

The Agave Harvesting Process

In addition to increasingly limited supply, harvesting and preparing agave is still a very manual process. Many spirits have seen a mechanization and automation of this part of the process, with the advent of modern farming methods. Tequila making, specifically harvesting blue agave, continues to be a human-driven task.

The process of harvesting agave is still passed down generationally, rather than via a manual or online training modules. Tending to agave is arduous, as the plants require constant monitoring and pruning . Only those who work the agave fields know when it is ready to be harvested, as there are no obvious indicators for those lacking experience.

Harvesting agave is not as simple as observing that a plant looks mature and ready to be turned into a fermented product called wort. The jimadores are experts, with vast experience, in knowing when the agave plant has just enough carbohydrates and just enough sugar to ferment properly.

As you can imagine, with so much experience and manual labor required, a product like agave can be quite expensive. Thus, the labor intensive and specialized harvesting process alone can drive the cost of tequila.
