Throughout your career you are going to run across rejection, DeJoria points out. “You will knock on doors, and many will close on you. There will be people who don’t like your product, your company or you.” It’s important you realize this from the day you launch your business. “To be successful, you must remain as confident and enthusiastic on door No. 59 as you were on door No. 1.” If you realize this is going to happen, the rejection won’t hit you so hard. It will help you be resilient, he explains.

‘tequila Of The Future’

The Truth Behind Patrón

In 1989, Dejoria and his friend Martin Crowley were drinking margaritas at Dejoria’s house. The alcohol, Dejoria recalled, was “a little rough.”

Crowley was heading to Mexico for a business trip, and Dejoria asked him to bring back better tequila.

“I said, ‘Martin, when you go down there, try and find … what the aristocrats drink and bring us back a bottle.'” Crowley did, and told Dejoria he had met a tequila chef who could whip up an even smoother tequila. Patrón Spirits International was born.

Once again, Dejoria found himself facing rejections.

“Nobody would take us on because it was too expensive,” Dejoria said. While other high-end tequilas were selling for about $14, Dejoria remembered, Patrón was priced at $38 a bottle.

“We had to convince a wine distributor to take it,” Dejoria said. Once again, “we went out ourselves and knocked on doors.”

They took their tequila to bars, and poured out shots for bartenders. “They said, ‘Wow, that’s really good.’ We said, ‘It’s the tequila of the future,'” Dejoria said.

Eventually, the business started growing. In its first year, Patrón produced 1,000 cases of tequila. Over time, that number ballooned to 2 million.

“People realized it’s okay to pay a few dollars more if you treat yourself,” Dejoria noted. And suddenly, “Patrón was everywhere.”

DeJoria is so understated about his giving that Fortune Magazine even named him among their list of Lesser known billionaire givers.

DeJoria signed on to Warren Buffet and Bill Gates Giving Pledge, a program described as an effort to invite the wealthiest individuals and families in America to commit to giving the majority of their wealth to philanthropy. In his Giving Pledge DeJoria tells the same story he told Austin Fit Magazinethat he became a philanthropist at six years old.

We didnt have very much money but wed go to downtown Los Angeles to look at the Christmas decorations in the windows, he said. One year gave my brother and me a dime and said, Now each of you hold half the dime and go over there and put it in that bucket. So we held out the dime, walked over and put it in the bucket. But we said, Mom, thats a dime. Thats two big Coca-Colas, three candy bars, why put it in that bucket with that man? She said Thats the Salvation Army and remember this, sons, as you grow up: there is always someone that is in need more than you are. We try and give whatever we possibly can.

From Selling Shampoos To Selling Spirits

One night in 1989, Dejoria was having a margarita drink with his architect friend Martin Crowley when he recalled the tequila being a little rough. Dejoria then asked Crowley, who at that time was about to head for a Mexico trip, to bring him back a bottle of smoother tequila.

Months later, on his journey to find the best-tasting tequila, Crowley taste-tested nearly every tequila product in Jalisco. One particular brand stood out, the Siete Leguas, in which according to Crowley himself, the smoothest tequila hes ever had. Crowley returned to Dejoria with a nicer bottle of tequila and an idea to launch a premium tequila brand.

Apprehending the lack of decent tequila in the states, Dejoria is all keyed up for the new challenge. In that very same year and just 9 years after the JPMS launch, Dejoria together with Crowley launched Patron Spirits Company.

    More About The Founders

Aubio : John Paul DeJoria : Paul Mitchell Hair Systems and Patron Spirits Owner/Major Investor

John Paul Jones Dejoria is an American Entrepreneur born on April 13, 1944, in Los Angeles to an immigrant parent. Growing up in a poverty-stricken family, Dejoria learned to do whatever it took to help his family make ends meet, knocking door-to-door to sell Christmas cards and newspapers at the early age of 9. After he got out of Navy service in 1964, he worked as a one-time door-to-door salesman selling encyclopedias to earn money for his study of Dental Medicine.

Unfortunately, his plans for college were scratched as he was unable to sustain money for tuition fees, exposing Dejoria to different career orientations. From selling life insurance, copying machines, medical linens to pumping gasoline stations, Dejoria did whatever it takes to financially thrive. At one point, he was even homeless and only slept in his car.

His breakthrough in the beauty world first came when one of his friends suggested he try the booming hair care industry. Finally, in 1971, Dejoria landed a job as a salesman in Redken, an American Hair Care brand which later earned him rank as a sales manager before further climbing up as the national manager of Redkens training salons and beauty schools.

Would also make an amazing gift as it comes in such a large luxury box to be preserved for eternity. It comes with a corkscrew and a glass decanter stopper.

$680 USD is the price of Gran Patron Burdeos. If you can afford it, enjoy it!

As you might expect this is a Spirit to be enjoyed neat. Any other way of drinking it should be penalized with jail time.

    Redefining Tequila To The World

Prior to the launch, tequila already gained a bad rep of being a nasty-tasting spirit in the US. At the time Patrón Tequila was introduced, a lot was skeptical of the advertised premium tequila. And to add up, the price tag of $39 a bottle was a bit of a luxury considering other brands of tequilas only sell for just a fraction of $14.

Immediately the brand set out a marketing campaign, setting out the difference between the pure agave-based Patrón and the regular tequila which people drink with lime and salt. And once again, Dejoria finds himself knocking on doors and taking tequila to every top bar in LA. Eventually, their hard work and brilliant campaign paid off as Patrón produced about 1000 cases of tequila only in its first year. People realized its okay to pay a few dollars more if you treat yourself, Dejoria noted.

Over time, sales beefed up and Patrón Tequila quickly dominated the world of cocktails, setting Patron Spirits Co. as the leading producers in the spirits industry. Today, the company operates 130 markets worldwide with annual revenue of $1 billion.
