  • 3. Blue agave is the only plant of its species that can legally be used to make tequila.
  • 5. Blue agave grows well in volcanic soil.
  • Main Types Of Tequila:

    • Blanco or plata can be bottled directly after distillation or rested in stainless steel or neutral oak barrels to allow oxidisation for up to two months. These have a bold taste and work well in cocktails.
    • Joven or Oro sometimes blends of unaged and aged tequilas but more commonly unaged tequilas produced in the same way as blancos but given a golden hue from the addition of colouring and additives for flavour.
    • Reposado must be aged in oak barrels of unspecified size or vats called pipones for a minimum of two months and up to a maximum of 12 months. Best for mixed drinks and sipping.
    • Añejo must be aged in oak casks with a maximum capacity of 600 litres for at least one year, or between one and three years. These often have a toasty, vanilla and citrus flavour.
    • Extra Añejo must be aged at least three years in oak barrels with a maximum capacity of 600 litres. These generally have more of a smoky flavour and can be compared to fine French Cognacs with similar price tags.
    • Curados a new category launched in 2006 tequilas flavoured with natural ingredients such as lemon, orange, strawberry, pineapple and pear. A minimum 25% agave spirit must be used with 75% of the fermentable sugars coming from cane or corn and the addition of sweeteners, colouring and/or flavourings up to 75ml per litre.

    Enjoy Mariachis Voladores And Charros

    The Mexican state of Jalisco is considered the cradle of charrería rodeos and mariachi music, and visitors to Tequila can witness some of these cultural events and performances at a number of venues across the region, especially in Guadalajara.

    Charrería is Mexico’s national sport, which consists of charros/charras that dress in clothing seen on mariachi bands and do a variety of different tricks and maneuvers on horseback or foot. During this Mexican-style rodeo, the charros lead their horses through fancy step work and perform rope work called Floreo de Soga featuring intricate moves with a lasso. Head to the Lienzo Charro del Tequila near the middle of town to catch one of these shows while you’re in Tequila.

    On the other hand, voladores mostly originate from the state of Puebla, where the ritual was born. However, they are also a regular fixture in Tequila and often perform their dance in the Plaza Principal. During voladores’ shows, the performers spin around a tall wooden pole from which they are attached by their ankles.
