Believe or not, alcohol may have a positive effect on gout and the symptoms. In some cases, it is known that alcohol can decrease the levels of uric acids. In other cases, it is known that alcohol beverages will actually reduce the pain a person must withstand. Of course, there is no need to tell you that this matter cannot be generalized, therefore you will have to perform the test I have mentioned earlier in order to understand your situation.
It is still unclear how alcohol reacts with gout in a case when the pain is decreased. Some say that it doesnt actually react with the joints and the pain, but with the brain. It will decrease the pain levels simply by making the brain less sensitive. This is not recommended way to reduce the pain.
One matter I must explain is that all gout patients will drink some medications all in order to decrease the pain. The main thing here is to read the label and to understand can those medications be mixed with alcohol or not. Most painkillers shouldnt be mixed simply because alcohol will cancel their action. People with gout are often told to avoid foods that contain high levels of purines, a substance that breaks down into uric acid. Beer contains much higher amounts of purines than other alcoholic beverages, and the researchers suggest that this may explain their findings.
Arthritis expert Roland Moskowitz, MD, says it is probably a good idea for people with gout to cut beer and high-purine foods out of their diets while they are getting the condition under control. Several studies have found an increased gout risk from sugar-sweetened drinks. This link has been found in both men and women. One large study found that just one sugar-sweetened drink per day doubled a woman’s risk of developing gout compared with women who had less than one sugar-sweetened drink per month. “Studies show that sugar-sweetened drinks and fruit juices are associated with an increased incidence of gout attacks. Even though one drink didnt raise the subjects risk for a gout attack by that much, having one to two drinks in a 24-hour period was associated with a 36 percent higher risk of recurrent gout attack, compared with those who had consumed no alcohol in that time period.

April 15, 2004 — For centuries, gout has been known as the “disease of kings” because overindulging in rich food and drink is a major cause of the painful joint condition. But it now appears that when it comes to alcohol, the biggest culprit is the beverage long favored by the common man.
In the largest study of its kind, researchers found that as few as two to four beers a week increased the risk of gout by 25%. But men who drank at least two beers a day were more than 200% as likely to develop gout as non-beer drinkers. And the more beer they drank, the more likely they were to suffer an attack of gout.
Liquor drinkers also suffered a gouty fate, though not as severely. As little as one liquor drink a month increased the risk, but the chance of gout jumped 60% with two or more liquor drinks a day.
No increase in risk was seen among wine drinkers.
While there had been some suggestion that beer drinkers may be more at risk than imbibers of alcohol in other forms, lead researcher Hyon K. Choi, MD, of Massachusetts General Hospital, says the strength of the difference was a surprise.
“It certainly suggests that individuals with gout should try to limit or even cut out their beer consumption, whereas wine may be allowed, given other health benefits associated with moderate alcohol consumption,” he says.

NEW YORK – Bad news for gout sufferers who enjoy drinking the fruit of the vine – new research finds that all types of alcohol, even previously exempt wine, can bring on attacks of the painful condition.
I dont want to sound too dogmatic and say, You must stop drinking, lead author Dr. Tuhina Neogi told Reuters Health. But, the Boston University rheumatologist said, based on this study, I would counsel patients that any type of alcohol may trigger an attack.
Its not just beer or hard liquor that can trigger attacks, but also wine, she said.
Gout is a potentially debilitating form of arthritis that afflicts more than 8 million American adults, and the number is rising, Neogis team writes in The American Journal of Medicine.
The so-called disease of kings causes joints to swell and redden. It most often strikes overweight mens big toes but also claims feet, ankles, knees, hands and wrists. A link between intoxicating beverages and gout has been suspected since ancient times.
A 2004 landmark study of more than 47,000 men found that drinking beer and hard liquor – but not wine – increased the risk of developing gout.
Neither has wine been shown in other studies to bring on attacks in people who already have gout, the way beer and liquor have.
Nonetheless, Neogi said, some of her patients report they cant even sniff wine without having a gout attack.
