What About Flavored Vodkas
Flavored vodkas are trendy and obviously have developed a huge following. If you need vodka thats not made from gluten grains, you do have some excellent alternatives: try Iceberg Vodkas Chocolate Mint or Devotions Blood Orange, for starters.
Unfortunately, sticking with gluten-free vodka will mean you cant experiment with some of the top flavored vodkas on the market today, such as Effens cucumber vodka . But any of Smirnoffs wide variety of flavors should be safe, since Smirnoff is made from corn.
What Is Vodka Made From
Vodka is made from grains, primarily rye, which is a gluten-based grain. The grains used to make vodka are combined with water and then heated. Yeast is added to the pulpy mixture to promote the fermentation process, which converts the sugars in the grain into alcohol. Once fermentation is complete, the distillation process can begin.
If you react to vodka distilled from gluten grains , other types of vodka are made from potatoes, corn, and other gluten-free substances. Potato vodka, especially, is readily available in liquor stores, bars, and restaurants.
How To Choose A Gluten
If youre wanting a safe bet and need to avoid gluten vodkas like Grey Goose entirely, then follow these simple steps:
Make sure that the fermentation ingredient contains no gluten .
Ensure the spirit is distilled a number of times.
Avoid any flavorings or colorings which contain gluten and are added after distillation.
Ask the vodka maker or check their advertising claims. If they say its gluten-free, you should be safe.
To be extra careful, find out if the vodka has been certified safe by the Gluten Intolerance Group.

The U.S. FDA and TTB have ruled that distilled spirits with no additives are 100% safe, because the gluten protein is left behind in the distillation process.
The European Food Safety Authority considers distilled alcohol unlikely to cause a severe reaction in those with grain allergies and the Canadian Celiac Association allows distilled alcoholic beverages for people with Celiac even if theyre made with wheat, rye, or barley, since the distillation process should remove the reaction-causing proteins.
Beyond Celiac says: pure, distilled liquor, even if made from wheat, barley, or rye, is considered gluten-free. Most liquors are safe for people with celiac disease because of the distillation process. However, the Celiac Sprue Foundation previously recommended no hard liquor from grains containing gluten, at least during the early phases of a gluten-free diet.

Does Alcohol Have Gluten
Most alcoholic drinks, including wine, gluten-free beer and most spirits do not contain gluten.
Alcoholic beverages are regulated by either the Food and Drug Administration or the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau. Unfortunately, neither organization makes their policies clear or easy to understand. The FDAs guidelines for including the term gluten-free is available in several articles online and the TTBs information is more ambiguous:
Consistent with the new FDA regulations, TTB will continue to consider gluten-free label claims for alcohol beverages that are made from gluten-containing grains to be misleading to consumers who are seeking to avoid the consumption of gluten for health reasons. However, products made from gluten-containing grains may be labeled with a statement that the product was ‘Processed,’ ‘Treated,’ or ‘Crafted’ to remove gluten, if that claim is made together with a qualifying statement that warns the consumer that the gluten content of the product cannot be determined and that the product may contain gluten.

- If not distillation, there is also another method of increasing the alcohol percent.
- They put vodka through a high heating process wherein the container in which this is called the Still.
- The boiling temperature of alcohol is lower than water.
- That is why, when vodka boils, the alcohol in it evaporates and separates from the water. The manufacturers then collect this strong undiluted, evaporated alcohol.
- The usual range of alcohol by volume in most brands of vodka is around 30 to 40 percent.
