It Wont Spike Your Blood Sugar
Mexican researchers from Centro de Investigación y de Estudios Avanzados Biotechnology and Biochemistry Irapuato have found that the agave in tequila is non-digestible and will not raise blood sugar levels as much as other booze. This is good news for Sue Torres, consulting chef with the hot Brooklyn restaurant Leyenda. Like 86 million Americans, she suffers from pre-diabetes. It leaves her with low blood sugar and an instant headache when she drinks most forms of alcohol. But tequila made from 100 percent blue agave actually agrees with Torres. Unlike other liquors, she tells The Post, Tequila has a soft sugar that does not cause my blood sugar level to spike, my body to sweat and my energy to crash. If I choose booze, I choose tequila.
Is Blanco Tequila Healthier
Those who prefer tequila on the healthy side should opt for Silver or Blanco. No added sugars or additives are used in the production of this 100% agave tequila. Unlike other tequilas, they do not soak up the flavors of barrels during the distillation process. They are therefore not aged or rested like other tequilas.
Is Tequila The Healthiest Spirit Of Them All We Think So
When you compare tequila to many other popular spirits, it is easy to argue that it is the healthiest.
Tequila is made from natural sugar, agave nectar, whereas other spirits can be distilled with refined sugars that may be high in calories or processed corn syrup. Quality tequila, like Casa Mexico Tequila, has no added preservatives or artificial colors.
Tequila also contains fewer calories than many other spirits. It is a great drink of choice for people who are on a diet. With only 98 calories in a 1.5 oz shot, its easy to see why! But what about vodka and whiskey? The average shot of vodka has 106 calories whereas whiskey has 113.
Another great benefit is that tequila is less likely to give you hangovers than other spirits. Hangovers are caused largely by congeners. These congeners, through the fermentation process and aging, are more prevalent in barrel-aged spirits such as wine, brandy, or whisky. Tequila, on the other hand, is made from 100 percent blue agave and has fewer congeners than brown hard liquors.

Increased Stress And Loneliness
Experiencing Isolation and stressincluding mass stress may put you at higher risk for alcohol use disorder. And while isolation and stress may increase the compulsion to overdrink, drinking too much during these times may in turn lead to increased stress and potentially increased loneliness.
“Although alcohol temporarily dampens the brain and bodys response to stress, feelings of stress and anxiety not only return, but worsen, once the alcohol wears off. Over time, excessive alcohol consumption can cause adaptations in the brain that intensify the stress response. As a result, drinking alcohol to cope can make problems worse and one may end up drinking to fix the problem that alcohol caused.”
George Koob, PhD, NIAAA Director
During times of social isolation, such as the COVID-19 pandemic, boredom, stress, and economic distress can increase the risk of relapse in people with alcohol use disorder.
Researchers also know that long-term heavy drinking can cause increased anxiety and a decreased ability to deal with stress due to the release of higher amounts of certain stress hormones.
Is Tequila Healthier Than Vodka
Today I examine the evidence that tequila is a healthier drink of choice when compared to vodka.
Over the course of my life I’ve been a drinker. I started off with beer, drinking the Midwest’s finest lager’s and pilsners, mainly sticking to Michelob Golden Light, which is a regional product of Anheuser Busch, and Leinenkugel’s Honey Weiss. As I grew older, I gravitated towards rum, going into the Flor de Cana brand and eventually into a Venezuelan rum called Diplomatico. When I looked at all the sugar consumption going on there, I started drinking vodka with soda. Grey Goose, Tito’s, Ketel One, I drank just about any of them interchangebly.
When I had my son in 2005, I had a lot of time during the pregnancy to experiment with tequila. I started noticing that the day after sipping tequila, even in large quantities, I felt better when compared to vodka. Many years later, I’d probably say 2018, as it became more popular, I started drinking blanco tequila’s during the day as a day time sipper. Based on the fact they didn’t need any soda to make it taste great, Don Julio Blanco on the rocks became somewhat of a normal thing for me to sip on while enjoying Florida’s great scenery.

It has a low calorie count. A 1-ounce shot of vodka, she claims, contains 96 calories, but a shot of tequila has just 64 calories, according to her calculations. What Sweetener To Use
What does need replacing is the sweetener. Otherwise the lime juice would be overpoweringly sour. My secret weapon for this and any other cocktail I make that needs sweetening, to give it a bit of sweetness and reign in the sourness of the lime, is sugar-free simple syrup.
You can make your own simple syrup by combining equal parts sugar substitute, like allulose or erythritol, and water in a sauce pan and heat it until the sugar is fully dissolved. Then allow it to cool. It keeps in the refrigerator for up to a week, so you can use for other things.
You can also purchase it to make it super simple. I use sugar-free simple syrup from Wholesome Yum. Its a zero calorie, zero carb sweetener made with monk fruit and allulose. Its perfect for cocktails. Purchase it using our affiliate link above and get 10% off with coupon code: DLC10.

So What About The Other Claims The Tequila Diet Stronger Bones Is It An Upper
Well we’re sorry to say, these are just completely unproven . Here’s why:
All the theories around weight loss and bone density revolve around agavins. Agavins are the carbohydrates that are used to make tequila . According to The Cut, agavins have in been shown to lower blood-sugar and curb appetites in mice, in a study that was conducted by Dr. Mercedes Lopez. It’s also widely claimed that the agavins are not digestible and therefore won’t spike your blood sugar.
Here’s the bummer: unfortunately these properties are actually distilled out when the agave is made into tequila. So, you aren’t actually drinking a blood sugar lowering, metabolism boosting elixir.
On to the next. Tequila is an upper. Or is it? Well, we always thought so, but this theory is also no bueno. There are no differences in the way that your brain processes different types of alcohol. In brief – tequila has the same effect on your brain as any other spirit. But hey — if tequila makes you happy, don’t let a little science bring you down!
So, we’re sorry to have debunked those health claims, but there’s plenty of reason to keep sipping one of our favorite spirits.
Blanco tequila is clean, gluten free, low calorie and low carb — and it’s delicious. While it won’t magically make you lose weight, it will make a mean spicy margarita.
